Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:Zero Deaths From Vitamins, Minerals and HerbsCourtesy of WEHO NEWS of West Hollywood, CA @ WEHONEWS. COMAs happens every year since federal government safety reporting started in 1983, there were no deaths caused by a dietary supplement in 2009, according to a report from the US National Poison Control Centers.
The 60 poison control centers of the US National Poison Data System provide comprehensive data on what kills people every year. It is one of the few national surveillance systems in existence world-wide, and is considered a model public health surveillance system for all types of exposures that cause deaths, even including odd items like deaths from lawn mower accidents and deaths from bites from the family dog.
Reported deaths from dietary supplements over the last 27 years have generally been limited to such things as the rare consumption of an overdose of iron by a child whose parents forgot to put the legally-required child-proof cap back on a bottle of vitamins that contained iron.
Normal consumption of a multivitamin has never been shown to have caused death.
The new 200-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, shows zero deaths from multivitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; zero deaths from any other vitamin or mineral supplement; and zero deaths from amino acids or herbs.
Over half of US citizens take daily nutritional supplements. This means that at least 150 million doses are taken every day if people only take one tablet per day. This would total over 50 billion doses per year.
Since some people take more than one dietary supplement tablet per day, this number should realistically be considerably higher, perhaps 100 to 200 billion or more doses per year, making the safety of nutritional supplements all the more noteworthy.
Typically, yearly Poison Control Center reports show that there are over 250 deaths per year from OTC drugs like aspirin and over 100,000 deaths per year from prescription drugs.
While some in the media try to portray vitamins as being dangerous, this makes vitamins are at least 100,000 times safer than prescription drugs.
Unintentional deaths from prescription drugs have now surpassed motor vehicle crashes, so they are the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States, exceeded only by death from heart disease. Even cancer doesn't kill as many people as prescription drugs.
Some people mistakenly say that vitamins aren't regulated by FDA. They are regulated by over a thousand pages of FDA regulations, but the regulations don't have to be as comprehensive as regulations for prescription drugs because prescription drugs can be deadly, while vitamins are, well, basically just safe.
And to underline how safe dietary supplements are, note that in 2009 155 infant deaths occurred because of exposure to drugs coming through mother's breast milk, so vitamins turn out to be even safer than milk. Who would have known?
Take Action:
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

Catalan Spain Fire Department Calendar 2011-2012
By Travis Loller, Associated Press / USA TODAY / Jan 26, 2011NASHVILLE, Tenn. A university that came under fire from students for the departure of a lesbian women's soccer coach has added sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy, but it was not clear whether it covered sexually active gays.President Bob Fisher announced the policy approved by trustees, but wouldn't answer questions Wednesday regarding ex-soccer coach Lisa Howe. The private university has said her departure on Dec. 2 was a mutual decision. But students and players protested, saying Howe was let go because she told them she was having a child with her same-sex partner.
Belmont is a Christian university that had been affiliated with the Southern Baptists until it broke away in 2007. It is known nationally for its music business school and is widely regarded as progressive, so the accusation surprised some in the Belmont community.
At the time of Howe's departure, Fisher said that the university does not consider sexual orientation in admissions or hiring decisions. On Wednesday, he said the policy change simply affirms the practices already in place.
Asked whether his statements could be taken to mean that Howe was not pressured to leave because she came out to students, Fisher said he could not talk about any specific cases.
"This is a great victory for the values of inclusion, human dignity and respect," Howe said in a statement. "I am grateful to the Belmont board for recognizing that being gay and being Christian are not mutually exclusive. This is a landmark day."
Several reporters wanted to know whether Belmont was making a distinction between sexual orientation and sexual practice.
Belmont's student code of conduct lists sex outside of marriage as "sexual misconduct." Since gays and lesbians cannot marry in Tennessee, there is no way for them to be sexually active without violating the code.
Fisher would not say whether the new policy meant whether openly gay people could work at Belmont.
"I would put that in the category of a hypothetical," he said.
Fisher was less equivocal when asked whether homosexual practice, and not just orientation, has affected any hiring or firing decisions at Belmont.
"It has not, in my experience," he said.
The university heard criticism from students and donors after the Howe's departure. That included a statement from trustee emeritus Mike Curb, a music industry executive and major donor who called on the school to rehire Howe and "act like Christians."
Some also criticized the school for not allowing Bridge Builders, a group with a mission to support gay students and explore the intersection of Christianity and homosexuality, to form as an official student group.
Asked about the group at the news conference, Fisher said they were resubmitting their application.
"We'll see where that goes," he said.
"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
