Are You Too Busy Cutting Trees?

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / April 30, 2012

For those who want to lose weight and get healthy, one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is not becoming overwhelmed with this formidable task. In a nutshell, the more weight you have to lose, the longer it will take. I was thinking about this the other day when I ran across a short parable that brought it all home for me. It goes like this:

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter went to work for a timber merchant. The pay was good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. On the first day, his boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter cut down 18 trees. "Congratulations," the boss said. "Keep it up!" Very motivated by the boss' words the woodcutter tried even harder the next day but found that he was only able to cut down 15 trees on day two. The next day he tried even harder but, at the end of day three, he had only cut down 10 trees. Day after day he found himself cutting down fewer and fewer trees. "I must be losing my strength," the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized saying that he could not understand what the problem was. "When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked. "Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been too busy cutting trees..."

This little parable about cutting trees beautifully captures a major mistake made by those wanting to lose weight, reclaim their bodies and live a healthier life. Each day provides you with numerous opportunities to "sharpen your axe." Each healthy choice you make sharpens your axe and you simply can't get where you want to go without sharpening your axe every day. You must tend to the issues of today before you can realistically entertain thoughts of tomorrow. So I suggest you look forward to each day's choices. Because each health decision that you make provides you with an opportunity to sharpen your axe, take down another tree in the Weight Loss Forest and close the gap between who you are and who you want to be.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

This group is called "Peckers Pics." The English - slang definition of "pecker" is to pluck at the truth. Therefore, we peck at items such as Gay Men's Health, Male Fitness, Gay (LGBT) Politics & Issues. In this section you may peck at each photo in order to decide the winner of the "war of the fittest!" Whereas, you should select the "Male Athlete" that may inspire you to exercise and "get fit!" Warning: This may stoke you!

Teen's suicide spurs community to face gay bullying in northern Utah
Stigma » Organizers demand schools change attitudes about the torment of gay youths.

By Patty Henetz /  The Salt Lake Tribune / Apr 30 2012

A week ago, an overflow crowd at the Weber County Library watched a documentary about the torments endured by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens at the hands of bullies. When 18-year-old Alex Smith's turn came, he told the audience about the bullying his boyfriend experienced at his high school.

Unbeknownst to Smith or anyone else, Mountain Green resident Jack Denton Reese, 17, had ended his life the previous day. Funeral services were held Friday, and he was buried in Ben Lomond Cemetery.

Reese's death is the latest known suicide of a gay teen in northern Utah, and the community is responding with an event Tuesday night at the Ogden Amphitheater to support LGBT youths, to grieve and to speak about the outrage of bullying, said Marian Edmonds, executive director of Ogden's OUTreach Resource Center, an advocacy organization for LGBT youths.

The purpose is to demand change in the attitudes of individuals and institutions, particularly schools, about all types of hazing and harassment, but especially that aimed at gay teens, Edmonds said. The community dialogue, which will conclude with a candlelight vigil, also aims to shine a necessary light on teen suicides so often shrouded in secrecy and shame.

That was the aim of OUTreach; Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE); and the Weber State University LGBT Initiatives when the advocacy groups on April 23 screened "Bullied," a 2010 documentary film produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The film chronicles one student's ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies in middle and high schools.

"There are so many suicides no one ever hears about," Edmonds said. The terrible coincidence of Smith's description of Reese's ordeal became known April 24, when Smith shared the news of Reese's death on Facebook.

From there, "it just snowballed," Edmonds said. "The way it all unfolded, there was this huge response: 'Oh, not another one.' "

An obituary posted by Myers Mortuary said Reese died in Mountain Green. He was good with computers, enjoyed skiing, loved animals "and will miss his cat, Cat." He was artistic and learning Japanese.

Kendall Wilcox, a gay man and former executive producer at Brigham Young University's broadcasting department who was fired after making a documentary about being gay and Mormon, will be a speaker at the Tuesday night event. He said he has been told by authorities, unofficially, that the suicide rate for LGBT youths or adults in Utah is one per week.

Wilcox works with Edmonds at OUTreach, where he met Smith and is working with him on other film projects about bullying.

National experts who have assessed how schools deal with bullying have been critical of Utah, he said.

"The number one tactic for bullying is homophobia," Wilcox said. "Whether the child is gay or not, the epithet with the most detraction is 'fag.' It's so systemic. It starts with parents, swings through the students and goes to school administrators. On either end of that is adults. It just compounds and compounds itself. Clearly the suicide [rate] is precipitated by an unwelcoming society."

Charles Lynn Frost, a Salt Lake City actor and activist, is co-producing the Tuesday event. "There is a problem [with bullying] in all school districts," he said. "Some are addressing the issue much more courageously than others. ... Everybody should be safe in their school, period, no exceptions."

Weber School District spokesman said that although Reese wasn't a student at Weber High at the time of his death, the school offered help to grieving students.

"As students started to be aware [of his death], we did have counselors on call," Nate Taggart said.

Weber District student services director Bob Wood said the district has a formal set of policies to counter and punish bullying. "We want to make sure all of our students are safe from any threat, physical threats, hazing, bullying, discrimination," he said.

Reese previously was a student at Morgan High School. Morgan School District Superintendent Ken Adams said the school also had counselors available to students.

Iowa paper devotes front page to fighting bullying
By TIMBERLY ROSS / Associated Press / Apr 22, 2012
In a rare and forceful act of advocacy, an Iowa newspaper devoted the entire front page of its Sunday edition to an anti-bullying editorial after a gay teen committed suicide.
Relatives have said 14-year-old Kenneth Weishuhn Jr. suffered intense harassment, including threatening cellphone calls and nasty comments posted online, after coming out to family and friends about a month ago. He died April 15 from what the local sheriff's office described only as a "self-inflicted injury."
The Sioux City Journal's front-page opinion piece calls on the community to be pro-active in stopping bullying and urges members to learn more about the problem by seeing the acclaimed new film, "Bully," which documents the harassment of a Sioux City middle school student. It notes that while many students are targeted for being gay, "we have learned a bully needs no reason to strike."
"In Kenneth's case, the warnings were everywhere," the editorial said. "We saw it happen in other communities, now it has hit home. Undoubtedly, it wasn't the first life lost to bullying here, but we can strive to make it the last.
Editor Mitch Pugh said the newspaper has run front-page editorials before but has never devoted the entire page to one.
"A lot of newspapers shy away from putting editorials on the front page, but we feel we have to be a strong advocate for our community," he said. "And if we don't do that, we're not sure who else is."
Weishuhn's mother, Jeannie Chambers, told the Journal last week that she and the rest of the family knew he was being harassed but didn't realize the extent of the bullying. His sister told a local television station that Weishuhn, a freshman, had many friends and was popular at South O'Brien High School in Paullina until he came out. Then students turned on him.
Weishuhn's family couldn't immediately be reached Sunday by The Associated Press.
Pugh said the newspaper didn't consult the family before printing the editorial.
"This was a bigger issue than one person," he said.
Andy Marra, a spokesman for the national anti-bullying group GLSEN, said the Journal's decision makes "complete sense."
"Public education is absolutely vital to addressing bullying and harassment in schools," he said, adding that community pressure could push schools to do more.
