OK everyone, listen to the actual quote presented by none other than Keith Olbermann on his "Countdown" show on MSNBC in 2009. I trust Mr. Olbermann - he is a total straight shooter. In my judgment, the actual quote is far less explosive or evidence of racism than many pundits - including Newt Gingrich and Pat Buchanan - suggested. As I read it, there is no sexism or racism involved - just fairness.

I also agree that President Obama is trying to secure the repeal of DOMA and the achievement of nationwide opportunity for gay marriage in a way that provides for maximum support, given the divisive political reality in Washington. Despite the major social progress he has achieved as President, he cannot risk losing or completely alienating substantive constituencies during an election year. While, in his capacity, he may not have been as clear in his use of words as you would like, Jeffrey, but remember that he has already directed the Justice Department to stop enforcing DOMA - that is a huge step that has already caused political fallout for him.

But, in a larger sense, the purpose of debate is to air differing views and their accompanying support and allow people to make their own decisions based on merit. We do not all have to agree - in fact, debate is healthy and important. As human beings, we all bring different experiences to this group and that means that there will be multiple viewpoints. But we must feel free to air them - even in ways that might make some uncomfortable. That is what this country is all about. Questioning each others' opinions, viewpoints and documentation is also healthy and not divisive or suggestive of rejection. Jeffrey: your background and life experiences are important, but just as important as everyone else's. And both criticism and probing are part of the debate process - not evidence of rejection of your ideas.

Just my 2 cents.

Moderator: Thank you, but I did check with Jeffrey's status after I sent my email to my group. And Jeffrey left the building. ...But, I will be check the Utube you sent. and appreciate your reply. Thanks again Warren ...Jake

PS. I just watched and listened to the video 3 times and what Sotomayor stated was brilliant. I can see how taking it out of context and how some who are prejudiced would never understand it.
Thank you for sharing ....jake
