Bruce: Gordon devastated

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce says goalkeeper Craig Gordon was nearing top form before breaking an arm.

Gordon faces three months on the sidelines after sustaining the "devastating" injury in a challenge with Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe a fortnight ago.

The Scotland international has not quite lived up to his reputation from north of the border since his £9m move from Hearts two years ago, but Bruce has been impressed with the 26-year-old this term. Bruce said: "I was absolutely delighted with his form. He was starting to look like the goalkeeper we paid all that money for.
"Of course he's upset, he's got a broken arm. He's had an operation to have a plate inserted and he's in plaster.
"To have him out for three months is a big blow, for sure.
"He is devastated with what happened but he will get over it."
Marton Fulop is likely to take Gordon's place in Saturday's Barclays Premier League home match against Arsenal.
Another player missing will be striker Kenwyne Jones, who is halfway through a three-match ban for his sending-off against West Ham United last month.

big loss
Suspensions have been an issue for the Black Cats recently with Lorik Cana returning from one to face Arsenal but now Michael Turner is serving a one-match ban.
Bruce has been impressed with the classy defender since his arrival from Hull City at the end of the summer transfer window.
Turner was put on standby for England's friendly against Brazil in Qatar last weekend by manager Fabio Capello.
He was ultimately not required but Bruce feels it is only a matter of time before he is called up, possibly in time for the World Cup.
He said: "There is always somebody that comes from nowhere to make it.
"I won't be surprised if it is Michael the way he has been playing. He has been terrific, so he will be a big loss this weekend."
