Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
The Key to Weight Loss

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / March 19, 2012

Let me begin this today by stating a simple and undeniable law of weight-loss reality: You'll never become the healthy person you want to be by remaining the person you are.

If you want to improve your health, eat healthier, feel better and lose weight, you simply must embrace the concept of change.

The problem is that we humans are creatures of habit and, as a result, have an innate tendency to resist change. We tend to establish bad habits that then become entrenched in our lives and, as a result, we continue to make the same mistakes and struggle with the same issues over and over again.

The reality is that learning to do things differently is difficult for all of us because habit is the enemy of change. It's the force of habit that draws you back to old thoughts and behaviors and prevents you from changing your eating habits and losing weight. Habit is a powerful force in our lives, because once it gets a hold of you it's difficult to break free. This is exactly how habit becomes the enemy of change.

But creating change in the way you treat and feed your body demands that old habits be broken. For those who refuse to engage in change, the price you pay is repetition.

When you boil it all down, there's only one place where real change can occur, and that's in the present moment. You can strategize to your heart's content and plan until the cows come home. But it's only in that one fleeting moment, in the heat of battle, that the opportunity for real change exists. The key to creating the kind of life-altering change needed to lose weight and become a healthier person only lies in the present moment.

As Sir Winston Churchill once wrote, "The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time."

For our purposes here, the present moment is the link in your chain of weight-loss destiny, and that chain link is only available in the now.

The now is particularly true in weight management. Weight control is a difficult and emotional endeavor that drags you to the edge of human tolerance and tugs at every emotion in the human condition. As I interact with people going through this epic daily battle, the agony and frustration of this struggle is a common topic of conversation. People are always wondering if they have what it takes to change their lives and get healthy.

Whether you succeed or fail depends on the actions you take and decisions you make along the way. And where you end up is a direct result of the decisions that you make in the NOW. Each and every choice you make (the links in your health chain) has the potential of either bringing you closer to your goal or taking you farther away. That's why it's so important to be a good decision-maker, and that means learning to manage the moment.

If I can be so bold as to greatly oversimplify, weight management is a decision-making problem. Sure, you need information about nutrition, and yes, you must exercise, but, for the most part, this all comes down to simple decision-making.Everyone knows that they should eat right and exercise regularly, but most people consistently choose not to. It's only in the NOW that change can take place and it is only in the NOW that the opportunity to create a healthier future exists.

The physical act of eating always follows the mental decision to eat. You decide to eat before the actual eating begins. There's not great mystery here about which comes first.

Success lies in choosing wisely and being mindful of the potential for change that lives in each and every moment.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite sayings: The past is history. The future is mystery. The NOW is a gift. That's why they call it the "present."

Learning to manage those moments of truth is a true gift indeed, because if you can manage that moment, you can solve this problem.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

This group is called "Peckers Pics." The English - slang definition of "pecker" is to pluck at the truth. Therefore, we peck at items such as Gay Men's Health, Male Fitness, Gay (LGBT) Politics & Issues. In this section you may peck at each photo in order to decide the winner of the "war of the fittest!" Whereas, you should select the "Male Model" that may inspire you to exercise and "get fit!" Warning: This may stoke you!

Kirk Cameron defends gay comments, talks to 'Today' and Fox News
March 20, 2012 / Los Angeles Times / Patrick Kevin Day

Kirk Cameron, once the heartthrob of many because of his "Growing Pains" tenure as All-American teen Mike Seaver, has spent the last few weeks on the receiving end of criticism following comments he made on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" about homosexuality.

On Tuesday morning, Cameron attempted to fight back against the criticism and deflect some of the blame onto the media.

When "Today's" Ann Curry asked Cameron about his comments -- which included him calling homosexuality "unnatural" and "destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization" -- Cameron responded: "I love all people. I hate no one. When you take a subject and reduce it to something like a four-second sound bite and a check mark on a ballot, I think that's inappropriate and insensitive. The truth is that these are issues that are very personal. These are things that need to be discussed best, I believe, in the context of a personal friendship of someone who's asking the question. So when things get edited down it doesn't reflect, it certainly didn't reflect my full heart on the matter."

In other words, he thinks Piers Morgan had no business having him discuss it on the air.

He continued his defense on "Fox and Friends," saying that Morgan's asking about the topic, already knowing his feelings on the matter, was wrong.

"I don't change my feeling about the comments," he said. "To take some answers, reduce an important and personal and sensitive issue to a four-second sound bite and toss it into a community to start a political bonfire and really upset people you're looking to protect was disingenuous."

Cameron was also upset that the question came during an interview to promote his documentary, "Monumental."

Not willing to take things lying down, Morgan responded to Cameron's finger-pointing on Twitter, saying, "Kirk Cameron is moaning everywhere today that I stitched him up by releasing a 4-second 'soundbite' re his comments on gay marriage. These are the 4 seconds: homosexuality is 'unnatural..detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization'. Mr Cameron 'stands by the comments', despite his whining. So I'll let others decide if he was stitched up...or just a bigot. Re #KirkCameron, I respect his religious beliefs -- just don't respect his use of bigoted, inflammatory language re homosexuality. End."

Later in the day, Morgan extended this invitation to Cameron: "Kirk Cameron should come back on my show, live and uncensored, and we can debate this properly. Your call, Kirk. #CNN."
