Today's Health - Wellness / Exercise / Reflections:Walgreens Contribution Helps Exceed Lifeline Appeal GoalSunday, 26 December 2010 / eNews Park ForestMore than $650,000 raised in 50 days, thanks to community support
Chicago, IL(ENEWSPF)Walgreens contribution of $25,000 to the Howard Brown Health Center's Lifeline Appeal campaign brings the campaign's total donations to more than $650,000 and ensures the center will remain open.
"We are extremely grateful to Walgreens for its generosity and support. They helped make possible what seemed impossible when we announced the Lifeline Appeal 50 days ago yet it happened because of this kind of support from the community," said Jamal M. Edwards, President and CEO of Howard Brown Health Center.
For more than 20 years, Walgreens has supported and worked with Howard Brown Health Center to promote health and wellness in the LGBTQA community.
"We are glad we could help Howard Brown Health Center successfully close its ambitious Lifeline Appeal campaign," said Glen Pietrandoni, Walgreens Pharmacy Services Manager. "We look forward to continuing to support Howard Brown as it revitalizes itself to address the health care needs of our shared community."
Howard Brown Health Center and Walgreens have collaborated in several ways to meet the health care needs of the LGBTQA community. For example, Walgreens manages Howard Brown's 340B pharmacy program, which allows Howard Brown to provide substantially discounted prescription drugs to patients who otherwise may not be able to afford their medications. Also, this program generates significant cost savings that Howard Brown can then use to support and expand its clinical services.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, Walgreens will expand its participation in Howard Brown's 340B program beyond the Sheridan Road clinic to include Walgreens locations at Clark & Barry and Broadway & Ridge.
This will enable Howard Brown and Walgreens to also serve Howard Brown patients at the TRIAD Health Practice, which Howard Brown operates in the Illinois Masonic Professional building at 3000 N. Halsted.
Any new or existing insured patient can help support the mission of Howard Brown Health Center, simply by accessing medical or behavioral health care at its TRIAD Health Practice (773-294-8400) and having the prescriptions from Howard Brown's providers filled at any of the three conveniently located Walgreens stores that participate in Howard Brown's 340B program. Howard Brown is currently accepting new insured patients at TRIAD Health Practice, and appointments are available quickly.
Walgreens will also soon begin an in-store donation program for Howard Brown at select north side stores. Customers will have the opportunity to support Howard Brown Health Center by purchasing a $1, $5 or $10 Lifeline Appeal Heart, with all proceeds going to Howard Brown Health Center. Each customer will be able to sign their Lifeline Appeal Heart, which will be posted in the store.
"This is an extraordinary partnership that continues to improve services and the care for our community," said Edwards.
The Lifeline Appeal funds help support Howard Brown program and services to more than 36,000 people annually.

Take Action:
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck on Fox News as well as all of FOX NEWS! Glenn has lied about Health-care, called our President a racist, and is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to get be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Further, Bill said that McDonalds would never show a gay friendly commercial in the USA. Imagine, Bill is comparing Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of senile - Sen. John McCain: because of their Hateful anti-Immigration Law that encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform. Further, Their Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and blocked Immigration reform! We shall hold the voters of Arizona responsible!
- NEW: Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). It prevents Fed'l employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. It prevents married gay couples from gaining Fed'l Benifits.
- We need ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). We do not want to be fired from our job because we are GAY!
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "Do not donate to them."
- Boycott Gold's Gym for donating loads of money to anti-gay candidates. Say "NO" to Golds.

By Carlos Santoscoy / December 27, 2010 / On Top MagazineSome of the leading candidates vying to replace Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele oppose gay marriage.
The candidates discussed their views on the subject with National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Chairwoman Maggie Gallagher.
NOM is the nation's most vociferous opponent of gay marriage. The group backed successful efforts to repeal gay marriage in California and Maine. Its next targets appear to be New Hampshire and Iowa, where Republican lawmakers increased their numbers on November 2.
Gallagher discussed the issue with several leading candidates, including Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus, Save American Jobs Project Chairman Saul Anuzis, former RNC political director Gentry Collins and former Missouri Republican Chairwoman Ann Wagner.
The four candidates were interviewed via Skype and their responses were posted on the NOM website.
Collins said gay marriage "devalues the relationship that is shared by my wife and I and a number of committed married couples."
Marriage, Anuzis said, was an American institution essential to society.
"Marriage is an institution that has been around for 3,000 years. It's part of our faith. It's part of out culture," Anuzis said. "It's important to have a mother and a father People care that you're a family person."
Opposition to gay marriage is a "pillar" of the Republican platform, Wagner said in her interview.
"I think that's where the American people are. They believe in traditional marriage. They want to lift that up. It's important that we hold true to those tenants and values that I think are a pillar of our Republican party and our platform."
Priebus said marriage was given to us by God and needs to be protected from "activist judges."
"I believe marriage is a gift from God and the sanctity of marriage ought to be protected and I don't believe the comedy clause in the constitution allows for activist judges to redefine what marriage is," he said, referring to the constitution's Full Faith and Credit clause. (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
The RNC will elect a new chairman next month. Its current chairman, Michael Steele, is looking to keep his job. Steele has previously said that he opposes gay marriage because it hurts small business.
