Today December 1st is World Aids Day, a day to reflect and take action - in your communities, on the web, and through personal responsibility - to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.
There are over a million people living with HIV in the U.S and, according to the U.S. government site aids.org, one in five people are unaware they carry the virus. Worldwide, it is estimated that over 33 million people are infected with HIV. Black and Latino communities in the U.S. are particularly in danger, as they are seeing exponential growth of HIV cases.
Earlier in the year, My Latino Voice published an article regarding the HIV/AIDS crisis in the NY Latino Community. According to the latest report published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in October 2010: - Hispanics represent approximately 16 percent of the U.S. population and the latest CDC estimates show that they account for an estimated 18 percent of people living with HIV in the U.S. (194,000 persons), and an estimated 17 percent of new infections each year (9,700 infections.
- Approximately one in 36 Hispanic men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime, as will one in 106 Hispanic women.
- Men account for three-quarters (76 percent) of new infections among Hispanics. Women account for 24 percent.
- The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic men is more than double that among white men, with gay and bisexual men particularly affected.
- Most new infections among Hispanic men (72 percent) occur among men who have sex with men (MSM).
- In a study of 21 major U.S. cities in 2008, approximately 18 percent of Hispanic MSM were infected. Among those who were HIV-infected, nearly half (46 percent) were unaware that they were infected.
- The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic women is nearly four times that of white women.
- AIDS continues to claim the lives of too many Latino men and women. Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 85,000 Hispanics with AIDS have died.
