    Today's Health/Excercise Tip:
    Lose Weight Like a Mediterranean

The French swear that by eating many of the foods American diet books forbid - such as cheese, bread, butter, wine, and chocolate - they will stay slim. But the French aren't the only ones who have it right when it comes to eating well and looking even better. The largely plant-based Mediterranean diet has also proven to be beneficial for weight loss, overall health and beauty.

With a focus on nuts, veggies, whole grains, legumes, fish, poultry, and fresh fruit for dessert, the Mediterranean diet has been shown to prevent metabolic syndrome, which causes high blood pressure and obesity. The diet also reduces the risk of chronic diseases while increasing life expectancy and quality of living.

Olive oil, which usually replaces butter in cooking and condiments, has the same amount of total fat as butter but is rich in unsaturated fats, which can promote a healthy body and radiant skin. So even if you never get a chance to visit Italy or Greece (which you definitely should!), at least try to eat like a Mediterranean.

Fla. Anti-Gay AG Loses Gov. Primary to Upstart Rival
by Kilian Melloy / Wednesday Aug 25, 2010 / The Edge

Florida's anti-gay attorney general, Bill McCollum, saw his hopes to become governor dashed as fellow Republican--and relative upstart--Rick Scott edged him out at the ballot box, reported Fox News on Aug. 25.

The article said that McCollum's numbers had looked promising, but that low voter turnout for the Aug. 24 election worked against him, leading to a victory by Scott.

"In Tallahassee tonight, the dealmakers are crying in their cocktails," said Scott in his victory speech. "Today's vote rocked the political establishment in this state--the voters have a mind of their own and they found that out tonight."

"No one could have anticipated the entrance of a multi-millionaire with a questionable past who shattered campaign spending records and spent more in four months than has ever been spent in a primary race here in Florida," McCollum said in his concession.

Scott, a health care mogul who was once CEO of Columbia/HCA, will face Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink in November. Governor Charlie Crist is leaving the governor's office to pursue a seat in the United States Senate.

Scott, 57, dipped into his own pocket to the tune of $30 million to finance his campaign, and deployed negative advertising in his campaign against McCollum, including a flyer
that recounted how McCollum, in an attempt to defend a state ban on adoption by same-sex families, recommended the hiring of anti-gay activist George Rekers
as a professional witness, with Rekers eventually collecting more than $120,000 in taxpayer money for the case.

The judge in the case, Cindy Lederman, ruled against the state in November of 2008, and pointedly dismissed Rekers' testimony, reported The Miami Herald
in a May 11 article. "Dr. Rekers' testimony was far from a neutral and unbiased recitation of the relevant scientific evidence," wrote Judge Lederman. "Dr. Rekers' beliefs are motivated by his strong ideological and theological convictions that are not consistent with the science. Based on his testimony and demeanor at trial, the court cannot consider his testimony to be credible nor worthy of forming the basis of public policy."

Judge Lederman was not the first jurist to dismiss Rekers' testimony as pseudoscience with no credible bearing on the case, noted the Miami Herald. Three years before he was recruited to testify in Florida, Rekers testified in a similar case in Arkansas--and his side lost. Judge Timothy Fox called Rekers' testimony "pointless." Despite Judge Fox's dismissal of Rekers' testimony, McCollum wrote to the then-head of the state's Department of Children and Families, Bob Butterworth, to lobby for Rekers, telling Butterworth that, "Our attorneys handling this case have searched long and hard for other expert witnesses with comparable expertise to Dr. Rekers and have been unable to identify any who would be available for this case."

As the trial dragged on, Rekers raked in the fees, with payments from the state totaling $60,900 in 2007 and another $59,793 in 2008, the Miami Herald article said.

Earlier this year, Rekers--a co-founder of the Family Research Council--hired a 20-year-old male escort to accompany him on a European vacation. Rekers defended the hire, made through gay site RentBoy saying that he needed assistance in hoisting his luggage following surgery. Rekers also claimed that his relationship with the young man was platonic and that he had been witnessing to the young man about turning away from the "sin" of being gay.

However, the escort told the Miami New Times
that his services to Rekers included administering daily erotic messages
    to the older man.

McCollum's campaign also went negative, playing up Scott's tenure at HCA/Columbia Hospitals during a Medicare fraud scandal that led to a huge $1.7 billion settlement.

Scott has portrayed himself as an outsider, as opposed to McCollum, a former longtime congressman whom Scott's campaign depicted as a political insider. But Scott shares many of McCollum's views, including opposition to marriage equality. Scott also voiced his support for a controversial anti-immigrant law recently enacted by the state of Arizona.

Another Florida race ended with the defeat of openly gay congressional candidate Scott Galvin, who had sought the District 17 seat in the U.S. House. Galvin drew less than 6% of the votes cast, reported On Top Magazine
on Aug. 25, placing him next to last among nine contenders.

Remember:  Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend. I stopped shopping these stores - even though I want a new washer/dryer and new clothes for the Fall.  I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's is the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
