Boot Camp Basics: Push-ups for Civilians

Do you think push-ups are just for military recruits? Think again! A push-up is one of the best exercises you can do for a few good reasons. First, it requires no equipment -- all you need is a flat floor (and maybe a mat to cushion your knees). Second, it's a fast-acting, calorie-burning move that flexes multiple body parts, from the pecs to abs and arm muscles. Additionally, this upper-body exercise will strengthen your frame and tighten your posture.

For the diamond push-up, you'll be enlisting your triceps -- muscles that aren't used enough in everyday movement. Make no mistake: The diamond push-up is an advanced move, so make sure you can perform a regular push-up before moving on to this military-style move. Are you ready? Let's do it:

Step 1: Lie flat on a mat or towel. Cross your ankles as you balance on your knees and extend your arms. Press your hands against the floor in a diamond formation.

Step 2: With your back straight and abs tight, breathe slowly as you lower your body through a count of 10 seconds, allowing your elbows to move outward.

Step 3: Hold for 2 seconds at the maximum tension point, about 2 inches above the ground.

Step 4: Return to the starting position through a count of 10 seconds.

Step 5: Repeat three times without resting.

'King's Speech' gay Oscar winner thanks boyfriend
Joey DiGuglielmo / Feb 28, 2011 / Washington Blade

It was a great year for film but not such a good year for the Oscars.

The year brought solid movies like last night's Best Picture winner "The King's Speech" and nominee "The Social Network," but the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony telecast was unusually flat with co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway exhibiting little chemistry and offering few laughs.

It was so bad that a mid-show sequence that found eight-time Oscar host Billy Crystal returning to the stage for a tribute to long-time Oscar host Bob Hope and the Academy's first telecast in the '50s, made one pine for those Oscar hosts of yore. One yearned for Crystal to simply take the reins. Even 50-year-old kinescopes of Hope's oft-repeated jokes seemed fresher and funnier than the schtick Franco and Hathaway delivered.

The show, too, felt off -- and I'm not one of these perennial moaners who say the telecast is always too long. Last night didn't feel overly long -- just bad. The off-key kids' choir singing "Over the Rainbow" -- wearing T-shirts and swaying wildly out of sync -- was painful. That gave way to a backdrop of the Emerald City and this year's winners returning to the stage for a sing-along. Oscar has never been known for its production numbers, but to end on such an amateurish, maudlin note was jarring.

The lesbian-themed  "Kids Are All Right," up for four awards, won none.

Two gay filmmakers -- neither household names -- ended up with Oscars, though. The Blade couldn't independently confirm the s-xual orientation of sound mixer Lora Hirschberg, a co-winner for her work on "Inception," but several media outlets are reporting that the woman she kissed before heading to the stage is her partner. Hirschberg also worked on "The Dark Knight," "Batman Begins," "Titanic," "The Horse Whisperer" and "Panic Room."

And Iain Canning, a 31-year-old Brit who shared the Best Picture Oscar for "The King's Speech" with Gareth Unwin and Emile Sherman, thanked "my boyfriend, Ben" from the stage. Canning's credits include "The King of Mykonos," "Linear," "Mary and Max" and "Hunger."

Sorry, about the Feb 29, 2011. My Bad!   Maybe it's because they wanted to change me from Taurus to Aires!   It changes everything!  Therefore, I have the right to add a day to push me forward - into a Taurus!  Or do i have to add 5 days?  Well, I might make more mistakes during the year and gain back those needed days - in order to restore my Taurus status.  But, don't worry, they decided not to recognize the sign changes despite the fact the stars alignment changed over time. Therefore, I am restoring this post back to the proper date!  Also, protest by members straigtened (not literally) me out! lololol   ...jake

Your Weight-Loss Foods: Add Some Spice

By James Beckerman, M.D. / February 24, 2011

While there is no single "magic spice bullet" that will guarantee significant weight loss, incorporating different seasonings into your food may help you lose weight.

There are lots of great reasons to add spices to your food:

They make food taste more interesting.
Some people find it challenging to switch from salty, fried foods to healthier food because of a perception that healthier food just won't taste as good. By adding oregano, pepper and garlic, for example, you can fool your taste buds into thinking they are experiencing a higher-calorie treat.

They can reduce your appetite.
Cooking with garlic and spicy chilies is a great way to make your first serving more satisfying and keep you from reaching for seconds.

They can increase your metabolic rate.
Capsaicin (found in chilies) and capsiate (found in paprika and red peppers) – can increase your metabolism by as much as 10% for short periods of time.

Using these ingredients in your cooking will help you enjoy your food more while eating less of it. In restaurants, asking your server to make your food spicy is easy enough, and the chef usually appreciates the opportunity to prepare a more authentic-tasting dish.

Steven Davies becomes first British cricket athlete to come out as gay
Rick Chandler / Feb 28, 2011 / MSNBC

And a cricketer shall lead them? Steven Davies, who at 24 is one of Europe's rising stars and has practically his entire career ahead of him, announced to the world today that he's gay. Davies, who plays for Surrey, said in an interview with London's Daily Telegraph that he could no longer lie about his sexuality.

"I'm comfortable with who I am -- and happy to say who I am in public," Davies said.

And he said he hoped his decision would help other young gay people to have the confidence to follow in his footsteps.

"This is the right time for me…I feel it is right to be out in the open about my sexuality. If more people do it, the more acceptable it will become. That must be a good thing."

"To speak out is a massive relief for me, but if I can just help one person to deal with their sexuality then that's all I care about."

Davies said that he finally decided to reveal his secret after being called up for the Ashes tour to Australia (which England won). He said that being away from home for more than a month with the English team would have been uncomfortable without everyone knowing the truth.

He said he received wonderful support from his team-mates, especially fellow wicketkeeper Matt Prior and captain, Andrew Strauss, and now looks forward to getting on with, what he hopes will be, a long and successful career at the highest level.

Far from being a Don't Ask Don't Tell situation in team sports, especially in the U.S., coming out as gay can be more likely described as "Don't tell and we won't ask you to get the hell out." Europe has a long way to go before more gay athletes like Davies feel comfortable coming out: It was just three months ago that not a single British pro soccer player or agent would agree to appear in an anti-homophobia PSA commercial.

And in the U.S., just the crime of not being draped with women 24 hours a day could get a pro athlete accused of being gay (See: Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Mike Piazza, Jeff Garcia). Infamous homophobic rants by Tim Hardaway, Larry Johnson and John Rocker more or less represent where we are on the issue. It all makes what Davies did even more remarkable and courageous.
