Sexual Identity and Bullying

02/04/2013 / Medline / Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay

High school can be tough on kids, it's not always the "best days" of their lives. But it can be especially challenging for gay, lesbian and bisexual teens.

So researchers in England wanted to know if it gets better for this group after high school. Using data collected from more than 4,000 teens between 2004 and 2010, the team looked at how rates of bullying changed as the teens got older, and what effect bullying has on their emotions.

Compared to their heterosexual peers, LGB boys and girls were about twice as likely to be bullied throughout high school. But generally, the bullying for girls declined significantly as they left high school. 57 percent of lesbian or bisexual girls reported being bullied at age 13 or 14, compared to 6 percent at age 19 or 20.

Among boys, the bullying declined from 52 percent in the early teen years to 9 percent at 19 or 20. But the likelihood of still being bullied actually increased after high school when compared to straight boys. LGB males and females had significantly higher levels of emotional distress than their heterosexual-identified peers.

Researchers say these findings show how critical it is to address LGB victimization during adolescence

'Coming Out' Can Bring Health Benefits, Study Says

Openness about sexual orientation may reduce stress for lesbians, gays and bisexuals

By Robert Preidt / Medline / January 29, 2013

TUESDAY, Jan. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Being open about their sexual orientation offers health benefits for lesbians, gays and bisexuals, according to a new study.

"Coming out is no longer a matter of popular debate but a matter of public health," said study lead author Robert-Paul Juster, of the Centre for Studies on Human Stress at the University of Montreal's Louis H. Lafontaine Hospital.

He and his colleagues looked at 87 men and women, about age 25, who had different sexual orientations (gay, lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual) and found that lesbians, gays and bisexuals who were out to others had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and fewer symptoms of anxiety, depression and burnout.

When a person is under chronic stress, cortisol contributes to "wear and tear" on a number of the body's systems. Taken together, this strain is called allostatic load, the study said.

"Our goals were to determine if the mental and physical health of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals differs from heterosexuals and, if so, whether being out of the closet makes a difference. We used measures of psychiatric symptoms, cortisol levels throughout the day, and a battery of over 20 biological markers to assess allostatic load," Juster said in a university news release.

The researchers found that, contrary to their expectations, gay and bisexual men had lower depressive symptoms and allostatic load levels than heterosexual men. And, "lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals who were out to family and friends had lower levels of psychiatric symptoms and lower morning cortisol levels than those who were still in the closet," Juster added.

The findings, published Jan. 29 in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, highlight the positive effect that self-acceptance and being open about their sexual orientation can have on the health and well-being of lesbians, gays and bisexuals, the study authors said.

But that may only be the case in open and tolerant societies.

"Coming out might only be beneficial for health when there are tolerant social policies that facilitate the disclosure process," Juster said. On the other hand, he added, societal intolerance during the disclosure process generates increased distress and contributes to mental and physical health problems.
Take Action:
  • BOYCOTT EXXON MOBILE - Do not pump gas at ExxonMobil - Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil voted earlier this year overwhelmingly against protecting employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It's been doing that for years. Despite being the top Fortune 500 company, the corporation is notorious for failing to provide for its LGBT employees. Scoring an abysmal -25 on HRC's Corporate Equality Index -- the lowest possible score -- ExxonMobil claims that LGBT protections are "unnecessary" and already covered under other company policy.
  • Boycott "Whole Foods." CEO John Mackey calls Obamacare a fascist program. In our opinion, Obamacare offers insurance to those with pre-existing illness to include HIV. But John Mackey who makes lots of money off of progressives to include the LGBT community and rather let them go with-out health insurance. And this has been a 4 year tend as Mackey has been smacking Obama down the entire time. How can we eat healthy if we do not have health insurance as we have a pre-existing health condition? We can't, unless we have Obamacare. Our answer is to never go back to Whole Foods as CEO John Mackey fought against Obamacare the whole time. John Mackey fought against us, the LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups. UPDATE: President/Owner of Chick-Fil-A stated "they do not support Gay Marriage." "They support the bible only." Therefore, we believe they do not welcome Gay people as they may feel that Gay people are an abomination. Tell your colleges, business's to end their lease and business relationships with Chick-Fil-A (CFA). Dan Cathy (owner of of CFA) contributed to Exodus (Reparitive Therapy) and the FRC whose money is connected with "KILL THE GAYS" in Uganda. Question: Does Dan Cathy know that politics should not be discussed at the dinner table?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military in gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from Marrying one another.. Case has now been sent to the US Supreme Court. Demand that Judge Roberts reverses DOMA and that Judge Roberts Upholds the Reversal of Prop 8.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly GENDA (Gay Employee Non-Discrimination Act). GENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Walmart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Tell Macy's to stop selling Trump's Clothes!

Obama: 'Important for us to articulate' gay marriage views to Supreme Court
By Carrie Dann, Political Reporter, NBC News, March 1, 2013

A day after his administration formally weighed in on an upcoming Supreme Court case on gay marriage, President Barack Obama said he felt the issue required a response that reflected "what I believe."

"I felt it was important for us to articulate what I believe and what this administration stands for," he said during a press conference at the White House.

After first indicating that it would not get involved in the case, the Justice Department on Thursday filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case over the constitutionality of California's "Proposition 8," which banned same-sex marriage in the state after thousands of gay couples had already legally tied the knot.

Obama, who publicly changed course and embraced same sex marriage last year, said that he hopes that the court rules to strike down not just California's ban on gay marriage but equivalent restrictions in other states.

"The court may decide that if [a ban on same sex marriage] doesn't apply in this case, it probably can't apply in any case. There is no good reason for it," he said. "If I were on the court, that would probably be the view that I'd put forward."

"But I'm not a judge. I'm the president," he added. "The basic principle, though, is let's treat everybody fairly, let's treat everybody equally, and -- and I think that the brief that's been presented accurately reflects our views."
