    You may enjoy treating yourself to the occasional dinner out or grabbing takeout when you're tired, but the healthiest option is making your own meals at home. Preparing your own food allows you to control the portion sizes and ingredients, so there are no unpleasant surprises, such as butter in your broccoli, animal lard in your beans, or extra salt in your soup.

    Cooking at home gives you access to all the tools that can help make your meal diet-friendly. You can use measuring cups and spoons to ensure that you use the correct amount of oil and butter - two ingredients that are often used in excess at restaurants. At-home food preparation can save you money too. A typical strawberry smoothie at your local juice bar can set you back $5, but you can make your own healthy version at home with ingredients that total less than $1.

    Kitchen scissors are another good tool to have. Many restaurants serve fatty cuts of meat, but if you're the chef you can easily snip off the extra fat and remove the skin before baking. Cut the fat     and rely on spices like pepper and garlic to add flavor. Many restaurant meals are rich in meats and starches but low in veggies, so make sure you get your five-a-day by cooking veggies at home. And if you typically let your carrots or tomatoes rot because cutting them up seems too daunting, invest in a vegetable chopper.

    It's OK to eat out every once in a while, but most of the time try to make your own healthy meals at home. Your new healthy habit will likely whittle your waistline as well!

    Two Marines Avoid Hate Crimes Charge in Gay Beating Case

    The District Attorney for Chatham County., Georgia, has decided not to charge two Marines with a hate crime in the beating of a gay man in Savannah.

    The attack took place shortly before 4:00 a.m. on June 12, reportedly     because the soldiers thought that the victim, Kieran Daly, was "winking" at them. Daly was struck on the back of the head, media accounts said, and a police officer who saw the two Marines running and then heard about the attack gave chase and placed the two under arrest.

    The Marines were identified as Keil Cronauer, 22, and Christopher Stanzel, 23. Cronauer and Stanzel said that Daly had come on to them, saying sexually suggestive things and following close behind them; but their story was contradicted by witnesses who said that the Marines accused Daly of winking at them.

    Daly suffered bruising to the brain, but was talking to the media from the hospital later that day. "The guy thought I was winking at him," Daly recounted. "I told him, 'I was squinting, man... I'm tired.' " Daly added, "the last thing I remember is walking away. I remember the feeling of getting hit, but I only kind of remember it." According to witnesses, one of the Marines punched the back of Daly's head as he was walking away.

    There is no state law that provides hate crimes protections for GLBTs in Georgia, so GLBT groups called for the case to be treated as a hate crime under federal law. However, federal and local investigators determined that the attack would not be prosecuted as a hate crime.

    "I can't speak on the specifics because this is pending litigation, but for a crime to be considered a felony there has to be proof of a sustained injury," said Chatham County DA spokesperson Alicia Johnson, the  GA VOICE     reported on Aug. 27. If hate crimes charges were to be filed, they would be felonies. Added Johnson, "It's my understanding Daly suffered only a punch. Based on his medical records we could not upgrade the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony."

    Witnesses said that Cronauer and Stanzel were socializing with Daly and his friends and became upset and confrontational when they found out that Daly was gay. At one point, witnesses recounted, Cronauer demanded to know whether Daly had "winked at" him, after which Stanzel circled around behind Daly and delivered a blow to his head. Daly fell unconscious to the ground, and the Marines fled; Daly's friends thought that he had no pulse and began attempts to deliver CPR.

    That was when the police officer who had seen the Marines sprinting from the scene came up and asked what was going on. Upon being informed of the attack, the officer chased after the Marines, who told him that they were simply waiting for a friend. Cronauer said that a gay man had "harassed" them, the police report added.

    The Marines are scheduled to appear in court to answer to misdemeanor battery charges on Sept. 9

    "We can't even walk on the street and be out and gay on the street," said Jesse Morgan of Armstrong State University's Gay-Straight Alliance at the time of the attack. "Our punishment for that is anyone attacking us just for being who we are. This type of behavior has to stop."

    GLBT advocacy organization Georgia Equality issued an action alert via email, telling recipients of the message that, "Although there were multiple eye-witnesses who confirmed that the attack was unprovoked, local police authorities charged the men with a misdemeanor and released them into the custody of military police."

    Added the release, "Georgia Equality is working with members of the local community in Savannah to coordinate a response to this vicious attack, the third in less than five years."

    GLBT groups encouraged the local community to contact state lawmakers and press for a state law against bias crimes targeting gays.

    "Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."

    Remember:  Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend.
