Breathe From Your Belly

It's a crucial part of living, but so simple a mechanism that it's often ignored. Breathing gives our body the oxygen it needs. But there are also some fantastic psychological benefits to breathing. Without enough oxygen, you become lethargic, tired and depressed. However, taking full, deep breaths can heighten your energy and focus. When you increase your oxygen levels, you not only increase your energy level, but also dramatically improve your mood. Plain and simple, you just feel better!

The secret behind effective breathing is learning how to breathe from your belly. You will love how it makes you feel. The key to belly breathing is to use your diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle located under your lungs. When you breathe in, you will notice that your belly wants to expand. Retract your belly as you exhale and move the used oxygen out of your lungs.

Do your belly-breathing exercises several times a day, especially when you feel worn out. Try to sneak in belly breaths whenever possible - during your morning commute, at your desk at work, or while you're relaxing on the couch.

  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Further, Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - Take Action:

  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

The shooting of Trayvon Martin is a national tragedy that has left many Americans surprised and dismayed. For students of gay rights in the United States, the emerging facts of the case, and particularly how police appear to have handled it, are eerily familiar.

For the better part of the last hundred years, killing people because they are gay has been an acceptable practice in many parts of the country and the world. All too often, perpetrators get away with anti-gay violence because the police have failed to investigate, lawyers have failed to prosecute, or juries have pardoned the perpetrators. From high-profile cases like Harvey Milk's to hundreds of lesser-known incidents, a pattern of violence against sexual minorities met with official disinterest and inertia is all too common.

The most common tactic to avoid guilt in anti-gay violence is called the "gay panic" defense. In this strategy, killers assert that they were hit on by a gay person, felt threatened, and retaliated with violence. Often, the legal system's response to such incidents is to simply assert that the dead "had it coming" or shouldn't have incited the violence in the first place, by keeping their interest to themselves.

The gay panic defense is often invoked by the police, reducing the veracity of their investigation. This was a prominent feature in the murder case of Brandon Teena (dramatized in the movie Boys Don't Cry). The police force in that case eventually lost a civil suit for failing to protect Brandon and act appropriately in response to her attackers. Sometimes, it's the prosecutors who support gay panic, as in the case of Matthew Shepard, where prosecutors asserted for some time that Matthew's drug use was the reason he was brutally beaten, tied to a fence, and left for dead, despite evidence to the contrary. In that case, the killers directly used a gay panic defense in court, subtly aided by the prosecution's ennui.

In this regard, Florida's self-defense act merely codifies for racial minorities something that sexual minorities have long believed: that if you get assaulted, gay-bashed, or even murdered, the authorities are unlikely to make an effort to seek justice on your behalf. Few gay people I know are more than one degree away from a gay-bashing, and in almost every case, police fail to make a significant effort to find, and prosecutors to imprison, the criminals. This leads to a cycle of cynicism and fear that not only injures the victim again but undermines our civil society.

The Trayvon case is a tragic story. This young man appears to have been killed just for being who he was, like so many before him. His blackness was no more viscerally threatening than Matthew Shepard's simple request for a ride home, or Brandon Teena's desire to be loved. And we must expect our justice system to respond with the same righteous indignation that the laws they are sworn to uphold insist upon. No one -- black, gay, transgender, short, fat, old, stupid, or loud -- should live in fear for simply being who he or she is. And we all have a right to expect that our police and prosecutors will pursue criminals without being blinded by their own ignorance.

Crazy people are an unfortunate fact of life that we must accept. But police departments, courts, and communities that don't stand against senseless murder of innocents are not similarly considered. Today, gay people, black people and everyone who believes in equality should be united in the desire to seek justice for the countless victims who were, and continue to be, "less than" under the protection of the law.
