Re: [Peckers_Pics] Male/Gay Health-Discussion-PICS Don't Buy This Type of Omega-3 Fish Oil

Ditto that, big time!

Hello Everyone,

I've been taking high dose omega-3 fish oil ever since studies started being published (about eight years ago) that showed that higher doses of omega-3 fats could reduce the incidence of arrhythmia – irregular heartbeat - and a more serious version called atrial fibrillation (Afib), which I was diagnosed with when I was 25.

Atrial fibrillation is characterized by a wildly uneven heart palpitations where one might faint or fall down or even have congestive heart failure or a stroke.

I typically had 10 to 15 "events" a year, where I had to drink a lot of water, lay flat and do yogic deep breathing until it stopped. Events would last from 30 minutes to two days, where my heart beat rapidly and irregularly so that blood circulation in my body was weak. Imagine your heart feeling like its beat is weak, but it's irregular and superfast, almost like it's fluttering, beating without the full power to push blood around your body.

Some nutrients, like magnesium seemed to help reduce the incidence of the events and my acupuncturist could stop my Afib on his table. He gave me a Chinese remedy called Burnt Licorice Tea that could stop my Afib most of the time within a half hour after I drank it.

But nothing completely stopped it until I tried high-dose omega-3 fish oil.

Reading the studies and experimenting, I found that taking 4,000 mg of the net total amount of EPA and DHA in fish oil stopped my atrial fibrillation. (Lower doses don't work as well.)

Now, in researching omega-3 fish oils I find that there have been two types of fish oil and one of them can do almost as much harm as good.

TRIGLYCERIDE (NATURAL) FORM

Fish oil that comes out of the fish is naturally a triglyceride (TG), a fatty acid with a glycerol backbone, for the chemically inclined.

But some fish oils are processed to multiply their potency by reacting them with ethanol (alcohol). This process removes the triglyceride backbone, which is substituted with ethanol. So now the fish oil is not truly defined as an oil and it contains about 15% ethanol.

So labeling it as fish "oil" is technically false.

ETHYL ESTER (CHEMICALLY MANIPULATED) FORM

These fish oils are called ethyl esters (EE).

Studies show that the triglyceride form gives at least 25% better absorption than the ethyl ester. Where the triglyceride form does all the good things you've heard about omega-3 fish oils, the ethyl ester form works well enough for my Afib and other important effects, such as lowering blood triglycerides but it apparently causes other problems that predict a shorter lifespan because of more inflammation and degeneration.

TROUBLE IN THE FISH OIL KINGDOM

The ethyl ester form is less stable and oxidizes easily. Oxidizes means goes rancid. In studies, the EE form decayed 33% faster than the TG form.

Then there's a problem that children may be more vulnerable to the toxic effects of the ethanol contained in the EE form, even in small quantities.

Next and probably most telling, in rat studies the EE form causes cytotoxicity. Cyto = cell. This means cell toxicity. Studies in animals have shown that ethanol released into the liver and pancreas can result in severe organ damage.

I have been using Nature's Bounty Triple Strength Fish Oil because it gives 980 mg of EPA and DHA per capsule. However, now I find that it is the EE form, so I quit using it.

After careful analysis of the highest quality fish oil products on the market I've settled on Carlson's "Very Finest Fish Oil Lemon Flavor" Liquid. It comes from Norway, just like leading brand Nordic Naturals, but it costs less than Nordic Naturals' products. I take a tablespoon a day (as an optimal dose to eliminate my Afib.

One of my most highly regarded naturopath friends, David Getoff, says it's his favorite fish oil too, so I'm confident that it really is the best and the best for the money.

If you want to read the details comparing the TG and EE forms of fish oil, and learn a method to find out if the fish oil you're taking is EE or TG, click on this link - http://www.ascentahealth.com/print/373

It is worth noting that I have not read a review of fish oils in the mainstream press that detailed the difference between the triglyceride form and the ethyl ester form. Indeed, CONSUMERLABS' report on fish oils missed the boat on this critical difference in their supposed critical analysis of fish oil products.

And remember, omega-3 fish oils have been shown to reduce the risk of cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, senility, premature delivery, postpartum depression and many other health conditions.

Have a great day!
