Herbal Remedies from the Expert Pharmacist

By Suzy Cohen, R.Ph., Pharmacist; Published March 21, 2011

Reduce your eyes' sensitivity to light, indulge in chocolate the healthy way and protect your heart by brushing your teeth.....

Dear Pharmacist,
My eyes' sensitivity to light is so bad I reach for my sunglasses as soon as I step out the door. Can anything help me with this problem?

-E.R., Silver Springs, Fla.

Hi E.R.,
You may be overly sensitive to glare if your eyes are strained by normal outdoor light, a computer screen, or the light of oncoming traffic at night.

To combat light sensitivity, I recommend two powerful nutrients: lutein and zeaxanthin. They're dubbed "natural sunglasses" because they nourish the retina and optic nerve inside your body and are perfectly safe to take if you use any type of prescribed eye drops (such as Timolol, Xalatan, Restasis, Zaditor, or Acular).

Eye-nourishing nutrients also benefit people who take over-the-counter allergy eye drops or "artificial tears" to address eye irritation.

When an eye doctor shines that light into your eyes he sees your retina, which appears bright yellow. It's yellow for a reason: The cells of your retina pick up and incorporate yellow nutrients known as carotenoids into their cell structure. Guess what two nutrients contain carotenoids? Lutein and zeaxanthin!

In a 2008 study, University of Georgia researchers found these two nutrients significantly increased the carotenoid content in the study participants' retinas. The subjects also experienced relief from glare sensitivity. Participants took 2 milligrams (mg) of zeaxanthin and 10 mg of lutein daily.

The old adage that carrots help your eyes is true. It's also true of tomatoes, peppers, spinach and other leafy greens.

Another dietary supplement can also help your eyes' sensitivity to light: astaxanthin, king of the carotenoids. This supplement is sold by NOW foods, Vitamin Shoppe and NSI brands. BioAstin, a supplement that contains astaxanthin, can also protect vision, as well as ease arthritis and fibromyalgia pain, and improve cholesterol and fatigue.

Did You Know?
Estrogen-containing drugs rob you of iodine which you need for breast health, proper weight loss and thyroid hormone.

Dear Pharmacist,
My wife made a resolution this year to eat healthy, but she loves candy and chocolate. Is there any way I can reward her without sabotaging her diet?

-S.H., Dallas, Texas

Hi S.H.,
Many women love chocolate! But men also covet these scrumptious treats.

I'll bet you think I'm going to tell you not to indulge, or to eat carob instead (carob is a healthy chocolate substitute that hails from the pea family).

Nope! I love chocolate, and it has great health benefits.

Chocolate is made from the beans of the cacao tree. Cacao is the powdery substance that results when cacao beans are dried, and it's loaded with antioxidants that protect against heart disease and cancer. Studies show compounds in chocolate can boost good cholesterol, lower blood pressure and help prevent blood clots. Another chocolate ingredient, theobromine, improves blood flow to the heart.

The rule is, the darker the chocolate, the higher the percent of cacao it contains, making it the healthiest kind of chocolate. Limit yourself to a piece or two of dark chocolate, the healthiest kind.

Try to choose bars that contain 65%-85% cacao. Milk chocolate contains fewer, if any, of these powerful antioxidants. And white chocolate? It doesn't even rank!

Chocolate can even be a boon to your love life: It increases psychoactive feel-good compounds, the very same ones that your brain makes when you fall in love, have an orgasm or use cannabis. And if you get addicted, it's perfectly legal.

Avoid candy bars merely coated with chocolate and jam-packed with sugar, artificial flavors and partially hydrogenated oils. And steer clear of truffles stuffed with maple, raspberry or vanilla "cream." Those are usually sugar-laden calorie bombs.

It may be a little more costly, but a small box, or bar, of high-quality dark chocolate will please her without tipping the scales.

Dear Pharmacist,
Both my father and brother have had heart attacks. I'm worried because I'm 52 years old and my blood pressure is slightly elevated. Other than that, I'm pretty healthy. Any suggestions?

-P.A., Denver, Colo.

Hi P.A.,
Just because your relatives suffered a heart attack doesn't mean you will. You're still healthy, which is good news! Remember, positive thoughts reduce stress hormones like cortisol, which damage the heart.

But since you have a family history of heart disease, remain vigilant: Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet; do aerobic exercise; and take essential nutrients that help protect your heart, maintain normal blood pressure and cholesterol.

Most Americans take blood-pressure drugs. There are more than 100 different pills to tackle high blood pressure. In some instances they're helpful, but they temporarily relax blood vessels and rob you of magnesium, zinc, calcium and iron. If you're on blood pressure medication, take a multi mineral supplement or trace mineral supplement a few hours after your dose – it can ease side effects.
While blood pressure or cholesterol medications, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and digoxin may be prescribed by your physician, it's important to realize that their effect on your body is only temporary. The underlying disease and inflammation will continue to destroy the delicate pipeline, your blood vessels, arteries and capillaries.

This is why vitamin C, lysine and proline help – they keep blood vessels flexible and help reduce plaque.

Here are a few supplements that can help protect your heart and reduce heart-attack risk. Talk with your physician before starting a supplement regimen.

Arginine: An amino acid the body makes on its own. In 2009, researchers at the University of Virginia found that it could help people with heart failure.

Ribose: A naturally occurring sugar that the body uses to make ATP, it improves blood flow and provides much-needed oxygen to the heart.

Hawthorn: This herb increases the amount of blood your heart pumps and lowers blood pressure over time. Hawthorne turns on an anti-aging switch in your body (a gene called PGC-1 alpha) that helps you burn fat more efficiently.

Fish oils: They improve cholesterol ratios and reduce risk of blood clot formation.

Taurine: It's an amino acid that helps regulate heart rhythm, regulate blood pressure and lower blood pressure.

Warning: Potassium deficiency may contribute to heart problems. If your doctor has told you that you're low in this mineral, check your medicine cabinet, because some medications can actually reduce potassium levels.

Did You Know?
Certain antidepressants, decongestants and pain-relieving narcotics can alter heart rhythm.

Dear Pharmacist,
I'm worried because heart disease runs in my family. A friend told me that brushing your teeth can prevent it. Is this true?
-K.M., Sanibel, Fla.

Hi K.M.,
Oral hygiene is critical to good health!

Columbia University Medical Center researchers found that bacteria that grow in your mouth (promoting plaque formation on your teeth and leading to gum disease) can also cause plaque formation in your arteries, which may lead to heart disease.

Sounds to me like a darned good reason to brush and floss each day! (Fun tip: I found bacon-flavored dental floss on the Internet!)

A recent British study also supports the benefits of a clean mouth: Researchers surveyed health data from more than 11,000 Scottish men and women for eight years. They found that those who reported that they seldom or never brushed their teeth were 70% more likely to experience a cardiovascular event than those who practiced better dental care. Researchers recorded 555 cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, 170 of which were fatal.

It's important to brush and floss your teeth to prevent plaque formation, even for people with dentures. Be sure to visit a dental hygienist twice a year for an exam and cleaning.

Here's another plaque-fighting tip: Scrape your tongue! You can buy a tongue scraper at any pharmacy; after brushing, draw the scraper gently down the tongue a few times, and rinse it after each scrape. That brownish-white gunk that comes off your tongue? That's mostly bacteria. Flushing that down the sink is much better than swallowing them.

This is great for people with bad breath too. For under $10, you can get a new toothbrush, tongue scraper and floss, all while sweetening your breath and protecting your ticker. What's not to love?!

Did You Know?
A new study found that taking ibuprofen 2-3 times per week may cut your risk for Parkinson's disease.
