Take Action:Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:Back to normal view » Baldness Cure A Step Closer: Scientists Regrow Hair In Mice
02/17/11; Huffington Post
Gone could be the days of toupees, combovers and hair plugs. For mice, at least.
Researchers at UCLA who set out to study a stress-blocking chemical compound have instead struck gold: a potential cure for baldness.
The scientists discovered bald mice who were treated with the compound for five days grew back full heads of hair in just three months, according to the study published Wednesday in PLoS One.
The likely giddy research team repeated the experiment several more times to confirm. Sure enough, the mice's hair grew back each time, and the compound also showed promise in preventing hair loss.
"This could open new venues to treat hair loss in humans through the modulation of the stress hormone receptors, particularly hair loss related to chronic stress and aging," Million Mulugeta, an adjunct professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, told Popular Science.
So how legit is this? Well, it's unknown whether the treatment could actually work for humans. But the researchers were hopeful enough to apply for a patent to use the compound for hair growth.
According to The New York Times, the reaction from the dermatology and hair loss community is mixed. The Times writes:
Dr. George Cotsarelis, chairman of the dermatology department at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, said any treatment developed from the research would probably be useful only for hair loss related to stress, likes that caused by one-time events, rather than as a treatment for genetic baldness.
Even if you're skeptical about this week's news, there's still cause to hope for a baldness cure. In December, German researchers (also studying mice) discovered stem cells could be used to regrow hair follicles. Again, it remains to be seen if the treatment is also effective in humans.
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT - Chick-fil-a restaurants for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!

Target changes giving policy that led to boycott
17 Feb 2011 / Dallas Voice / by David Taffet
Target has changed its corporate donation policy more than six months after LGBT groups criticized the company for donating $150,000 to Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who said he thought someone who said it was OK to kill gay people was a nice guy.
The new policy involves a committee of senior executives overseeing donations to parties and candidates.
Since the donation was made, Human Rights Campaign tried to negotiate a comparable donation to LGBT groups, but the company broke off talks. Many members of the LGBT community stopped shopping at Target and HRC deducted 15 points from Target's Corporate Equality Index score.
The LGBT Creating Change conference was held just blocks from Target's Minneapolis headquarters this month. Creating Change organizers approached Target about sponsoring the conference, but the company declined. However, employees from Target corporate headquarters volunteered at the conference.
Best Buy, which is also based in Minneapolis and also made a large donation to the PAC supporting Emmer, the anti-gay Republican running for Minnesota governor, was a sponsor of Creating Change.
Target says its has supported Twin Cities Pride in the past and plans to continue doing so. The company also says it will contribute to gay Pride celebrations in San Francisco and Chicago.
Ironically, the political donation may have backfired for the candidate as well. The money Target gave to Emmer may have energized enough people in the LGBT community to vote for Mark Dayton, the Democrat who won the election by a slim margin.
"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
