Today's Health/Excercise Tip:Fish Oil Helps Diabetes ControlIs there any benefit to taking a fish oil supplement if you have diabetes? It's worth asking your doctor about, says the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, and has been linked to decreased risk of heart disease and strokes. Studies of omega-3 fatty acids began when researchers found cultures, such as the Eskimos, who live on an enormous amount of fat from fish, seals and whales, and rarely suffer heart attacks. Fish oil has also shown promise as an anti-inflammatory treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain and lupus. It also might have positive effects on various psychiatric disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder.
Since North American diets don't provide the high levels of omega-3 necessary to be beneficial, supplements are sold in the vitamin sections.
For people with diabetes, omega-3 supplements may lower fatty particles in blood known as triglycerides. High triglyceride levels are one of the reasons people with diabetes have an increased risk for heart disease. Two to five teaspoons of fish oil daily were shown to reduce triglyceride levels by an average of 30%-50%, according to the ADA.
Unfortunately, fish oil also slightly raised the levels of LDL cholesterol, another fatty particle that is connected to heart disease. Also, blood sugar levels showed a slight increase by the daily use of fish oil.
If you are interested in investigating possible benefits of fish oil to your diet, ask your doctor about your triglyceride and LDL levels. As an initial step, you might consider replacing some red meat in your diet with fish several times a week.

September 17th, 2010SANTA MARIA – Multiple news sources are reporting that a gay waiter at the Denny's Restaurant was stabbed in the neck and throat early Thursday morning and that police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.The Santa Maria Times said the victim, who is in his 30s, is expected to survive the attack that occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sept. 16.
Curtis Martin, 24, was arrested after fleeing the scene. The Associated Press reports that police said the suspect asked the victim if he was gay, then attacked him with a knife that was in his possession.
Per the Santa Maria Times:
A Santa Maria man was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of attempted murder and committing a hate crime after an employee at a Denny's Restaurant was stabbed in the neck and throat.
Police responding to the call of battery at 3:28 a.m. found the victim, an adult man in his 30s, outside the restaurant at 1019 E. Main St. with a laceration to the side of his throat. He also had been stabbed in the side of his neck. The man was specifically targeted by 24-year-old Curtis Martin because of his perceived sexual orientation, police said.
The victim was transported to Marian Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.
"The injuries were not life-threatening and he's expected to fully recover," said Santa Maria police Lt. Dan Ast, noting that the knife did not pierce any vital body parts.
Ast said that Martin knocked on the window of the restaurant, which was closed, and asked to use the restroom. He was let in and approached a group of Denny's employees sitting at a table. Martin asked the victim, a waiter, if he was gay and when the victim replied that he was, he was attacked, according to Ast.
Martin used a knife he had brought with him, Ast said.
After the assault, Martin ran to his vehicle and was seen fleeing the scene westbound on Main Street, police said. His vehicle was located a short time later and Martin was arrested and booked into county jail.
Remember: Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend. I stopped shopping these stores - even though I want a new washer/dryer and new clothes for the Fall. I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time! Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's is the right thing to do. Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being. They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp. Therefore, goodbye Target and Best Buy! The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions! What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
