Regarding the article regarding same-sex marriage in Iowa:
If you marry in Iowa, isn't the marriage only recognized in that state?
I mean if a same-sex couple from Missouri goes to Iowa to get married, their
marriage is not recognized in the state of Missouri, so what is the point?
Or am I missing something ....
Moderator: The point is that you can! It is a way of enforcing your rights. Some places do recognize out of state marriage, some do not. But, even if you live in a state that does not recognize same gender marriage, it will not stop me from placing "married" on bank documents, drivers license, etc... If they don't like it, let them take me to court. If i have a marriage certificate, than as far as i am concerned, it is real and still real in the state i got married. And it is real to me. In fact, laws stating it is not real may not be legal. Try getting divorced? They found that it is legal as they have no way of divorcing you. Eventually it shall go to the US Supreme Court. Get married now. Enforce your rights! We have force in numbers. Years later it may be recognized and you may be able to count the years. But, i can start counting the years immediately. You are missing the point of enforcing your own rights. Watch a out of state couple get married and you will watch them cry. It is more real than you can imagine. And in the state you got married, it is law. No one can tell me it is isn't. If they have not beaten you in court, than it is real. Take that marriage certicate to a hospital with you if your spouse is in teh ER, etc. Let them try to stop me! They won't have a chance. .....jake

Well, that changed for those employees when Exxon purchased Mobil - as same gender-partner benefits went out the door! Therefore, as we have choices, we don't need Exxon.
c.. Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck on Fox News as well as all of FOX NEWS! Glenn has lied about Health-care, called our President a racist, and is anti-gay rights.
d.. We demand Health Reform to include affordable insurance for anyone with pre-existing illness. 45,000 Americans die each yr because they have no health insurance! Further, we must include non-Discriminatory legislation towards the LGBT community in this bill. The present senate version excludes this.
e.. Call the White House and let them know you are angry about the situation in UGANDA. Uganda legislation calls for the Death Penalty for Gay People and mandatory Jail Sentence for anyone who does not report someone they know who is Gay! This is Genocide! Some May Be Genetically Prone to Type 2 Diabetes
Lifestyle plays an important and undeniable role in a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but one study indicates that it may not be the only factor at work.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from Harvard Medical School identified a gene variation that can raise type 2 diabetes risk by as much as 80%. Researchers gathered data from more than 3,500 subjects, finding that those patients with a notable variation in a gene identified as TCF7L2 were almost twice as likely to have type 2 diabetes than their peers.
A previous Harvard study found an association between type 2 diabetes risk and another genetic variant, classified as ARNT. However, researchers in this study noted that healthy diet and a regular fitness program could help high-risk adults reduce their genetic diabetes risk.

Most gay couples getting married in Iowa are from other states

A report from the Iowa Department of Public Health shows nearly 60% of the same sex couples married in Iowa over the last year were from out of state. An Iowa Supreme Court ruling in April of 2009 made Iowa the first state in the Midwest to legalize gay marriage.
Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, says he's not surprised by the numbers. "Since the ruling occurred in April of 2009, we were immediately flooded for the first month with phone calls from around the country, wanting to get the particulars as it relates to being married in Iowa," Schamberger said.
Groups from other states have brought busloads of same-sex couples to Iowa City to be married, according to Schamberger. He says his staff has worked with local hotels and other businesses that provide wedding services.
Chris Diebel runs a website to help same-sex couples find caterers and other wedding-related vendors. He's also not surprised with the number of couples coming to Iowa to wed. "There's the ease of travel and the ease on the wallet of doing that in Iowa," Diebel said. "Certainly planning a wedding in the Midwest, regardless of your sexuality, is going to be cheaper in a city like Des Moines or a state like Iowa than it would be in a major metropolitan area."
Overall, 2,020 same-sex marriages were recorded in Iowa between April 2009 and March 2010. Only 815 of the couples were from Iowa. Most of the gay couples from out-of-state came from Illinois (199), Missouri (158) and Nebraska (111).
"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
