Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
The Gravitational Pull of Habit

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D, Lifes - January 27, 2012

Happy New Year! Each week in January I'll be addressing one of four subjects from my Inner Diet program. Each represents the building blocks of a healthier lifestyle, thinner body and happier, more active future. Week 4: Putting the previous week's advice together and taking action now and for the rest of your life...

The Gravitational Pull of Habit

I want to talk to you about the importance of taking action as it pertains to what I'm going to call your inner space. In order for you to create the changes necessary for successful weight loss, you must first create changes in your inner space. The thinking always precedes the doing and, if it's lifestyle change you seek, the bottom line is this: You will never become who you want to be by remaining who you are.

Let me start by sharing a humorous email from a woman who was struggling with her weight, which got me thinking about all of this space stuff in the first place:

Okay, this losing weight deal is hard. I'm drinking my water, following my diet, exercising daily. So, to give myself a break, I thought well....maybe if I lived on another planet I would be at my ideal weight and not have to do all this work anymore. After much research and having to admit that the gravitational pull of earth has not increased in the past couple of years I guess I'm "stuck" here. I weigh much too much on Jupiter and a little less on Saturn and waaaayy over the top visiting the Sun, plus they haven't created a 100% sun blocker. So, now, all I ask for is the proverbial "pat on the back" and the simple words: "Hang in there, the best is yet to come!" Her point about her weight being tied to the different gravitational pulls of the planets made me laugh, but it also made me think about weight loss in another way. As I was thinking about the concept of gravitational pull, I had a very interesting thought about another powerful gravitational force in our everyday lives. And that force is the gravitational force of habit.

Gravity is also defined as The state or condition of being grave, being in danger or being threatened.

As I read that definition, I thought about how this also relates to you and weight control. Remaining overweight takes a tremendous physical toll on your body, but it also creates an enormous emotional drain on your spirit. And this negative one/two punch combination can be lethal. The word gravity fits well here, as being overweight is defined as a grave or serious condition.

It occurred to me that the gravitational pull of the earth is very much like the gravitational pull of habit. As I thought about that email message I received from that woman, it dawned on me that this is one of the major obstacles to successful weight control. That is, most people fail to break free from the strong and relentless gravitational pull of habit.

Balance, according to mental health experts, provides the rhythm of life, and balance is critical to your health, wellness and happiness. You need balance if you want to find peace, harmony and contentment in your life. Regarding nutrition, exercise, work and play, balance is definitely what is needed to find your center and keep you on a steady course. The problem is that the force of habit interferes with your desire for balance. The force of habit is what draws people back to old, negative, self-defeating behaviors. The truth is that most don't break free from their old habits and this is why so many people fail at weight loss. Whether it's the habits that created your overweight body in the past or the habits that keep you from creating healthy change in the present, one truth remains: Habit is the enemy of change.

To stay with the space theme here that I've started, the strong gravitational force of habit leaves you, just like a satellite, stuck in a continuous and unchanging orbit circling the problem. Habit keeps you locked in an orbit around negative thinking and unhealthy eating. And many become lost in that orbit – trapped by the strong and relentless gravitational pull of habit.

If you want to succeed at weight loss, you have to operate a bit like mission control does at NASA. You have to monitor your progress continuously, keep your hands on the controls constantly and relentlessly put forth your best effort to help yourself break free from the strong gravitational pull of habit and launch your new life successfully.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

NC gov's exit shakes up vote on gay marriage ban
By TOM BREEN - Jan. 27, 2012 - Associated Press - Sacramento Bee

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Something unexpected happened on the way to North Carolina's vote on a gay marriage ban this May: Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue decided not to run for re-election, meaning more voters who oppose the ban could turn out at the polls.

Before Thursday's development, mostly Republican voters were expected to show up to pick their nominees for governor and president, and likely make North Carolina the last state in the Southeast to block same-sex marriage.

Now gay rights supporters hope they have a better chance of shooting down the constitutional amendment with more Democrats showing up May 8 to pick a candidate for governor at the same time. Gay marriage opponents believe they have the votes sewn up anyway and it won't make much of a difference.

"I'm sure that supporters of the amendment thought that, strategically, putting the question on the May ballot was their best chance," said Michael Bitzer, a professor of politics and history at Catawba College. "That strategy just got blown out of the water."

People on both sides of the question see the referendum here as having significant national implications: Gay marriage will either be banned in a clean sweep of the South, or there will be a stunning Dixie rejection.

"Given the fact that this amendment won't be decided by such a narrow slice of voters as it would have been previously, it increases the optimism from our side," said Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group. "It's something we have to consider carefully in light of all the other issues in other states around the country this year."

If Perdue's departure hurts the ban's chances, it would be ironic, given that her objections to its appearance on the November ballot helped convince lawmakers to move it back to spring.

Perdue opposes the amendment and said she didn't want to see it on any ballot, but she worried that Republicans wanted it in November to help their chances in the general election. Turnout for primary elections is historically lower than in November, and without a contested Democratic primary in either the gubernatorial or presidential races, there was little reason for Democratic voters to turn out in large numbers this spring.

"Democrats didn't want it on the November ballot because they feared it would be bad for them in the presidential and gubernatorial races," said John Dinan, a professor at Wake Forest University. "Nobody could have predicted at that point that the May primaries would be much more contested. Nobody planned it this way."

A Democratic primary could bring out voters more likely to oppose bans on gay marriage, said Richard Matland, a professor at Loyola University Chicago who co-authored a paper last year that analyzed every single state referendum on gay marriage.

All 34 of those votes were in favor of banning gay marriage, except for a 2006 referendum in Arizona where the measure was narrowly defeated, although Arizona would ban same-sex marriage in a subsequent vote.

Although the results are essentially uniform, Matland said there are important distinctions, especially regarding turnout. In general, higher turnout means closer elections featuring more "episodic" voters like young people, who tend to be more supportive of gay marriage.

"Turnout really does drive the process," he said. "If there does turn out to be a big campaign with a lot of candidates able to get up and running, it might make the North Carolina referendum a lot more interesting."

Supporters of same-sex marriage hope that's the case.

"Having a Democratic governor's race definitely helps our chances," said Jeremy Kennedy, campaign manager for the Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families, the group leading the opposition to the ballot measure.

Gay marriage opponents, though, say the issue cuts across party lines, and has significant support among Democrats and unaffiliated voters as well as Republicans.

"I don't think it'll have any effect," said the Rev. Ron Baity, president of Return America, one of the groups working to secure passage of the measure. "I'm sure the amendment is going to pass."

Tami Fitzgerald, co-chairwoman of the Vote FOR Marriage NC coalition, which supports the amendment, said she welcomes the prospect of a contested Democratic primary.

"The more folks that turn out on May 8, the better," she said.

Certainly, there are complexities among Democratic voters that may work in favor of amendment supporters like Fitzgerald.

The emergence of a black candidate such as Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, who is considering a bid, could attract a disproportionate number of black voters, according to David McLennan, a political science professor at William Peace University, who tend to be more conservative on gay marriage.

The primary "creates some confusion to what's going to happen," he said. "It could go any number of ways."
