Creating Change

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / March 28, 2012

One of my favorite sayings goes as follows: You will never become who you want to be by remaining who you are. What I like so much about this phrase is it hits the nail right on its proverbial head regarding change. Take weight loss and lifestyle change, for example. If you are unhappy, or worse yet, disgusted with the present state of your health and condition of your body, you may be one of the many who are considering taking action. However, when all is said and done, you can't be that healthy person you want to be by remaining the unhealthy person you presently are. If it's a healthier life and a fitter body you desire, change has to become your roommate and constant companion.

The key to creating change begins in your mind. If you want to eat healthier and lose weight, you simply must stop making mindless decisions about your daily health. The one step you must take is to eliminate something I've written about before called the MEE Syndrome (Mindless Emotional Eating). The simple act of being aware of everything you are about to put into your mouth interrupts the MEE Syndrome and sets the stage for healthier choices. This is why food journaling is such a helpful habit. It presents an organized way to inject more mindfulness into your daily health choices. If change is something you are considering, why not make today the day you turn that thought into action?
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

Moving Beyond 'Gay Is the New Black': NOM's Divisive Racial Politics and the LGBT Movement's Need for a Racial Justice Agenda
Huffington Post / 3-28-2012 / Jessie Daniels, Ph.D

There's a lot of buzz about the just-revealed internal memos from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) that make plain their divisive racial strategies to oppose marriage equality. The key strategy NOM has employed is wedge politics, that is, seeking to drive a wedge between African Americans and Latinos on one side and those in the LGBT movement on the other.

Here is just some of what the NOM memos say about African Americans (emphases are mine):

The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks -- two key Democratic constituencies. Find, equip, energize and connect African American spokespeople for marriage; develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots. No politician wants to take up and push an issue that splits the base of the party. Fanning the hostility raised in the wake of Prop 8 is key to raising the costs of pushing gay marriage to its advocates and persuading the movement's allies that advocates are unacceptably overreaching on this issue.

NOM's strategy for Latinos looks like this:

Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values? We can interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity.

You can read all the documents here, thanks to HRC.

To say that NOM's strategy is racist is stating the obvious. Sometimes it's worth stating the obvious, but I want to make a slightly less obvious point, and that is that the revelations about NOM's racial politics highlight the LGBT movement's need for a racial justice agenda.

The truth is that African Americans and Latinos are just as likely to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender as white people. Moreover, Zack Ford makes the excellent point that "NOM's tactics seek to erase an entire population of people who live at the intersections of these experiences, limiting their ability to fulfill their complete identities."

That's exactly right. The NOM strategies not only are racist but they assume that "gay" and "black" or "lesbian" and "Latina" are somehow mutually exclusive categories, that you can't be both gay and black, or lesbian and Latina. The reality is that the LGBT movement has also ignored the "both/and" identities. How else can we explain the popularity of the "gay is the new black" slogan, popularized during the Prop 8 campaign? We're right to get outraged over NOM's racial strategy to divide "gays and blacks," but this division is one we have to take a serious look at within the LGBT movement, which currently lacks a racial justice agenda.

What would it look like if the LGBT movement had a racial justice agenda? Well, for starters, we'd see our struggle for equality tied to other movements for justice, not just by analogy. So, for example, there's been a noticeable silence about Trayvon Martin on most of the mainstream gay blogs, probably because most (white) gay folks don't see the case as "our issue." But as Zach Stafford recently pointed out here on HuffPost, gay folk should care about Trayvon Martin because all of us who are "outsiders" -- whether because of sexual orientation, gender non-conformity, or race -- can be targets of violence.

When we say that the gay right movement is the new civil rights movement, we're playing into the divisive racial politics of NOM. We have to do better than "gay is the new black." We have to see that the fight for sexual equality hasn't replaced the fight for racial equality, because that's not over. When the LGBT movement moves beyond shallow slogans like "gay is the new black" to embrace a racial justice agenda that sees our struggle as tied to others, then we'll have truly won a victory against opponents like NOM that can only see "gays and blacks" as an easy place to drive a wedge.
