Are 'Thrifty' Genes Sabotaging Your Metabolism?

Being frugal can be a good thing. But when it comes to the genes that determine your metabolic rate, being "thrifty" isn't so good. Long ago, when men and women survived by hunting and gathering, some people developed the tendency to store fat very easily and burn fat very slowly. These "thrifty" genes allowed our ancient ancestors to survive long famines. Women with the thrifty set of genes were able to get pregnant and breastfeed even when food was very scarce.

Today, probably about half of the population carries one or more of these thrifty genes. And though these genes were crucial for our ancestors' survival, they don't work well for us today. Our sedentary lifestyles, coupled with an abundant food supply, make it easy for anyone to gain unwanted weight -- especially those with thrifty genes. Even worse, researchers believe that thrifty genes tend to direct fat storage into the abdomen.

Though these genes may make losing belly fat more difficult, it doesn't make it impossible. Just like anyone else with a little extra cushion around the midsection, you have to eat right and exercise. Make sure you're doing a strength-training routine 2-3 times a week on non-consecutive days to increase your lean muscle mass and burn off that extra tummy fat.

"Gay" Couple Barred from Creation Museum Event

So it turns out creationists are also anti-gay -- a same-sex couple was denied entry to a Date Night event at the Creation Museum in Kentucky. And to add insult to injury, they didn't even get a refund for their tickets.

According to Jonathan Meador, who is a writer for the Louisville-based LEO Weekly alternative newspaper, he, his female guest and another man were waiting to enter the event on February 11th. When the other man, Joe Sonka, told security personnel that the date for whom he was waiting was another man, they were told they would not be allowed in.

Meador and his female date were allowed to attend. "On the website, there was no mention of sexual orientation," he said.

However, Mark Looy, chief communications officer for the Creation Museum, said it was clear from the promotional material that the event was for heterosexual couples only.

"The message was one of Christian marriage, which the Bible teaches is between a man and a woman," Looy said.

Meador admitted that Sonka had posted a blog entry in January saying that it was the patriotic duty of his readers to send a flamboyantly gay couple to the event.

Looy said that message suggests the group was looking to provoke an incident.

"We are not going to allow anyone to come to a private event and be disruptive," Looy said. "It's not fair to the other people who also paid to attend the event. We welcome anyone to come to the Creation Museum during regular business hours because we want all people to be exposed to our message."

Meador denied that the group was looking for a confrontation, claiming they attended the event out of curiosity.

"It is telling, however, that they equate gayness and flamboyance with disruption," Meador said.

Meador said to his knowledge neither Sonka nor his male guest are gay.

They did not receive a refund of the $71.90 cost for the two tickets they had purchased online.
