Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
An Expert's Alternatives to Treat Depression

By Gina Roberts-Grey /  April 24, 2012

Your lifestyle can affect emotions, making you feel happy or blue, according to recent research. Duke University professor Stephen Ilardi, Ph.D., tells us how various activities affect your brain and recommends natural remedies to treat depression. Read on for the mood-boosting solutions, from sunlight to sardines...

You're on the go from sun-up to the wee hours of the night, getting the family out the door, working 10-hour days, then flopping in front of the TV with a microwaveable frozen meal before collapsing into bed. It's the typical American life, and, unfortunately, it could be hurting your brain health and triggering depression, according to Stephen Ilardi, Ph.D., an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Duke University who has spent nearly a decade researching depression treatments.

"There's overwhelming evidence that the way we live changes the brain and can contribute to symptoms of depression," says Ilardi, author of The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs (Da Capo Lifelong Books).

Diet, exercise and even the weather can trigger or exaggerate depression, he says. But by dealing with these factors, you can prevent or ease it.

Read on to learn what natural remedies might help you – or a loved one – manage symptoms of depression. Why is it important to treat depression?
Depression is an illness that has profound effects on the functioning of the brain and immune system. It affects a person's ability to focus and concentrate, impairs memory and, because it stimulates the desire to withdraw, compromises a person's ability to socialize.

Left untreated, depression can produce brain damage. A depressed brain is in a constant state of overdrive with respect to its defense mechanism. Your "fight-or-flight" response is designed to be temporary. But in a depressed brain, fight-or-flight is always on, putting it in a continual state of heightened alert.

And when the fight-or-flight response won't shut down, the brain reacts as if this condition is an illness. That causes lethargy, loss of focus, the desire to withdraw, etc., and eventually areas in the brain lose the natural ability to repair themselves.

So a person with untreated depression begins to lose millions of brain cells due to damage.

In your opinion, are doctors knowledgeable about alternative ways to treat depression?
In the U.S., most doctors are aware of only two options to treat depression – antidepressants and traditional psychotherapy. How does exercise benefit a person with depression?
For most adults, exercise is remarkably effective. Why isn't well known, but there are short- and long-term benefits.

Vigorous exercise increases activity in several key circuits of the brain, specifically in the arousal-based circuits that use the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine. And since depression is partially the result of a reduction in dopamine-based activity in the brain, stimulating those areas helps to naturally correct brain chemicals.

Exercise also has a mood-elevating effect. You literally feel good, and get an immediate boost in mood when you exercise. It increases long-term dopamine signaling in the brain as well.

What type of exercise do you recommend for people with depression?
Aerobic. Anything that gets your heart rate up, like brisk walking, running, biking, etc., is wonderful.

If you do choose to walk, you can't just stroll.

To treat depression, you need to walk briskly while swinging your arms. Imagine walking at a fast pace as though you're late for a plane. You don't have to run, but that sense of urgency needs to be present in your step to get your heart rate up in an aerobic range. How much exercise is needed and how often?
The best studies say 30 minutes, three times a week, is as effective as taking antidepressants like Zoloft.

How soon after incorporating an exercise routine will people with depression start to notice benefits?
To begin to realize long-term benefits, you need to exercise regularly for a few weeks.

Depending on the person, that's when they start to realize short-term improvement in symptoms and feel some elevation of baseline mood.

Besides exercise, what are some other natural ways to treat depression?
Diet is another option that has very profound results. Incorporating the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids is very helpful.

How does that help people with depression?
The brain needs omega-3 to protect itself.

Both omega-3 and omega-6 [oils] have critical functions in the body and brain. Omega-6 is a key building block for inflammatory hormones, and omega-3 acids are the building blocks for anti-inflammatory hormones. If balance tilts toward omega-6, as in the American diet, you wind up with an increase in heart disease, arthritis, allergies and clinical depression, because the body is in a heightened state of inflammation due to the overproduction of inflammatory hormones.

Depression is a disease of lifestyle, because it's an inflammatory illness. A depressed brain is an inflamed brain.

The average American consumes 16 times as much omega-6 as omega-3 and that has dire consequences for brain – and overall health.

There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids. Which one is best to treat depression?
One is ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which you get from flaxseeds and nuts. That type isn't used by the brain, so it doesn't have antidepressant ability.

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is the type of omega-3 that helps treat depression. It's powerful as a natural antidepressant and has anti-inflammatory properties. EPA is present in grasses and leaves; however, since we can't digest those things, we get omega-3 by eating animals that have eaten grass and leaves. On the flip side, omega-6s are made by seeds and grains, which we also get by eating animals that are grain-fed.

How much omega-3 fatty acid do you need daily to treat depression?
The antidepressant effect kicks in at a daily dose of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of EPA a day.

Oily fish [like sardines or salmon] are the best food source, but you'd have to eat a lot of fish every day to get the 1,000 mg. So the best option is a supplement that specifically says it has EPA.

Does sunlight help treat depression?
Yes. Sunlight has very powerful effects.

Bright light through sunlight or an artificial light source like a light box has some of the fastest, most rapid antidepressant effects. The effect of sunlight can be felt as soon as 5-7 days, and there are both short- and long-term benefits. What's the best way to use light therapy to treat depression?
The light needs to be intense – your ordinary household bulb won't do. Light is measured in lux, and the average bright room has 200-500 lux. Natural sunlight has 10,000-200,000, depending on cloud cover.

But even a cloudy day is brighter than a bright room and has more benefits for treating depression.

That's why going outside on a bright day is the best way to use light to treat depression.

Why does sunlight help depression?
The human body and brain are designed to rest every day, and the trigger is the loss of light or evening darkness. Americans are overscheduled and "on" well into the night, working on emails and running errands, so the body clock drifts out of sync.

Too much drifting can cause brain chemicals to be out of whack, so you wind up with a depressed brain.

Sunlight also improves serotonin and dopamine production, two brain chemicals that [balance] a depressed brain. How much sunlight is needed?
It only takes 5-15 minutes of direct exposure daily.

Can you reap sunlight's depression benefits if you're wearing sunscreen?
You can get the anti-depression benefits through your retina as long as you're not wearing sunglasses. However, you won't get the vitamin D benefits of sunlight if you're using sunscreen.

What are some options if a person with depression lives in a gloomy area, or it's wintertime and there isn't much access to a lot of sunlight?
Take a vitamin D supplement, which triggers production of healthy doses of brain chemicals.

The recommended daily dose for people with depression is 2,000-4,000 IU (International Units) daily.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

President Obama Remembers Gay Holocaust Victims in Speech at Holocaust Memorial Museum: VIDEO
Towerland / Apr 24, 2012

Holocause Remembrance Day with a speech at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Gay victims of the atrocity were among those the President noted in his speech:

I say this as a President, and I say it as a father.  We must tell our children about a crime unique in human history.  The one and only Holocaust -- six million innocent people -- men, women, children, babies -- sent to their deaths just for being different, just for being Jewish.  We tell them, our children, about the millions of Poles and Catholics and Roma and gay people and so many others who also must never be forgotten.  Let us tell our children not only how they died, but also how they lived -- as fathers and mothers, and sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters who loved and hoped and dreamed, just like us.

We must tell our children about how this evil was allowed to happen -- because so many people succumbed to their darkest instincts, and because so many others stood silent.
