    Make Those Reps Count
     
    Picking the appropriate weight for an exercise can be an intimidating task, but it's also an important one. If you choose a dumbbell or barbell that's too light, you'll have to do a lot of repetitions to effectively work your muscles. If you pick one that's too heavy, you might strain a muscle or tendon or sprain a ligament. But pick just the right weight, and you'll be able to fatigue your muscle with fewer reps. But how can you know which weight is right for which exercise?

    Here`s the test: If your goal is to build muscular endurance, you should be doing 10-12 repetitions of an exercise. If you can lift the weight for more than 10-12 reps, it's not heavy enough. And if you can only complete fewer than 10 reps, then guess what? The weight is too heavy! It's a very simple formula, but one that's essential to follow in order to maximize the effect of every single rep.

    Outed MP David Campbell not alone - one in five men gay

    DAVID Campbell is not alone. One in five of Australia's politicians, businessmen, union leaders, labourers, farmers - men in general are either openly gay or leading secret double lives, Sydney anthropologist Stephen Juan claims.

    When the retired Supreme Court judge David Yeldham gassed himself in his car 14 years ago after it was revealed he had lived a furtive life seeking sexual gratification in public toilets, it was put down to a generational shame.

    Yeldham, then 67, married with grown-up children, had lived the Latin motto of his old school, the prestigious Knox Grammar: Virile Agitur, meaning "do the manly thing".

    But Dr Juan said little had changed. Society still expected men to be men. "The passing of generations have nothing to do with it," he said.

    "There is still a negative sanction from society against a man coming out and declaring he is gay regardless of which generation he is from."

    It was the father of modern sex research, Alfred Kinsey, who was the first to say about 10 per cent of men were either gay or bisexual, Dr Juan said.

    But many studies since then put the figure at 20 per cent. He said Campbell would have had to choose between politics and his homosexuality because he would never have been elected to Parliament in a macho working class seat like Keira had he declared himself gay. Inner Sydney yes, Wollongong no.

    "He was in a double bind and he had no choice," Dr Juan said.

    "He either had to give up his political career before it started or live a lie.

    "To admit you are homosexual is a confession that you are in fact a member of the opposite sex in everything except physicality, so there is a loss of status in the male community."

    For every man like Australia's first openly gay judge, the former High Court judge Justice Michael Kirby, or gay politicians like NSW Upper House MP Paul O'Grady or Senator Bob Brown, there are more men like David Campbell.

    The state's longest serving treasurer Michael Egan, now chancellor of Macquarie University, never hid his homosexuality - but nor did he flaunt it.

    Ian Roberts, among the toughest men to ever lace on a pair of rugby league boots, came out as gay publicly in 1995 but Jason Akermanis this week showed how 15 years had made no difference. Brownlow medal-winner Akermanis encouraged gay players to bite their tongues and stay in the closet.

    In NSW, sex between consenting adult men in private was punishable until 1984 by up to 14 years in jail.
