Today's Health/Excercise Tip:
Take High Dose Vitamin D3 To Stop Swine Flu - H1N1
September 24, 2009 - By Michael Mooney; WEHO NEWS

West Hollywood, California (Thursday, September 24, 2009) - Some of the brightest nutritionally-knowledgeable medical doctors, including world-renowned vitamin D expert and head of the Vitamin D Council, Dr. John Cannell believe that boosting immune function by using high dose vitamin D3 is a safe, effective, low cost option to stopping infections and deaths from swine flu.

Unfortunately, these doctors aren't being heard at the National Institutes of Health, where the government is promoting the administration of about seven billion dollars in questionably toxic swine flu vaccines that the World Health Organization says haven't been tested enough to be sure of safety.

The US government Department of Health and Human Services has contracted Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, MedImmune, Australian drug maker CSL and Sanofi-Pasteur to make the vaccines and make hundreds of millions in profit.

Vitamin D3 may well work just as well or better, be completely safe, and cost hundreds of times less.

So far, the CDC says 41 kids are dead from the H1N1/Swine Flu Virus.

Communications between Dr. Cannell and other doctors who employ progressive nutrition confirm that doctors who prescribe vitamin D3 based on patient's blood tests are seeing no patients who are using vitamin D3 come down with swine flu, while doctors who aren't prescribing vitamin D3 are seeing about 10 patients a week come down with it.

Dr. Cannell has written extensively on how influenza, no matter what type of flu, occurs more often when UVB-rich sunlight and thus vitamin D3 production by the body are at their lowest.

For instance, influenza strikes more in the winter time, and in the Northern states, where there's less UVB-rich sunlight. UVB light is what makes your skin manufacture vitamin D3.

If you ask your doctor to test your blood vitamin D3, ask for the "OH-vitamin D3" blood test. You may be surprised to find that's it's lower than you'd think, even if you get regular exposure to sunlight.

While some people's blood tests can be as low as 10 ng/ml, for best immune function experts say it should be 40 to 60 ng/mL. Above 60 ng/ml there are safety concerns.

This is true if you are using vitamin D3 to prevent cancers, including breast, prostate and colon cancers, improve bone density, reverse multiple sclerosis, reduce the risk of bone fractures, lose weight or just to get the "happy" effect on the brain that optimal vitamin D3 causes.

All these effects are documented in quality medical journal studies. And according to a study in the Journal of Neurology, older men with the highest vitamin D3 levels scored significantly better in brain tests, including information processing speed. (Vitamin D3 is three times better used by the body than D2.)

This last year, vitamin D3 has amazed researchers, including myself, with data showing that vitamin D3 provides tremendous support to the body's immune response, apparently better than vitamin C.

One recent study of 18,883 subjects by Ginde, in the Archives of Internal Medicine (February 23, 2009) showed that higher vitamin D3 blood levels were associated with 36 percent less upper respiratory infections during a six year time period, especially for people with lung diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Asthmatics with low vitamin D were five times more likely to suffer upper respiratory infections than people with higher levels. Less asthma attacks, head colds and sinus problems? Sounds like a lot of people should ask their doctor for a vitamin D3 blood test right away.

Do you need to take vitamin D3? If you get plenty of sunlight at the right time of day, between 10 AM and 2 PM and your skin converts sunlight into vitamin D3 efficiently, you might not need to supplement.

Many people, however, don't get enough sunlight or don't make enough vitamin D3 from sunlight exposure, especially if they have darker skin. And as we get older we make vitamin D3 less efficiently. People 70 years old make about 25 percent as much as people 25.

So if you're like most of us you need to take a supplement. So, how much? Well, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D3, depending on age is between 200 - 600 IU per day.

The four world's authorities on vitamin D note that many studies show this to be woefully inadequate, so last year they petitioned the US government to raise the RDA.

Their suggestion is that the adult RDA should be 1,000 IU per day, with the RDA just being a subsistence level, not an optimal health dose or to reduce the potential for cancers or swine flu.

No, to get optimal blood levels they say, "In the absence of adequate sunlight, some people may need as much as 4,000 to 10,000 IU per day." Dr. Reinholdt Vieth, perhaps the most highly regarded vitamin D3 expert said in a radio interview that he conducted a study with subjects who took 10,000 IU per day and found no toxicity, so he takes 8,000 IU per day.

My own experience is that some brands of vitamin D3 don't raise my blood levels. So, I've been trying different brands and doing blood tests with a doctor who is a research partner.

The most efficient form of vitamin D3 is emulsified vitamin D3, which is a liquid that is administered from a dropper.

Only two companies make emulsified vitamin D3, Life Extension Foundation and Biotics Research. Either one of them should raise anyone's blood vitamin D levels significantly, even with only one drop.

I have also seen friend's vitamin D blood levels increase when they take Life Extension 5,000 IU vitamin D capsules.

However, I've seen vitamin D made by good companies fail to raise my blood levels to the desired range, above 50 ng/mL. Whatever brand you take, if blood tests show it works, stick with it.

Taking enough vitamin D long term is one of the best ways to preserve your physical and mental health and well-being. And if you do it right away maybe you can avoid having the flu at all.

"He's a basket case. He's very worried about his safety and so am I," Los Angeles attorney Ally Bolour told the Daily News.

"We have gotten anonymous death threats from outside the country."

Bolour said Ali Ahmad Asseri has been in and out of hiding as he awaits a decision from the Department of Homeland Security.

The prospective defector gained international fame over the weekend when he told NBC News that his superiors yanked his diplomatic passport after discovering he was gay - and friends with a Jewish woman.

He was effectively dismissed from his job as first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, he claims, and fears imminent deportation to Saudi Arabia, where homosexual acts are illegal and punishable by death.

"If I go back to Saudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight," Asseri said in an email to NBC.

Asseri was interviewed by a Homeland Security official Aug. 30 and expects to get an answer on his fate in the coming days, Bolour said.

In a bitter letter to the Saudi king posted on Arabic news sites, Asseri reportedly criticized the "distorted thinking" and "militancy" of some Saudi religious leaders and complained that the consulate bankrolled four princes living the high life in the U.S.

"(It's) as if they were created from light, and I am from a sticky clay," he wrote of the unnamed royalty, according to a web translation of the letter.

"His asylum application is based on his sexual orientation, not on any cache or information he has from his position as a diplomat," the lawyer said.
