Dogs require a lot of attention and exercise to be happy. Many parents have their children walk the dog - part of the "responsibility" of having a pet, and also known as "so I don't have to." But each time your kids walk the dog - maybe just fifteen minutes twice a day - you`re missing out on an opportunity to get outside, clear your head and burn some calories.

In a fitness campaign called Active Family, Active Dog, seven diverse families with very different lifestyles were each paired with a dog and were asked to care for it for a period of six weeks. All the participants reported lower blood pressure readings at the end of the study, and all the families reported being happier after caring for their dogs.

One reason for being happy was that they all lost weight. The seven families lost a combined 55 pounds in the short six-week period. This averaged about 2-4 pounds per adult involved. Given that you can burn at least 100 calories in the 20 minutes it takes to get Spot to do his business, it seems that the time is well spent.

Can the gay be prayed away? iPhone app ignites furor

Apple appears to have pulled the controversial app (in the USA) that purports to help troubled gays and lesbians change their sexual orientation. While it was available for download Tuesday morning, it was no longer so as of Tuesday afternoon.

The app, Exodus International, created by the Florida-based organization of the same name, promises "to address the issue of homosexuality with grace and truth." For example, a monthly column, called "Real Answers," features a Q&A on such questions as "Does Being Older Make It More Difficult To Overcome Homosexuality?" (answer: probably) and "What's A Healthy vs. Unhealthy Same-Sex Relationship?" (answer: platonic).

Critics contend that the app is yet another anti-gay slam. The group Truth Wins Out said in a statement that it had "reached out to Apple several times" without response. "If Apple does not respond, we will take steps to ensure that Apple meets the victims of 'ex-gay' ministries and learns how their lives were destroyed," Truth Win Out's Executive Director, Wayne Besen, said in the statement.

While Apple gave the app a 4+ rating -- meaning it contains "no objectionable material" -- the backlash has been fierce. Truth Wins Out posted a petition on the website Change.org, which has already logged more than 143,000 signatures. "Apple doesn't allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its app store," the petition reads, "yet it is giving the green light to an app targeting vulnerable LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a 'sin that will make your heart sick' and a 'counterfeit.' This is a double standard that has the potential for devastating consequences."

Meanwhile, a University of Minnesota professor has called on Apple to remove the app from its store, saying the app distorts his research. Pediatrics professor Gary Ramafedi, who is also director of the Youth and AIDS Projects, wrote in a letter to Apple on Monday that the app "erroneously cites my research in support of claims that homosexuality can be changed.... Associating my work with that of the ex-gay ministry and other unfounded treatments is professionally injurious and grievous." In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Ramafedi said further that the app erroneously uses his research to claim that young people are "confused" about their sexual orientation.

Exodus International vigorously defends its decision to release the app. Jeff Buchanan, Senior Director of Church Equipping and Student Ministries for the organization, said in a telephone interview, on Tuesday, that the app represents a natural evolution of Exodus' activities. "We simply wanted to make media accessible on all of the platforms out there," he said.

Moreover, he denies the charge that Exodus is targeting young people. "The app is meant to appeal to a wide demographic," he contends. "Our message is one of love and acceptance for those who are unwanted same-sex attracted. We are not out to 'cure' homosexuals. That's absolutely not part of our methodology."

Buchanan maintains that Apple should continue to allow the Exodus International app in its store as a reflection of tolerance and diversity of views. Referring to the gay-friendly app of the Metropolitan Community Church of New York, Buchanan says, "Theirs is a message in opposition to ours, and we just want to have equal representation" in the iTunes store.

Apple did not return calls for comment Tuesday morning, but the app was no longer available to U.S. useres as of Tuesday afternoon.
