How to Cope With a Health Diagnosis

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / April 11, 2012

It happens to people every day in doctor offices and medical facilities everywhere. You go in to see your doctor for your yearly physical or because you're not feeling well and have a battery of tests performed.

Afterward, you find yourself sitting with your doctor to discuss the results. Then it happens! Out of nowhere, your doctor tells you that you have a life-altering health issue or terminal illness, as you sit frozen with fear in devastated disbelief!

Having gone through this very issue years ago with my late wife, I know the devastating reality of this unthinkable situation all too well.

There's no one perfect formula for coping with receiving this type of emotional information. Since we're all so different, we tend to have our own idiosyncratic way of dealing with these kinds of extremely upsetting and disturbing situations.

I've created my own short recommendation for coping with these types of highly sensitive situations. I've developed four general guidelines that I think encompass the essence of the work that must be done to fight back against the anxiety and depression that often follows a diagnosis of this type. I created an acronym for them called L.I.F.E.
L…..Learn as much as you can about your condition so you are a knowledgeable and contributing partner in your treatment plan.

I…..Invest your time and energy in things and people that you deem important, bring you pleasure, raise your spirit and help you appreciate your life.

F…..Focus on what's really important in life by staying positive and full of hope.

E…..Exercise your mind and body to whatever degree is possible because that will boost your spirit, keep you busy and make you a stronger soldier in your fight for health.
With that said, there's one thing I believe is critical to coping with a serious health issue: hope!
It's an incredibly powerful weapon that creates a line of defense between you and the depths of depression that a life-altering diagnosis can create. As I have suggested in my LIFE formula, learning about your condition, investing your time wisely, focusing on the positive, and exercising will make you a wiser and stronger partner for your doctor.

It's hope that moves you to take those actions in the first place. Hope, in my opinion, is the driving force behind motivation.

I read an interesting quote about hope years ago by Ellen Stovall of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship:

"With communication, comes understanding and clarity; With understanding, fear diminishes; In the absence of fear, hope emerges; And in the presence of hope, anything is possible."

I still find myself moved by that quote. Hope helps you to deal with fear, encourages you to take your medication, allows you to endure discomfort, and moves you to think positive. A strong sense of hope is the centerpiece for any coping strategy addressing serious illness or injury.Write the word hope on a piece of paper and always carry it with you in your pocket or purse. This way you'll never be hopeless, and that one powerful word will serve as a constant reminder of your fighting spirit and your desire for a better life.

We will all have serious and scary health issues in our lives eventually. It's those who use these situations to become better, happier and stronger people who truly win these battles.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

Mitt Romney Endorsed By Anti-Gay Group, Backed By Its Leaders
Huffington Post / Apr 11, 2012 / Lila Shapiro

On Wednesday morning, the National Organization for Marriage endorsed Mitt Romney, suggesting a possible renewal of ties between the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and the organization, the nation's leading group fighting same-sex marriage.

In 2008, when Romney was also a presidential candiate, his political action committee made a $10,000 donation to the National Organization of Marriage.

Earlier this week, the Human Rights Campaign disclosed that two board members of the National Organization for Marriage, Craig D. Cardon and Broc Hiatt, each donated $2,500 to the 2012 Romney campaign. The two also personally donated to the Romney campaign in 2008. NOM is a social welfare nonprofit and cannot give directly to candidates.

In its press release on Wednesday, the National Organization for Marriage described President Barack Obama as "an incumbent who has done virtually everything in his power to undermine the institution of marriage."

Wednesday's endorsement comes slightly more than two weeks after a series of explosive internal documents, which surfaced as a result of a Maine lawsuit, revealed NOM's plans to defeat marriage equality campaigns by "fanning the hostility" between blacks and gays. These memos also described a plan to "expose Obama as a social radical."

The National Organization for Marriage had filed the lawsuit in an effort to overturn a Maine law compelling it to disclose many of its financial backers. The group's nonprofit status has allowed it to conceal its donors, which has drawn fierce criticism.

After a federal judge in Maine unsealed NOM's internal documents, numerous entities, including The New York Times editorial page, called on the Republican presidential candidates to renounce the group. But none of the candidates have done so.

Last year Mitt Romney, along with candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, signed the group's marriage pledge to work aggressively against marriage equality should they reach the White House.

The Romney campaign has not returned multiple requests for comment.

President Obama has indicated that his views on marriage are "evolving," and his administration has opposed anti-same-sex marriage initiatives in several states, including Minnesota earlier this week.

"We hope our endorsement will help focus social conservatives on the need to defeat President Obama," said Brian Brown, NOM's president, declared in Wednesday's press release.

The Human Rights Campaign, the organization that released NOM's internal documents to the public, issued a statement on Wednesday blasting Romney. "One of the most hate-filled groups in American politics is embracing Governor Romney today," said Human Rights Campaign's president, Joe Solmonese. "NOM has said unconscionable things about LGBT people and staunchly opposes any sort of relationship recognition for committed, loving LGBT couples -- not to mention the group's race-baiting."

The National Organization for Marriage did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Its endorsement came the same morning that the group's website and social media outlets were hacked. The hacker's note referred in jest to the internal memos and strategies to "divide Americans."

In 2002 when Romney ran for the Massachusetts governor's seat, he opposed same-sex marriage but supported domestic partnership benefits for same-sex couples and was against an amendment that would have outlawed all domestic partnership benefits for gay couples in the Bay State.

"All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual orientation," his campaign page stated at the time.
