HIV-infected men who are sexually active with other men may be at risk for spreading the infection, even if they are taking very potent anti-virus medications, according to new research from Boston scientists.
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine and Fenway Health have found that highly active antiretroviral therapy, known as HAART, does not completely suppress HIV in the semen of sexually-active HIV-infected men who have sex with men.
The scientists said their findings, which appear on-line in the journal AIDS, could indicate a transmission risk for sexually active gay men who are highly susceptible to HIV infections.
HAART therapy, which is the primary treatment for HIV and AIDS, generally suppresses HIV levels in blood and semen, and HIV transmission to sex partners.
The team of scientists recruited 101 men who receive their health care at Fenway Health in Boston. They measured HIV levels in their blood and semen. They found that 18 of the men had HIV in their blood despite being on the antiretroviral, and that half of these men also had HIV in their semen.
But the scientists also found that a quarter of the men who had no detectable HIV in their blood still had HIV in their semen. Detection of HIV in semen was strongly associated with unprotected sexual behavior, sexually transmitted infections and genital inflammation, the scientists said.
"Men who have sex with men, who are at risk for transmitting HIV, may believe that they have a low risk based on incorrect assumptions that HAART eliminates HIV from semen," the study's lead author, Joseph Politch, a research associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology at BU, said in a statement.
Until more information on transmission risk is available, Politch said it would be "prudent for sexually active HIV-infected men who are having sex with men to use condoms and other risk-reduction strategies."

Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

Suicide of gay teen brings Wash. town together

CASHMERE -- Malinda Morelos says her 14-year-old son, Rafael, left home on a snowy Sunday night in January and committed suicide.
Rafa, as he was known to his friends and family, was well liked. He ran track, loved music and, most importantly, loved his friends.
"He would always have a smile on his face," said Rafa's friend, Samantha Granados. "He was always there for me, like when I needed someone to talk to, he was always there."
Rafa was also openly gay, and his mother believes he was bullied and harassed because of that. She said she never thought about it until after he died.
"His friends told me that he was pushed, he was shoved, he was called faggot, he was called a bunch of different names," Morelos said.
On Monday evening, more than 100 people showed up at Cashmere High School for a community meeting designed to help people explore the issues surrounding Rafa's death by offering different types of support.
"This is not just a school issue," said Cashmere Superintendent Glenn Johnson. "It's a school issue, it's a community issue, it's a parent issue, it's a business leader issue and right now we need to come together and learn and get better."
Like other school districts, Johnson says Cashmere has strict policies in place regarding harassment, and he said all students and staff members are aware of them.
And while some in the community blame the school for not doing enough, some of Rafa's closest friends believe it was up to the students to come forward and say something to school officials.
"Maybe if people spoke up more about people calling him names, they probably could've done more, but since hardly anybody talked to the teachers about being named called, they couldn't have have done anything," Granados said.
