Starting Over After a House or Job Loss

With few exceptions, most of us are in a different place today than we were before the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008! Savings accounts have been substantially depleted, millions of homes have been lost to foreclosure, the term "job security" has become an oxymoron, and the things we once thought we could depend on are no longer a certainty.

Some of you lost your home because you bought a house you couldn't afford, and reality finally caught up with you. Others of you bought a home with a mortgage you could afford, only to lose your job, which eventually put you so far behind in payments that you simply couldn't catch up. And, to make matters worse, experts expect this mortgage crisis to continue in 2012.

If you lost your home or are in the process of losing it, please consider this: As painful as this experience can be, a house is merely a physical structure with walls constructed of wood, nails and other building materials.

A home is different from a house. It's defined not by its physical structure but by two of its most valuable contents - the people who inhabit it and the love that fills it. Separating yourself from the emotional attachment that you have to a building will both ease your pain and help you to move forward.

With the real unemployment rate somewhere in double digits, this will continue to create problems for people in 2012.

For someone with a good work ethic and who is used to going to work every day, spending days at home unemployed is a tough row to hoe. While it will certainly affect your pocketbook, it will also drain your spirit and slowly chip away at your self-esteem.Work is an important part of our health: It acts a powerful psychological wellness inoculation. For that reason and others, if you're currently unemployed, don't get too comfortable with unemployment compensation – it's not healthy for your well-being.

With both homes and jobs being lost at break-neck speeds, many people are being forced to start over again. If you're in either of these two groups, today is the perfect day to start over and embark on a renewed and fresh start.

As I see it, there are three categories of issues that confront those of you who have lost homes, jobs or both:
•There are those things that you can do immediately

•There are those things that you can't do instantly, but can chip away at

•There are those things that you simply can't change or do anything about
The things that you can do immediately should be done today. For example, if you're falling behind on your mortgage, call your lender to talk about a solution instead of waiting for a miracle to save you.

Next, create a plan of attack to address those things that you can chip away at. For example, if you're currently employed but suspect you could lose your job, start updating your resume and looking for a new job now instead of waiting until you're unemployed, panicked and desperate.Finally, don't waste time on things that can't be changed. For example, if you've lost your house, don't beat yourself up about it. Accept the reality of the situation and create a new home to live in that's full of love somewhere else.

As the Serenity Prayer so accurately states:

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference

When job loss, home foreclosure or some other life-altering event suddenly shows up on your doorstep, you have two basic courses of action: You can wallow in the emotional turmoil of the moment, become frozen with fear and point fingers of blame OR you can pick yourself up, create a plan of action and start over!
Take Action:
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Further, Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - Take Action:
    political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
    Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! President Obama Voices Opposition to Minnesota Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

Though he does not officially support gay marriage, President Obama voiced opposition to a proposed anti-gay marriage ballot measure in Minnesota today.

Obama for America Minnesota Communications Director Kristin Sosanie said:

"While the President does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples."

"That's what the Minnesota ballot initiative would do - single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples - and the President does not support it."

The proposed Minnesota marriage amendment reads simply, "Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota."

It's the second time in as many months Obama has weighed in on the issue.

The Obama campaign in North Carolina issued a statement in March with the same language in opposition to Amendment One, which would also define marriage in the state's constitution as between one man and one woman.

Just as in North Carolina, same-sex marriage is already banned by a statute in Minnesota. Unlike the North Carolina amendment, the Minnesota amendment does not mention civil unions or domestic partnerships.
 
Today's news comes after White House press secretary Jay Carney stated that First Lady Michelle Obama - in referencing how Supreme Court decisions will impact whether people can "love whomever we choose" - was not commenting about marriage equality.

Her husband, though "evolving" in his views on marriage equality, technically opposed marriage equality and supported civil unions in his 2008 campaign.
