Does Aging Equal Weight Gain?

It seems like getting older makes it so much harder to lose weight. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), there's some truth to that.

Both women and men go through midlife hormonal changes. In women, this is marked by menopause; in men, it's called andropause.

Weight gain is common during the years of menopause and andropause; however, the reasons for the weight gain aren't due to just hormones. The body's metabolism slows as we age because we lose muscle mass, and that muscle mass is what we need to burn calories.

People tend to become less active as they get older, which means they lose muscle mass and burn fewer calories each day. In addition, midlife is also a time when changes in lifestyle, mood or health can occur, which may affect eating habits and activity level.

The average weight gain is 1 pound a year from age 25-55 (or 30 pounds). Hormone changes are associated with changes in body fat distribution and may lead to more fat in the abdomen. So even if you're eating the same number of calories each day, you might gain weight if you don't maintain or increase your activity level to preserve muscle mass and burn extra calories.

But if you eat less and increase your activity level, you can lose weight no matter what stage of life you're in.

University in Arkansas blocks access to gay student website

Searcy, Ark. --- Students using computers on Harding University's network are no longer able to access huqueerpress. com, a website for gay and lesbian students.

The school is a private, Christian college, and is legally able to control campus computer systems in any way the administration wants.

But some students are outraged. On the huqueerpress.com website, they write about how they've felt in the Harding University environment. One said he'd contemplated suicide.

"I had already gotten the gun. It was under my dorm room bed," one wrote.

Dr. David Burks released this statement to a local TV station:

"Harding University is a private Christian college whose mission and policies are rooted in biblical principles. All students are given a copy of the handbook and know about our mission and policies before their first day on campus. The student handbook states that the university holds to the biblical principle that sexual relationships are unacceptable to God outside the context of marriage and that sexual immorality in any form will result in suspension from the university."

About 7,000 students attend the college, which is located in Searcy, Ark.

But, it covers the LGBT community and includes updates on Health insurance; LGBT boycott list; Westboro Church; and the end of DADT, etc...Also, updates with state gov't war against unions and people with disabilities.  The group is created for you!  There are gay teen suicides going on. There are Hate crimes against gay people.  There are gays who are fired over their sexuality.  There are gay people who died for our cause!  Are you next? Join Now!
