One Way to Deal With Death

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / Published April 04, 2012

Few things are more devastating and life-altering than the death of a loved one. Some of you are dealing with this heartbreaking event at this very moment. There's no escape from this tragic and emotionally painful part of life.

As Ben Franklin said, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes."

Taxes we deal with once a year. Fortunately, death doesn't poke its upsetting head into our lives that often. When it does, however, it can literally take your breath away and leave you angry, lost and lonely. It may be your parent, sibling, spouse, child, dear friend or beloved pet that forces you to face this unthinkable and emotionally devastating reality of life.

We all react differently to the death of a loved one, so there's no single way to handle this kind of loss. Some find solace in their faith or in other people they feel close to. Others need professional guidance to find their way through this emotional abyss, where there appears to be no signs of light.

But when we really love someone, they never truly leave us because they live on in our hearts, minds and memories.

When I was a practicing therapist, I worked with many people going through this tough situation. My favorite suggestion was to use this unfortunate and painful loss as a motivation to improve your own life.Other than simply experiencing the pain and agony, use it to move your life forward by making a heart-felt dedication to the departed loved one. Here's how:

Pick something meaningful in your life that you've been putting off doing and then rededicate yourself to getting it done in their honor. It may be finishing school, losing weight, quitting smoking, becoming a better listener, etc.

Then, have a private conversation with your loved one who has passed, and make this dedication to them and then thank them for the inspiration. Just imagine how your late loved one would feel to know that they've inspired you to better yourself in some wonderful and meaningful way. This might put a bit of positive and healthy spin on a very dark and sad situation.

This also works well for those of you who have lost pets. For a lot of people, their pet is like a child, and the pain of losing a pet can be just as devastating as losing a human family member.

I wrote a short poem for a dear friend of mine a while back who was experiencing the first anniversary of the death of her dog, Peanut. She was amazed at how overwhelmed she was on the one-year anniversary of his passing, so I wrote her the following poem in hopes of consoling her. I called it "Ode to Peanut."

Heartbeats come, then heartbeats go, as their spirits are sorely missed
A part of your day, the whole of your life of which your time was kissed
Another anniversary another heartfelt wince, as memories you log
Into your deepest loving thoughts the image of your dog!At the end of the day, we all have to find our own way through this dreadful and difficult experience. I believe that channeling all that negative emotion into creating positive action will help ease the pain. It will also produce a powerful new kind of meaning and purpose in your life.

Let me leave you with a short Irish quote: "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal."

The truth is that even the death of a loved one can make you a better and happier person if you face it squarely and use it wisely. There is life after death, but the kind of life that you create depends on the choices you make and actions you take.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

Gays come out for justice for Trayvon Martin
By Jonathan Capehart / 04/05/2012 / Washington Post

You know about the complaint many African Americans have about gay men and lesbians equating -- in any way -- their shared struggle for equal rights with the civil rights movement. Well, going hand-in-hand with that is an annoyance with the seeming one-way nature of the gay appropriation. In other words, the gays want everyone to understand their plight, but they do nothing to lend their voice and support when the blacks could use it.

That changed with the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman.

On Monday, 23 groups representing the varied concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people issued an open letter in support of Trayvon's family and their quest for justice.
The tragic killing of Trayvon Martin is a national call to action. Our hearts go out to Trayvon's family and friends for the loss they have experienced. We stand in solidarity with them as they demand answers and justice. We represent organizations with diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender constituencies.

Many in our community have been targets of bigotry and bias. We have a great deal of experience grappling with the role bias plays in violent crimes against our communities. We well know the stories of young people targeted for violence just because of who they are: Rashawn Brazell, Lawrence King, Ali Forney, Deoni Jones, Brandon White, Matthew Shepard, Angie Zapata, Sean Kennedy and countless others.

Trayvon's killing is a wakeup call to the enduring cancer of racism and racial profiling. The pain his family continues to endure transcends communities and unites us all. Every person, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, must be able to walk the streets without fear for their safety.

Trayvon's killing is tragic and the stark reality that racial bias played a role in his death has alarmed our nation. Questions must be asked. Answers must be sought. And justice must be served. We join our voices to the chorus of so many others to demand that local and federal authorities find those answers. We stand in solidarity with Trayvon's family and friends as they seek justice for his killing. In the timeless words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
The letter was signed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Black Justice Coalition, Lambda Legal, Immigration Equality, Freedom to Marry, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) and the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, to name a few. It marks an important moment in a necessary alliance that needs more tending.

Folks who feel under siege are always mindful of who their allies are, who is standing with them publicly when they need the support the most. That some of the premiere LGBT organizations in the country have stepped forward on an issue of great importance to African Americans should be applauded -- and should not go unnoticed.

Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
