Weight Loss: Have Fun, Take it Slow

By Jennifer Gruenemay, ACE-Certified, January 16, 2013

If you had to name what the most important factors for a successful exercise program are, what would you say? Weight loss would probably be on the top of your list, but if you're following a good program, it should be a given. Two of the most important features of any successful weight-loss program are to have fun and to stop expecting instant results. Once you have those two things down, the rest (like weight loss) will fall into place.

A fun program is one you're likely to stick with long-term, which means you'll get lasting results. If you're not enjoying yourself, you're going to quit before you make any progress. If you don't like the gym, don't force yourself to work out there day after day. Instead, pick activities that you won't end up dreading and that you will actually look forward to doing, like swimming or playing competitive sports (tennis, anyone?).

And you can probably guess why it's a bad idea to expect instant results – weight loss simply takes time! Crash exercising, just like crash dieting, is a quick road to failure. So don't rush what simply can't be rushed. To lose weight and keep it off for good, be realistic about how long it's going to take. And enjoy yourself while you're at it.
Take Action:
  • BOYCOTT EXXON MOBILE - Do not pump gas at ExxonMobil - Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil voted earlier this year overwhelmingly against protecting employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It's been doing that for years. Despite being the top Fortune 500 company, the corporation is notorious for failing to provide for its LGBT employees. Scoring an abysmal -25 on HRC's Corporate Equality Index -- the lowest possible score -- ExxonMobil claims that LGBT protections are "unnecessary" and already covered under other company policy.
  • Boycott "Whole Foods." CEO John Mackey calls Obamacare a fascist program. In our opinion, Obamacare offers insurance to those with pre-existing illness to include HIV. But John Mackey  who makes lots of money off of progressives to include the LGBT community and rather let them go with-out health insurance. And this has been a 4 year tend as Mackey has been smacking Obama down the entire time. How can we eat healthy if we do not have health insurance as we have a pre-existing health condition?  We can't, unless we have Obamacare.  Our answer is to never go back to Whole Foods as CEO John Mackey fought against Obamacare the whole time. John Mackey fought against us, the LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups. UPDATE: President/Owner of Chick-Fil-A stated "they do not support Gay Marriage." "They support the bible only." Therefore, we believe they do not welcome Gay people as they may feel that Gay people are an abomination. Tell your colleges, business's to end their lease and business relationships with Chick-Fil-A (CFA). Dan Cathy (owner of of CFA) contributed to Exodus (Reparitive Therapy) and the FRC whose money is connected with "KILL THE GAYS" in Uganda. Question: Does Dan Cathy know that politics should not be discussed at the dinner table?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military in gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from Marrying one another.. Case has now been sent to the US Supreme Court. Demand that Judge Roberts reverses DOMA and that Judge Roberts Upholds the Reversal of Prop 8.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly GENDA (Gay Employee Non-Discrimination Act). GENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Walmart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Tell Macy's to stop selling Trump's Clothes!

There's Absolutely No Logical Argument Against Gay Marriage
Erin Fuchs -Jan. 25, 2013 - Business Insider (Law Order)

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided to hear two big gay marriage cases, we're getting a glimpse into the legal arguments against same-sex marriage.

They're all pretty absurd.

This week, supporters of California's anti-gay marriage law Proposition 8 filed a Supreme Court brief supporting their case, as did Republicans who are fighting to keep the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act.

Prop 8 supporters argued that marriage should be limited to opposite-sex couples because the state has an interest in regulating relationships that have the "unique capacity" to "create new life."

Of course it's silly to imply gay people can't make babies.

Lesbians can get pregnant pretty easily by going to their local sperm bank, and gay men can "create new life" by enlisting a surrogate mom.

The group of Republican lawmakers who are defending DOMA – which defines marriage as between a man and woman for federal law purposes – seemed to acknowledge in their own brief that gays can have kids.

That brief argues that straight couples should get special marriage privileges because they're the only ones who have a "unique ability to produce unplanned and unintended offspring."

It's true. Gay couples actually have to plan their pregnancies, unlike straight couples who can get knocked up without much effort at all.

Jokes aside, the fact that neither group acknowledges the existence of infertile straight couples makes their arguments rather illogical.

But this debate isn't really about making logical legal arguments. It's about homophobia.

If gay couples can't have the same rights as straight couples, then they're simply not equal.

As the New York Times columnist Frank Bruni wrote in a moving op-ed, laws like DOMA "codified unequal treatment of gays and lesbians and, in doing so, validated the views of Americans who see us as lesser people."

"If our love is suspect, then so is who we are," Bruni added. "No two ways to interpret that."

    Your Weight-Loss Solution: Eat a 3-Course Meal

    By James Beckerman, M.D. / January 04, 2013

Eating out can be a 3-course meal. You might get soup or a salad, followed by your entrée. When that's finished, there's a good chance you'll order dessert.

Three-course meals are less likely when you're at home. Even if you do eat salad, for example, you may tend to put everything on one plate or bring it all out at the same time. And if your food is presented to you all at once, you'll tend to eat it more quickly and finish more of it. Your stomach doesn't have enough time to signal to your brain that you're full until it's too late.

Try pacing yourself by serving your meal as different courses. Put salad or soup on the table first. When everyone is finished with that, bring out the entrée. You might even consider dividing your main course. Maybe start with the vegetable and then bring out the meat and starch.

Finally, don't present dessert until you've put all the other dishes away and then only eat it if you find that you're still hungry.

Supreme Court ruling on Defense of Marriage Act could allow gay binational couples to stay in U.S.
BY STEVE ROTHAUS / Miami Herald / Jan 4, 2013

An upcoming Supreme Court decision on whether an old woman must pay inheritance tax on her late wife's estate could also determine whether Coral Gables newlyweds Daniel Zavala and Yohandel Ruiz get to stay together in the United States.

Zavala and Ruiz, along with thousands of other gay and lesbian binational couples, face separation because of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing legally married same-sex spouses.

"I should not have to leave the country to be with the person I love," said Cuban-born Ruiz, an American citizen who grew up in Hialeah. "I should be able to sponsor my husband, Daniel, to stay in the country."

Zavala, now 27, visited Miami from Mexico about two years ago on a tourist visa. He met Ruiz, now 37, one night in Score nightclub on Lincoln Road in South Beach. He commuted between both countries during their courtship. The men wed in Washington, D.C., on May 1, 2012. Two days later, Zavala's tourist visa expired.

"We didn't want to break any laws so we decided to get married," Ruiz said. "I petitioned for Daniel, like any normal spouse would do. We were denied."

In November, Ruiz received a letter from the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.

"Both you and the beneficiary are male," an Immigration officer wrote to Ruiz, after he petitioned to sponsor Zavala. "The [U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act] does not specifically define the term 'spouse' with respect to gender, but Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) states for purposes of eligibility for federal benefits, 'marriage' means 'only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife' and the word 'spouse' refers 'only to a person of the opposite sex who is not a husband or a wife.'"

The letter from Missouri infuriated the men. "We don't even have the decency of getting an interview. If you're going to deny me, deny me to my face. I want them to tell me that in person," Ruiz said. He and Zavala are fighting the written ruling and still seeking an in-person interview.

"We want them interviewed and scrutinized like all other green-card marriages to determine that, except for DOMA, they meet all the requirements for approval," said the men's attorney, Lavi Soloway, who specializes in same-sex immigration cases.

Studies have shown there are about 40,000 same-sex binational couples living in the United States, Soloway said.

Soloway, who with law partner Noemi Masliah heads The DOMA Project: Binational Couples Fight For Equality, said Immigration has treated same-sex couples inconsistently.
"There are gay and lesbian spouses who have been interviewed, they receive employment authorization, they receive the benefit of lawful status of pending green card applications," Soloway said. "They're eligible for Social Security cards, can open bank accounts, get driver's licenses."

Zavala, who has a degree in international relations from a Mexican university, cannot legally work in the United States or drive a car. He fears that if he leaves the United States, he won't be able to return. He couldn't attend his grandfather's recent funeral in Mexico and his mother, being treated for cancer, had to visit Miami so she could see her son.

Ruiz, an interior designer who graduated from Design and Architecture High School in Miami and Florida International University, could move to Mexico with Zavala, where their American marriage would be recognized.

Zavala says that's an unfair choice. "He shouldn't be pushed away from his family because his country doesn't recognize our marriage," he said.

The DOMA Project recently posted a seven-minute video about Ruiz and Zavala to YouTube, Yohandel & Daniel: DOMA Threatens Young Love.

"We spoke with the lawyer and he asked if we were willing to participate and be advocates in his organization," Zavala said. "It's a better idea to do something than to sit and wait for something to happen. We thought this video would put some pressure to move things forward."

Gay marriage equality is now legal in nine states and the District of Columbia, as well as Canada, Argentina, much of Mexico, parts of Europe and South Africa. Thirty-eight states, including Florida, have anti-gay marriage laws or constitutional amendments banning recognition of same-sex weddings.

There is a movement in Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which also permits states to not recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere. South Florida lawmakers Ted Deutch, Alcee Hastings, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Frederica Wilson are among 156 co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act, according to Freedom to Marry, a New York-based gay-rights group.

Before Congress ever votes on full repeal of DOMA, a portion of the law might be tossed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last month, justices agreed to hear the case of Edith Windsor, an 83-year-old New Yorker who got hit with $363,053 in inheritance taxes after her wife, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. Windsor and Spyer, together 44 years, were married in 2007 in Canada and their home state recognized the marriage, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Windsor sued the U.S. government and last October a federal appeals court sided with her and declared DOMA unconstitutional.

When the Supreme Court agreed to hear Windsor's case, justices said they would focus exclusively on DOMA's Section 3 -- the very section used by Homeland Security to deny residency for same-sex spouses.

"The law is clearly in a state of flux," Soloway said. "It's headed for its ultimate decision, ultimate ruling in June."

Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
