Little Known About Health Needs in U.S. for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People
By Daniel J. DeNoon - WebMD Health News / March 31, 2011
Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered Americans are distinct populations with unique health health needs -- but what are those needs?
"We do not know exactly what these experiences and needs are," concludes the report of a panel of medical experts convened by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The IOM was asked to propose an LGBT research agenda by the National Institutes of Health.
"In detailing just how little is known about the health issues confronting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, the IOM report exposes the disturbing fact that our community has been largely ignored in most medical and health services research," Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, says in a news release.
The initials LGBT make it seem that people who are not heterosexual are somehow all alike. But the IOM panel quickly determined that each of these populations faces different health issues, has different access to health care, and faces different medical challenges.
A big problem with finding out what those challenges are is that there has been no systematic effort to find LGBT individuals and ask them about it.
A major change proposed by the IOM -- and likely to be taken up by the National Institutes of Health, the Health and Human Services Department, the CDC, and other data-gathering arms of the government -- is to include questions about sexual identity and sexual preference on future surveys and questionnaires as well as on electronic health records.
"It's easy to assume that because we are all human, gender, race, or other characteristics of study participants shouldn't matter in health research, but they certainly do," IOM Committee Chair Robert Graham, chair of family medicine at the University of Cincinnati, says in a news release.
While this information would be gathered just as questions about ethnicity now are collected, the IOM admits that phrasing such questions will be tricky.
The IOM panel suggests that researchers should look at LGBT health issues from four perspectives:The panel also advises the National Institutes of Health to study:
Studies taking a life-course perspective should examine challenges that LGBT individuals face during four life stages: childhood, adolescence, early middle age, and later adulthood. Studies taking a minority stress perspective should examine the health effects of stigmatization and bias on sexual and gender minorities. Studies taking an "intersectional perspective" should examine the health status of LGBT individuals in the context of their racial, ethnic, economic, and geographic diversity. Studies taking a social ecology perspective should look at how the health of LGBT individuals is affected by their community and interpersonal relationships.
The demographics of LGBT subpopulations Social influences on the lives of LGBTs Barriers to health care for LGBTs The best health interventions for LGBTs The specific health needs of LGBTsIn addition, the IOM panel encourages researchers to make better efforts to include LGBT volunteers in future clinical studies.
"We urge HHS [Health and Human Services Department] to use this report as a roadmap to fill the gaps in knowledge relating to the health status of LGBT people and commit to collecting important and lifesaving data on sexual orientation and gender identity in future health surveys," Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, says in a news release.
"This report is an important step in identifying research gaps and opportunities as part of an overall effort to understand and address the health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. We look forward to continuing our work to address these needs and reduce LGBT health disparities," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says in a news release.
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.

- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
- NEW: Boycott Donald Trump, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bulklding with Donald Trump's name! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. Remember how poorly he treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater. Unforgiveable! Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"? Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
- NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone, Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight. This is a step in the wrong direction.
Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011: Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores. This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to the entire LGBT community around the world. How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.
This group is called "Peckers Pics." The English - slang definition of "pecker" is to pluck at the truth. Therefore, we peck at items such as Gay Men's Health, Male Fitness, Gay (LGBT) Politics & Issues. In this section you may peck at each photo in order to decide the winner of the "war of the fittest!" Whereas, you should select the guy that may inspire you to exercise and "get fit!" Warning: This may stoke you!Your participation in discussion of health / news articles - appearing in this message is greatly appreciated.

Advocate / March 31, 2011
In a case that has outraged activists, a 26-year-old service member who was outed in 2009 faces a Thursday hearing in California to determine whether he should be discharged under "don't ask, don't tell."
Petty Officer 2nd Class Derek Morado will face a three-member panel at Leemore Naval Air Station in central California in a closed-door hearing.
"All I've gotten is support and shock that this is happening -- nothing negative," Morado told The Fresno Bee..Robin McGehee, executive director of GetEqual, said, "The fact that the Navy is trying to slide one more discharge in under the wire is disgusting, and must be called out for what it is -- blatant discrimination and bullying."
"Don't ask, don't tell," which led to the discharge of 261 service members in fiscal year 2010, remains in effect until the president, secretary of Defense, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certify that the military is prepared to implement repeal, followed by a 60-day waiting period. Any potential discharge under DADT would need to be certified by service chiefs -- in Morado's case, the secretary of the Navy.
