Seeing All Angles of Diabetes
 
Diabetes is the No. 1 cause of blindness in the U.S., says the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Fortunately, many eye problems are treatable if they are identified early.

One of the most serious eye problems caused by diabetes is retinopathy. In this disease, fragile blood vessels grow in the back of the eye and can bleed easily. Such bleeding can cloud the vision and lead to permanent scarring of the back of the retina.

People with diabetes may also have cataracts (a permanent clouding of the lens), "floaters" that temporarily interfere with vision, or a swelling of the eye nerves that can cause permanent damage to your sight (macular edema).

Abnormal function of the nerves that control the eye muscles can result in double vision. All people who develop double vision should see an eye doctor as soon as possible to rule out other possible causes, such as a small stroke.

Cataracts can be corrected surgically. Laser therapy helps stop retinopathy or macular edema if it is done before there is too much damage.

A yearly eye examination by a doctor who specializes in diabetic eye disease is the best way to detect eye problems in the early stages. Keeping your blood sugar near normal can help reduce your risk of eye disease.

Bruce Michael Hall
(born Bruce Robert Hall on September 10, 1977) is an American actor and former male fashion model.  Hall originally portrayed Reese Durkee on the NBC soap opera Passions from the show's debut in July 1999 until January 2003 when his twin brother Seth Hall took over the role. He also portrayed Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live from February 2003 until December 2003 and returned for a visit in May 2004. Along with his brother Seth, he was photographed by Steven Underhill for a book called Twins, published in 1999.

Anti-gay hatemongers aren't doing God's work

Westboro Baptist Church preaches that all the world's tragedies can be blamed on society's tolerance of gays.

Pastor Fred Phelps Sr. leads the Topeka, Kan., congregation of 70 to 80 members, most of whom are his children and grandchildren. Although Westboro identifies itself as Baptist, it is not affiliated with any known Baptist convention or association.

The congregation has made headlines by picketing at military funerals, arguing that the soldiers' deaths are God's punishment for homosexuality. The group also protested at the Rev. Jerry Falwell's funeral, calling him a "false prophet," and recently in West Virginia, where 29 miners were killed, with signs that read, "Thank God for dead miners."

Albert Snyder, the grieving father of one fallen soldier, sued Westboro for invading his privacy and inflicting emotional distress (Snyder's son was not gay). The legal dispute is now headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

There is no biblical defense for Westboro's hateful message and insensitive demonstrations. The group's philosophy and approach are riddled with contradictions. Westboro cannot truly believe in the Bible, which speaks of God's love, mercy and grace. Jesus vehemently opposed earthly agents of condemnation. He said, in Matthew, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged. … Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye." Westboro's hate is a huge plank.

Some argue that, although Westboro's protests are despicable, they are not illegal. The fear is that if the high court restricts the group's First Amendment right, it will have dire consequences for all of us. Private speech endorsing religion is protected under the Constitution's Free Speech and Free Exercise clauses. People of faith always worry that a ruling limiting First Amendment rights could affect religious speech.

It seems, therefore, that the only way to combat the Westboro radicals and other hate groups is through counter-protests. When Westboro showed up in West Virginia, counter-demonstrators staged a far bigger rally.

While Westboro's actions may be not be illegal, they are immoral and unethical. People of faith must remember that the law cannot be the sole decider of behavior. We should hold ourselves to a higher standard. The law may permit us to do certain things, but our religious convictions should restrain us.

Remember:  Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend. I stopped shopping these stores - even though I want a new washer/dryer and new clothes for the Fall.  I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's is the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
