Today's Health/Excercise Tip:
Snacking Tips for the Traveler

Eating well can be easy if you're at home with a fridge full of pre-cut veggies and fresh fruits. But what do you do when you're traveling and at the mercy of plane or hotel food?

Airports are filled with empty carbs, such as white-flour bagels, buttered pretzels and gooey cinnamon rolls. Hotel continental breakfasts are often just as bad, packing high-sugar, processed breads, including donuts, streudels and Danishes. Snaking on white-flour products the whole day long will leave you with zero energy to make it to business meetings and sightsee. If you're traveling, it's crucial that you stick to your healthy habits and take care of your body. All it takes is a little preparation and advance planning.

If you know you'll be waiting around in the airport before embarking on a long flight, bring along some healthy snacks to fill you up without extra calories. Stock your carry-on with baggies filled with 1/4 cup each of dried fruit and nuts or pack a whole-wheat bagel with a slice of low-fat cheese (mozzarella is a great choice). For a little treat, try 100-calorie snack packs of cookies and chips.

Though it's great if you have time to plan ahead, last-minute travel arrangements may make it impossible for you to bring a healthy mini-meal. But don't worry, because not all airport fare will expand your waistline. Try a salad with grilled chicken (go easy on the dressing) or pick up some yogurt and fresh fruit. Just make sure to steer clear of frappuccinos and other sugar-filled coffee drinks.

At a hotel breakfast, opt for scrambled eggs, low-fat milk and fruit. But remember that you are on vacation and are entitled to a little fun with your diet. If in Italy, feel free to indulge in a plate of authentic pasta. Just watch your portion sizes. Have you been drooling over the thought of the rich chocolate cake that's served in your Berlin hotel? Have a slice by all means, but skip the bread with dinner. No matter where you travel, snack sensibly for all day energy so you'll have more room for treats at dinnertime and dessert. You'll also feel better about your body, respect yourself and look fabulous in your vacation photos!

Bullied for being gay, 13-year-old hangs himself
9/24/ 2010 - KGET

Friends and neighbors of Tehachapi 13-year-old who attempted suicide Sunday said the boy is openly gay and was taunted by bullies for years, at school and at a local park.

The bullying might have been what led him to try to take his own life, friends said. The boy hanged himself at his own home from a tree and has been on life support since Sunday, according to the Tehachapi Police Department.

He previously attended Jacobsen Middle School, but was put on independent study this year. Friends said he was still bullied outside of school for being gay and bisexual, but he didn't tell close friends how the bullying affected him.

Police said they are investigating whether the attempted suicide was linked to bullying.

District administrators said they have no reports of the teen being bullied at school, but they take bullying very seriously and address the issue multiple times throughout the school year.

But some parents said the school hasn't done enough to prevent bullying and they are concerned about their children's safety at school.

Jacobsen Middle School has provided grief counselors to students all week, but students said morale is low even for those who didn't know the teen well.

Remember:  Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend. I stopped shopping these stores - even though I want a new washer/dryer and new clothes for the Fall.  I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's is the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
