Re: [Peckers_Pics] Male/Gay Health-Discussion-PICS Model Wars-Jan 21, 2012-Anti-Gay Bullying Common in Elementary Schools

I am an elementary school teacher = primarily 6/7/8 grades - in the Chicago Public School system and I see that "broader culture" every day. This is the complex reality of our macho-based American culture. We live in a country where power, strength, force and testosterone (not hormonally, but socially) are the primary drivers.

When I was a kid growing up in New Hampshire - small town values as you hear so often from the likes of Santorum and the Tea Party activists - I Ilved in the world of the John Birch Society. Guns and bad f-cking language and being tough were the things that earned you respect. The people were racist, but it was inbred and legacy racism - and this was NOT the South. No one thought of those racist words (sissy, f-g, etc.) as racist - they were part of every day vernacular. If you wanted to talk about someone or something that was off of mainstream - it was "that's so gay" or the media were owned by "Jew money" (and I'm Jewish, so you know that was painful), homosexual meant weak and deviant. Cultural sensitivity also meant weak.

Today, much has changed culturally, but for kids growing up in the inner city much has not changed. For many, the American dream has not yet been realized and instead, they live with much higher violence and the reality that school kids may be shot or attacked on the way home from school. Mach-ness is a still a powerful force in the urban ethnic household. I hear hardcore swearing and those cultural epithets every day. Its a hard and cold world in these kids' environment and the evolving societal values have not yet reached them. I am not going to say that they have not become more culturally aware - they have - but fundamental values are very hard to change. I learned to swear from the street at 11 or 12 years old and heard about the curse of fats, Jews, homos, etc right off the bat. If you weren't a part of the "culture" you were ostracized and often kicked around and bullied. Believe me, I know first hand.

So I guess what I'm saying is that our society still has a lot of work to do to turn this around. And it starts at home - thats where you have legacy racism - anti-gay, anti-semite, anti-anyone that is not like them. That's why its so important to teach the importance of diversity and multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity in our schools. Because when the only people doing the talking are racist - thats the only message our children hear. And thats why we cannot elect Santorum or his like at any cost.

Thank you Warren for this incredible view-point. And, can you imagine what is going on in TN; whereas, "don't say gay" bill is being discussed in the TN House of Reps (will not allow teachers to discuss, gay, homosexuality from kindergarden through 8th grade; therefore, teachers would not be allowed to address sexuality, bullying, bigotry towards sexual identity, etc at school). You raised very good points and it is appreciated. Once again, thank you ....Jake

> I heard something the other day that made a lot of sense, especially as it relates to programming and commitment. I was doing some research regarding human potential, achievement and peak performance when I ran across an analogy that I found powerful. It dealt with the power of self-talk and self-determination, which I refer to as inner programming.
>
> Consider the fertile soil of a farmer's field. The farmer decides what crop he wants to grow and then he plants the appropriate seeds. The ground in which he prepares and then plants has no choice but to produce the very crop that the farmer has planted╜ whether it be corn, wheat, barley or even weeds. The ground doesn't debate, challenge or try to change the seed; its only purpose is to produce the crop.
>
> The land gives the farmer a choice and he can plant whatever he chooses. The land is neutral and doesn't care what he plants. It will simply return what's planted and it will return it in abundance if cared for properly. This is where we can draw a parallel to the human mind and your inner programmer. You see we, like the farmer, are also the planters of seeds. Our seeds, however, are of a psychological nature. In this case, these are the seeds of thought and behavior. Where the farmer plants his seeds in the ground, we plant seeds in our minds. The type of seed that you plant will then determine the crop that you grow. Simple enough, don't you think?
>
> So, if you plant seeds of negativism, self-doubt and apprehension, you produce a life full of fear, frustration and helplessness. On the other hand, if you plant seeds that are positive, hopeful and strong, you produce a much healthier and successful life. The seeds of thought we plant become the programs that we run in our minds. And these are the programs that dictate our behavior.
>
> Are you planting seeds of success or planting seeds of failure? Exactly what kind of farmer are you and what crop are you hoping to grow?
>
> I believe that each one of you has the ability to change, break old unhealthy habits and learn how to live a healthier life. The flexibility given to us at birth, through our brains and our minds, provide all that we need to learn new behaviors and to create healthy change in our lives. For example, brain-injured people constantly baffle the experts by demonstrating astounding recuperative abilities, and research clearly shows how healthy areas of the brain often compensate, adjust and take over for the injured parts. Our brains and our ability to create change are very impressive in my opinion!
>
> I'm also impressed by those people who overcome the odds and demonstrate the ability to perform the mental gymnastics necessary for lifestyle change. In the spirit of the farming example I just gave, these are the people who learn how to plant and grow new seeds of thought. I'm always impressed by those who succeed but, for every one that succeeds, there are always many more who wander about aimlessly looking for that magic answer that will instantly transform their lives and reshape their bodies. I'm sure you know some of those people as well, and, perhaps until now, you may have even been one of them.
>
> Your birthright is the gift of the human brain and with it comes a mind that provides you with the ability to adapt to almost anything. And because you have this wonderful apparatus, you are so much more potential than you are reality. With such great equipment, certainly a healthier lifestyle is within your reach. All it takes is the willingness to plant the right seeds and then nurture those seeds to fruition.

Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

> Anti-Gay Bullying Common in Elementary Schools, GLSEN Report Shows
> Opposing Views / Submitted by GLAAD on Jan 19, 2012
>
> This week, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) released a report from a study examining the elementary school climate. The report, Playgrounds and Prejudice: Elementary School Climate in the United States is the first of its kind to examine the incidence of anti-LGBT name calling and harassment. The findings show that derogatory remarks about the LGBT community are among the most common used by elementary school students, with nearly half of all students hearing anti-gay epithets regularly and 75% of students report being harassed on a regular basis.
>
> The findings are of no surprise to current students because they hear it all of the time. Phrases like "that's so gay" and the casual use of anti-gay epithets aimed at fellow students regardless of their orientation or gender identity are all too common. "Words like 'sissy,''fairy,''f**got' and 'dike' are weapons of choice for children who want to hurt their peers," said GLSEN's executive director Eliza Byard in an interview with ABC. "Learning words can wound someone and turn into patterns of bullying," Byard continues, "It can be painful and limiting for children who are outside some artificial norm."
>
> The ABC article "Homophobia Starts in Elementary School; Teachers Do Little" featured a Nebraska family, giving voice to statistics in the report on the inclusion of LGBT families at school. 8-year-old Clare had been taunted at school for having more than one mom. In this instance, the teacher was able to address the name-calling with the students, and their behaviors have since changed. Of the teachable moments, one of Clare's moms said, "It's important for kids to see that they need to take care of each other and help each other out, rather than take each other down."
>
> Gail Connolly, executive director for the National Association of Elementary School Principals couldn't agree more. "Elementary principals are painfully aware of the impact that name-calling, bullying and bias have not only on an individual student's development, but also in disrupting a positive school culture that nurtures the whole child," Connolly said in an interview with MSNBC.
>
> "Our latest research on bias-based remarks and bullying in America' s elementary schools provides new understanding of the experiences facing our youngest students," Byard said in remarks included in the MSNBC piece "What kids hear on the playground; `Your so gay!'" In conjunction with the report, GLSEN released a toolkit for elementary schools to more successfully create safe and welcoming climates for all students and the families they come from.
>
> GLAAD applauds news coverage from outlets like MSNBC, ABC, the Huffington Post, and The Advocate for shedding a light on the important findings of GLSEN's elementary school climate report. We encourage the media to continue to seek out and lift up the stories of students and families, like Clare and her moms, who can share their experience and build support for creating welcoming schools for all students.
