Cut Lean Abs With Scissor Kicks

Your ab muscles haven't been worked all season, despite your resolution to build a sexy six-pack. No need to hang your head in shame: TV-watching and binge eating seduces even the most motivated fitness buffs. But today it's time to renew your promise to trim that sagging torso. Let's re-start your game plan with these easy, fast-moving scissor kicks:

Step 1: Lie on your back with your legs extended. Place your hands flat on the ground with palms down, wedging them under your butt slightly to create leverage.

Step 2: Raise your feet about a foot off the ground. Kick your feet back and forth from side-to-side, imitating the movement of scissors. Focus on your lower abdominal region as you complete 12-15 reps. (Be sure to breathe steadily throughout the workout.)

Step 3: Rest for 15-30 seconds.

Step 4: Repeat the set three times.

Duo continues to bend genres with 'Phillip Morris'
Boston Globe / By Saul Austerlitz / December 12, 2010

The latest film from the writing-directing team of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa finds Jim Carrey playing a gay con man who falls in love while in prison.

You can practically hear the cash registers clanging rhythmically all across Hollywood: a raucous new film starring Jim Carrey as an unrepentant con man dodging the law in the name of love. And yet, when the film, "I Love You Phillip Morris," premiered at Sundance in 2009 to positive reviews, the studio response was tepid at best. "I think if you've got a Jim Carrey comedy that's got good reviews, and it's incredibly cheap, you got him for nothing," says the film's co-writer and co-director Glenn Ficarra. "Why wouldn't they buy that movie? They had to be terrified of the subject matter."

Ah yes, the subject matter. For "Phillip Morris," which opened in the Boston area on Friday, is a gay love story, with Ewan McGregor costarring as the object of Carrey's affections. And the occasional shadowed kiss notwithstanding, it's surprisingly explicit in its same-sex physicality. All of which would be well and good -- Hollywood famously prides itself these days on its tolerance -- if it weren't for that pesky other thing: The film is a comedy, too. "I think if it was a gay message movie they would have jumped all over it," says co-writer and co-director John Requa. "But because we were so matter of fact about the gayness, it didn't really fit any kind of set label."

Ficarra and Requa have specialized in films that don't conform to preconceived notions of style or genre. Having made their mark as the co-writers of "Bad Santa" and "Bad News Bears," two scabrous comedies of blustering antiheroes and their reluctant transformations, they were struck by the true story of convicted felon Steven Russell, whose love for a fellow inmate encouraged his most daring cons. "We were both reading this new translation of 'Don Quixote' at the time we got the book proposal," says Ficarra, "and he just struck us as a similar kind of character. A quixotic dreamer who imposes his view of the world on things." ("I'm still reading the new translation of 'Don Quixote,' " cracks Requa.)

The film, their directorial debut, not only tells Russell's story, but is infected by Russell's impish spirit -- a quirky romantic comedy about a con man that is itself a kind of con. "The dynamics of the part made us think of Jim," says Requa, "We felt like this story couldn't be told as a straight comedy, or as a straight drama. It needed to be told in a mixed tone. Jim was the first and obvious choice." Its naively American optimism is repeatedly undercut by the contrast between Carrey's exuberant voice-over and what we actually see onscreen. "Steven depended on other people's expectations, and biases, and prejudices. We're doing the same as filmmakers," says Ficarra. "We're using clichés and familiar genres and familiar setups to either direct or misdirect the audience in the way that Steven would."

Abrupt shifts in tone, from farce to romance to melodrama and back again, and sudden revelations remind us that the film we are watching is nothing if not unpredictable. "We tried to do that periodically, to remind the audience that you're being conned," says Requa. "That's what a movie does. A movie convinces an audience that what they're seeing is real. What we like to do is suspend the suspension of disbelief periodically, so the audience has a perspective on the con that's happening."

Ficarra, 44, and Requa, 41, met as undergraduates at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where they quickly realized their shared tastes. "We were in a Filmmaking 101 class, and they went around the room and asked everybody what their favorite movie was, and absolutely everybody said 'Empire Strikes Back,' besides me and Glenn, who said 'Return of the Jedi,' " Requa jokes. "I [actually] said 'Lawrence of Arabia,' and Glenn said 'A Clockwork Orange.' "

Having worked with the likes of Richard Linklater ("Bad News Bears") and Terry Zwigoff ("Bad Santa") on the films they'd written, Ficarra and Requa were well prepared for the switch to directing. "When you're a director, it's a reductive process," Requa says. "You're just making choices -- like no, I don't want that; I don't want that; that looks good. That's your entire job, all day, every day. And when you're writing, you need to express yourself. It's additive." Having finished "Phillip Morris," and the upcoming Steve Carell comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love," which they directed but did not write, Ficarra and Requa are ready to return full time to screenwriting. "We're going to take a year off, and we're just going to write, so our wives don't divorce us," says Requa. "The life of a writer is a really great job. . . . You basically work 9 to 5, or in our case, usually 10 to 4."

URGENT:  Boycott Gold's Gym, Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's was the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Gold's Gym, Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?
