It's having "hopefulness and confidence about the future or successful outcome of something; a tendency to take a favorable or hopeful view." Helen Keller wrote: "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence."
Those of you who fall on the pessimistic side of life's fence have a much tougher row to hoe each day. Pessimism will drain your emotional batteries, poison your motivational well and leave you feeling lost, angry and frustrated. Optimism, on the other hand, will lighten your emotional load, bring more joy into your life, lift your spirit and make you a more pleasant companion. A reader once commented, "With each sunrise, there is a new opportunity to start over." That's the perfect attitude to have if you want to bring a more optimistic view into your life.

The Australian / September 20, 2010A prominent Russian gay rights activist who vanished from a Moscow airport last week said he was back in the capital.He was held for more than two days by men he believed were state security agents.
The disappearance of Nikolai Alexeyev from Domodedovo airport sparked concern in western Europe, with the French Foreign Ministry publicly calling on Russia to respect his freedom of movement.
Mr Alexeyev is known in the international gay rights movement for his repeated efforts to organise parades in Moscow.
He said yesterday he was heading to board a Geneva-bound plane last Wednesday, but was stopped by officials after passing through passport and security control and told his baggage needed further inspection.
Swiss Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Kreuzer said the company was told Mr Alexeyev had not properly passed security. A Domodedovo official said Mr Alexeyev had been detained after refusing to remove his footwear at the security check.
After that, he said, he was spirited out of the airport by four men who were not in uniform and driven to a police station in the city of Kashira, about 40km from the airport.
Once there, he said the men insulted him and demanded he withdraw law suits he had filed with the European Court of Human Rights protesting against Moscow's ban on gay rights rallies. The men also confiscated his mobile phone, he said.
Russia's Interfax news agency on Friday reported it had received text messages from his phone claiming he was withdrawing the European court suits. Mr Alexeyev denied sending the texts. He was released on Saturday.
Homosexuality was decriminalised in Russia in 1993, but anti-gay feelings remain strong.
