Researchers Assess Gay Youths' Mental Health
 
One-third have attempted suicide, but most have no signs of mental disorder
 

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 8 (HealthDay News) -- One third of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adolescents have attempted suicide in their lifetime, but most of them are mentally strong, new U.S. research suggests.

A team at the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted psychiatric interviews with 246 ethnically diverse LGBT youth, aged 16-20, to assess them for major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), conduct disorder and suicide attempts.

About 70 percent of the youth met no criteria for any mental disorders, but 15 percent met criteria for major depression and nearly 10 percent met criteria for PTSD. The study found that one-third of the youths had made a suicide attempt at some point in their life, and 6 percent had made a suicide attempt in the last year.

The prevalence of mental disorders among LGBT youth was higher than that in the general population, but comparable to that of urban and minority youth, the researchers noted.

"One of the most important findings from our work is that most of these [LGBT] youth are doing very well and are not experiencing mental health problems," study author Dr. Brian Mustanski, an assistant professor of psychiatry, said in a UIC news release.

"The big question is, are these youth more likely to have mental disorders relative to other kids? And the answer to that is that it really depends on who you're comparing them to," he added.

The study appears online and in the December print issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

Man finishes trek to Marine base

TWENTYNINE PALMS - A gay man pushing to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" and the head of the military branch whose members are most opposed to the change both arrived Monday at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.
 

Richard Noble, who marched 56 miles from Palm Springs, was not allowed on the base, but he and retired Marine Cpl. Evelyn Thomas - who is also fighting the policy - met with several Marines.

"It was great," Noble said. "A Marine came out and gave me his hat. When Evelyn Thomas came out, we ceremoniously folded up the flag that I carried, the ceremonial American flag. Since she's a former Marine, she's going to take the flag to give to him as a thank-you."

Noble also advocated for a center on base that would parallel gay-straight alliance clubs at high schools.

Capt. Nick Mannweiler, the public-affairs officer for the base, said that would be unrealistic.

"I think Mr. Noble doesn't really understand how the Marine Corps works," Mannweiler said. "You don't just start clubs It's not like it's a community group."

The Marine Corps was most resistant to repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, according to a Pentagon study that found most military members would not mind the change.

Gen. James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, did not meet directly with Noble.

"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."

URGENT:  Boycott Gold's Gym, Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's was the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Gold's Gym, Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
