Take Action:Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:Your Weight-Loss Solution: Try Hari Hachi Bu
By James Beckerman, M.D. / February 28, 2011
Japan has more centenarians than any other country in the world and everyone wants to know why. While it is true that Japanese cuisine highlights fish and downplays dairy, two lesser-known cultural concepts may account for much of Japanese longevity and general good health.
The first is the idea of nuchi gusui, an Okinawan term that means "life's medicine" or "food as medicine." This is the concept that food is something not only to be enjoyed, but also to be thought about critically as medicine that is being taken into the body. When you pay attention to the health impact of food as you eat it -- its beneficial vitamins and nutrients as well as the negative side effects too much sugar, sodium and saturated fat may have -- it makes it a little easier to eat healthier foods. Thinking of food as medicine makes you more mindful of every choice you make.
The second cultural concept that may be worth borrowing is the Japanese practice of hari hachi bu. Hari hachi bu is the practice of eating until you're 80% full. It's that simple. Japanese people traditionally practice restraint as a matter of course, and they use this discipline to their body's advantage with respect to calories. We know from animal studies that consuming fewer calories is associated with a longer and healthier life. This would appear to apply to human beings too, when you consider the number of hundred-year-old Japanese folks hanging around.
How do you practice hari hachi bu? Try one meal at a time. Most of us can forecast about how much we will eat at a given meal, whether it is three slices of pizza, one or two helpings of mashed potatoes, or the full bag of chips. Choose one meal each day and make a determined effort to eat only until you are 80% full. Leave 20% on the plate or in the bag or the box. And then put it away until another time. You will be surprised at how much easier it is to limit calories when you are thinking about just one meal rather than a full day, a week, or a month at a time. All the same, the calories will add up.
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
- BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
