Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
Every Step Counts

By Jorge Cruise / March 31, 2012

Walk, don't run, to the nearest sporting goods store, and buy a pedometer. This handy little device is an inexpensive way to keep track of how many steps you take in a typical day. And while running may be a great calorie-burner, simply increasing your daily number of steps can help you lose weight.

Aim for 10,000 steps a day. That's the number researchers say will fully condition your heart and stimulate weight loss. It may sound like a lot, but you can easily achieve this number with the following five tactics:

1. Take a brisk 10-minute walk before work.

2. Walk to a co-worker's office rather than sending an email or calling on the phone.

3. Park in the farthest spot from your destination.

4. Take mini-walk breaks throughout the work day. Even just 5 minutes around the building will help clear your mind and make you more productive.

5. Drink plenty of water! You'll take more trips to the bathroom, increasing your walking time. Not to mention the metabolic boost you'll enjoy from being properly hydrated.

These strategies will bring you one step closer to your weight-loss goals!
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.

  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:

Mitt Romney Secretly Supported Anti-Gay-Marriage Group
Given recent revelations about NOM, liberal operatives see an opportunity to discomfit Romney and, once the general election is underway, paint him as a right-wing extremist.

Mar 30, 2012 - The Daily Beast - Michelle Goldberg

He donated $10,000 to the National Organization for Marriage, the anti-gay-marriage group whose memos reveal a strategy to divide blacks, Latinos, and families.

Had the news that Mitt Romney made a $10,000 donation to the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage come out a month ago instead of on Friday, it might have helped him. After all, Romney has made no secret of his opposition to same-sex marriage--indeed, he joined Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum in signing NOM's anti-gay-marriage pledge. His financial support for NOM might have bolstered him with suspicious social conservatives, and it wouldn't have surprised anyone else.

But that was before Monday, when the pro-gay Human Rights Campaign obtained secret NOM memos outlining a cynical strategy to sow racial division and encourage kids to denounce their gay parents. "The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks--two key Democratic constituencies," said one of the memos. "We aim to find, equip, energize, and connect African-American spokespeople for marriage, to develop a media campaign around their objections to marriage as a civil right; and to provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots."

The documents laid out a plan to persuade Latino voters that opposition to gay marriage is a badge of cultural authenticity, which seems particularly hypocritical given the right's usual disdain for multiculturalism. "Our ultimate goal is to make opposition to gay marriage an identity marker, a badge of youth rebellion to conformist assimilation to the bad side of 'Anglo' culture," one of the memos said. Most shocking of all, NOM budgeted $120,000 for an outreach coordinator "to identify the children of gay parents willing to speak on camera," suggesting an eagerness to rip gay families apart.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, after it published the National Organization for Marriage memos, a whistleblower came forward with copies of NOM tax forms that showed Romney's connection to the group.

As a 501(c)(4), NOM has to file a form with the IRS that lists its donors. In the public version of the form, the donors' names are redacted. When the Human Rights Campaign got a copy of the nonredacted version, it listed $10,000 from Romney's PAC, Free and Strong America. The PAC's tax records, though, showed no such donation. Eventually, the Human Rights Campaign determined that the money came from the PAC's Alabama affiliate, suggesting an attempt to evade scrutiny. "Clearly there was a strategy here to conceal," says Fred Sainz, the Human Rights Campaign's vice president.

Given recent revelations about NOM, liberal operatives see an opportunity to discomfit Romney and, once the general election is underway, paint him as a right-wing extremist. "As a leading contender for president of the United States, for him to be funding a group whose strategy memos lay out such a hateful way to divide African-Americans and the LGBT community, it's shocking," says Chris Harris, communications director of American Bridge 21st Century, the super PAC founded by Media Matters' David Brock. "When he initially donated in 2008, he may not have known that this is their strategy, but as a political leader and as an opinion leader, he has a responsibility to speak out and condemn their intention of dividing Americans."

The group has started a petition demanding that Romney distance himself from NOM, something he seems to have no intention of doing. "Gov. Romney believes marriage is an institution between a man and a woman, and his PAC made a donation to a group supporting that view," a campaign spokesperson told The Washington Post Friday.

Should Romney's NOM ties work against him, few will be happier than Fred Karger, the former GOP dirty trickster turned gay-rights activist who is running a quixotic campaign for the Republican nomination. Part of the reason Karger entered the race in the first place was because he hoped to embarrass Romney for the role that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has played in funding anti-gay initiatives nationwide.

Karger first became aware of that role while examining the funding for California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. Many of the donors, he found, had only contributed to one other political cause--the Romney campaign. Eventually, he says, he discovered that Mormons, who comprise 2 percent of California's population, provided around three quarters of the money raised to support Proposition 8. (He figured heavily in the documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition.) Soon, he became convinced that if the LDS church's anti-gay activity came to be seen as harmful to the Romney campaign, the church would back off.

As it happens, it was Karger who set in motion the events that led to the revelation of the secret National Organization for Marriage documents. In 2009 he filed a complaint with the Maine State Ethics Commission because NOM wasn't listing individual contributors to its efforts in the state, as required by Maine law. (NOM was so determined not to reveal its donors that it fought Maine's campaign-finance requirements all the way to the Supreme Court, which rejected its appeal.) The NOM memos came to light as a result of the Maine-government investigation.

Karger says he had nothing to do with digging up the 990 that links Romney to the National Organization for Marriage, though he's certainly pleased at the way the whole thing is developing. "It is kind of an interesting turn of events, I'll say that," he says, chuckling.

Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
How to Prevent the Effects of Bullying

By Diane Wedner / March 30, 2012

The documentary "Bully," which opens today, is casting a spotlight on the problem of bullying in school and online. What are the effects of bullying, and how can you stop it from happening to your kid?

Best friends Julie and Amy have an explosive argument at school. That night Julie, 13, posts mean comments on Facebook about Amy, then an embarrassing rumor. Other students add to the comments, claiming Julie's "so right about Amy."

At school the next day, Amy tries to join her friends at their lunch table. They tell her the table's full, huddling together, giggling. In this typical, but fictional, scenario, devastated Amy spirals into depression and loneliness over the next few weeks.

Sound familiar? Bullying is nothing new. We all remember the skinny boy who was shoved into his locker and the social freeze-out of the nerdy girls.

But with the rise of cyberbullying, the effects of bullying are more widespread, says psychology professor Amanda Nickerson, Ph.D., director of the Jean M. Alberti Center for the Prevention of Bullying Abuse and School Violence at State University of New York's University at Buffalo.

The Internet, smart phones and social networks provide perpetrators a nearly limitless audience, she says.

"Bullying affects millions of students and isn't limited to school grounds [anymore]," adds Jaana Juvonen, Ph.D., professor of developmental psychology at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and lead author of a 2008 study on cyberbullying.

Nearly three out of four teenagers said they were bullied online at least once during the 12-month period of the study, which included 1,454 students. The emotional effects of bullying – in school or online – are staggering, says Maxine Mintzer, Ph.D., a child psychologist in Los Angeles.

"It's so damaging," she says. "It eats away at children's self-esteem and renders them helpless."

Its physical effects can be severe too, including depression, social anxiety, headaches and stomachaches, dislike of school and poor academic grades, the UCLA study found.

Why do children bully, how does it affect victims and how can you help stop it? Lifescript's Medical Detective has the answers on this important topic.

What is bullying?

Bullying is officially defined as unwanted, repeated aggressive behavior involving an imbalance of power, according to the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). It's meant to harm or scare victims, experts say – and it's prevalent.

About one-third of all U.S. students experience some type of bullying, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It typically starts in elementary school, peaks in middle school and wanes in high school, experts say. There are three types of bullying, according to the DOE:

Verbal: The bully says or writes mean things by:

•Teasing

•Name-calling

•Making inappropriate sexual comments

•Threatening to cause harm

Social: Also called "relational," this bullying damages someone's reputation or relationships. The behavior includes:

•Purposely leaving someone out

•Encouraging others to not be friends with someone

•Spreading rumors about someone

•Embarrassing someone in public

Physical: Hurting someone's body or possessions, such as:

•Hitting, kicking or punching

•Tripping and pushing

•Taking or breaking someone's belongings

Boys are more likely than girls to be either perpetrators or victims, Juvonen says.

With boys, bullying is often physical; girls tend to rely on social behavior, she adds. What is cyberbullying?

Even though a lot of bullying now takes place online, the results are just as painful as when it happens in person. Cyberbullying involves name-calling, sending embarrassing photos and videos, sharing private information without permission and spreading nasty rumors.

"Bullying on the Internet looks similar to what kids do face-to-face in school," Juvonen says.

It's more often done by someone your kid probably knows. About half of the 1,454 students who experienced cyberbullying identified their schoolmates as the perpetrators; 43% said it was someone they knew only online, the UCLA researchers discovered.

Who is a bully?

The stereotype of a boy bully – the beefy star of the football team, surrounded by a gang of worshipful followers – isn't far from the truth, according to the online anti-bullying program Bully Free.

Besides being physically intimidating, this bully tends to be impulsive, has low tolerance for frustration and lacks empathy for others.

Girls who bully tend to be popular, using intimidation to keep their social status high, psychologists say.

Why do bullies act that way? In some cases, they seem to derive pleasure from others' fear or pain, according to Bully Free. But they're also trying to uphold their own status.

"In a word: Power," Juvonen says.

"There's desperation to belong," psychologist Mintzer adds. "They have an overpowering need to be part of a group, to not be a bullying victim."

Same goes for their followers: "They prefer to identify with the aggressor, rather than the victims, in order to feel cool themselves," she explains.Experts say bullies also:

•Do it to impress others, because they've been bullied

•Feel negatively about themselves

•Lack skills to solve social problems

•Perform poorly academically

•Abuse substances.  Among high school students, 31.7% of bullies used marijuana, according to an Ohio State University study published in the April 2012 issue of the journal Addictive Behaviors

•Have less parental supervision and poor adult role models

You can also blame the modern experience of middle school for the rise of bullying, Juvonen says.

When children move from elementary to middle school, they enter a larger, unfamiliar environment that has less supervision. Instead of staying in one class for the entire school year, they switch teachers and face different classmates every period.

As a result, they need to create a structure for themselves, Juvenon says.

"The dominant person puts everyone in order," she adds. "They intimidate the weakest. The bully becomes the cool kid." Who are the victims?

There's no one-size-fits-all description of a bullying victim, but they often have traits that make them seem weak by schoolyard standards or less mature than their peers: the shy, awkward middle-school boy with no facial hair, or the girl with undeveloped breasts.

Bullying victims, according to Nickerson, also:

•Lack power in the social hierarchy

•Cry quickly

•May be overweight or skinny

•Have a physical trait that's deemed "different," such as big ears or nose

•Don't fight back physically, or find ways of using humor to deflect the mean comments

•Are often loners, and lack powerful friends to stand up for them

•May have learning disabilities or are targeted for asking too many questions in class

•May be intelligent kids ridiculed as eggheads or nerds

What are the signs that a child is being bullied?

It can be difficult to distinguish normal teenage crankiness from a bullying reaction. But, Nickerson says, bullying may be the culprit if your child:
•Lashes out when you ask what's wrong, saying it's none of your business

•Is glued to the computer, anxiously monitoring what peers are saying about her

•Is depressed and stops socializing

•Starts bullying a younger sibling

•Complains frequently of headaches or stomachaches

•Finds excuses to stay home from school

What can be done to stop bullying?
Bullying doesn't just go away on its own, experts say. Parents and schools must join forces to stop it.

Without intervention, the effects of bullying – which include depression, low self-esteem and, in extreme cases, suicide – will continue. About 4,400 young people kill themselves each year, according to the CDC. Bully victims are 2-9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University.

A Finnish anti-bullying program called KiVA, in which students, teachers and parents all participate, examines everyone's role in bullying. The peer environment discourages the abuse. The program has reduced bullying by 50% compared to schools that don't use the program.

A similar pilot program will be launched in the U.S. – in Lawrence, Kansas – late this year. Meanwhile, so-called zero-tolerance programs often don't work, Juvonen says, "unless schools have a system in place for kids to report bullying. School personnel also need to follow up on reports."Here's what anti-bullying organizations and psychologists say you can do:

•Talk often with your child. When kids experience the effects of bullying, tell them you're there to help.

•If they won't confide in you, encourage them to talk to another family member or trusted adult at school. Encourage your kids to tell you if they're being bullied online.

•Volunteer at your child's elementary school periodically. You might witness bullying when it happens. You also can help your child make new friends by striking up conversations and bringing him or her into the chat.

•Model respectful behavior in stores, restaurants and with friends. If someone is rude to you, show your child you can handle it without blowing your top.

•Press your child's school to institute anti-bullying programs that teach empathy, healthy leadership roles and ways for kids to stand up for a fellow student who's being bullied. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services offers resources at StopBullying.gov.

•Encourage your child's school to beef up patrols in restrooms and hallways, where a lot of bullying occurs.

•If you discover a child has been cyberbullying someone, limit his or her computer privileges to school assignments only, Mintzer says. "We tell kids, `If you eat snacks before dinner, you won't get dessert.' If they bully a child, they don't get to use the computer. There are consequences for bad behavior."

•But don't take away your child's computer and cell phone if you discover they've been the victim of cyberbullying. That may worsen the effects of bullying, experts say. "It's like cutting off the arm of your child," Nickerson says. "It's the No. 1 reason kids don't tell their parents about cyberbullying."

•Don't let children keep their cell phones and computers in their bedroom at night. That way, "they can't obsessively check messages and postings," Nickerson says. "You don't let kids wander the streets all night – why should you let them be barraged with e-messages all night?"

•Establish rules when you give your child a new tech device, such as keeping their bedroom door open when online and using a cell phone.
Standing up for your bullied child can be tricky, because kids often are afraid it'll make bullying or social isolation worse, experts say. But taking action is worth the risk of temporary blowback at school.

"If kids don't speak up, there's no record of the bullying," Juvonen says. "There may be some short-term pain, but it will help in the long run."

A father responds to his gay 7-year-old
A touching blog post illustrates what a loving father should say when his second grader comes out

By Mary Elizabeth Williams / Mar 30, 2012 / Salon

You don't have to try too hard to find examples of dubious parenting out there: fat-shaming, Easter egg hunt-ruining, book-banning, hate group-hiring parenting. So it's a pleasure to end this week with a story of parenting gone right, with love and openness and acceptance. This is how it's done, folks.

The tale began a few months ago, when blogger Amelia penned a column about her then 6-year-old son's crush on Blaine from "Glee." She noted how her husband had observed at the time, "So if at 16 he wants to make a big announcement at the dinner table, we can say 'You told us when you were six.'"

They didn't have to wait nearly that long. Just last month, Amelia, who has been steadily chronicling her family's experiences in this new terrain, wrote a piece entitled "When Your 7-Year-Old Son Announces, 'I'm Gay.'" In it, she reveals how her Blaine-crushing offspring, a child who just a few months earlier had no concept of the word "gay," had casually come out to her one day, right before bounding off to play with his brothers. "Gay," he'd said. "I'm gay."

And what did mom do? She "leaned down to eye level with him and rubbed my nose against his," and told him, "I love you so much."

Amelia confesses that she's never known a child to announce his orientation so early, but acknowledges that maybe that's because "straight children have nothing to announce." In her columns, she comes across as a fearless advocate for her son, and in the comments, her readers have been sharing their own tales of knowing who they were at a very young age -- even when they didn't have the words for it.  She's also, naturally, been getting plenty of backtalk from commenters concerned that she's teaching her kid "some convoluted paradigm of sexuality" and suggesting "this mother is really really harming her child."

Now, the boy's father Dave is weighing in as well. In his "reaction to his very young gay son," the man who imagined he might be having this conversation in a decade admits, "This is not something I thought I'd be writing so soon." He laughs off stereotypical questions from readers who ask, "Isn't your son's father going to miss teaching him sports?" "Isn't not having your child get married going to just break your heart?" "How does his father react to the prancing flamer that your [sic] son must be?" because he knows that his child's declared homosexuality has no bearing on his sportsmanship. If one day his son finds someone he wants to make it official with, "Hopefully by then they can get married in whichever state they want, but if not, we'll just travel to one of the cool states and have a great time." Because, he explains, "I want him to be loved, comfortable with himself and his friends, and happy. If that means he's the next RuPaul or Joe Montana (or just that nice guy in Accounts Receivable), he will know that being himself is important, no matter who he ends up growing into."

It may seem odd to some that a child so young would identify as gay. But in the same way that blogger Nerdy Apple Bottom wrote in her gorgeous defense of her 5-year-old son's decision to dress up as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween: "If he wants to carry a purse, or marry a man, or paint fingernails with his best girlfriend, then ok." She wrote, "My job as his mother is not to stifle that man that he will be, but to help him along his way."

Heterosexuality is the default, in the realms of both children and adults. It's assumed that Barbie will pair off with Ken. But, as touchingly affirming blogs like Born This Way will attest, some kids know that's not going to happen from a very young age. My 12-year-old has this year become good friends with a gay classmate, a boy who's never declared himself as anything but who he is. My 8-year-old has a friend who insisted he was a girl from before preschool. Sometimes, the kid just knows. And it's up to the parents not to judge it or persuade the child otherwise, but just to accept him or her, in childhood and for a lifetime. That's not, as one HuffPo commenter put it, "promoting" anything. It's just doing what parents are first and foremost supposed to do. It's just making sure, in the words of Dave, that gay or straight, your child "will always know that his father loves him."
