The 31-year old striker picked up the injury in the 2-1 defeat at West Ham United last Wednesday and will also miss England's trip to take on Brazil in a friendly match in Doha this weekend.
He has had to endure a series of injury niggles since his £3.5m switch from Wigan Athletic in January, when he was reunited with O'Neill who also managed him at Leicester City.

But the Villa Park head coach is optimistic the latest setback will not mean a lengthy spell on the sidelines.O'Neill said: "It's not a serious problem which will keep Emile out for weeks.
"I know Emile from the past, he's had an ongoing back problem throughout his time. It comes up now and again and it gets very stiff and it obstructs him. But overall it's not a monumentally difficult thing and we're trying to get to the bottom of it."
