Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
The Power of Hope

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D, / January 13, 2012

Happy New Year! Each week in January I'll be addressing one of four subjects from my Inner Diet program. Each represents the building blocks of a healthier lifestyle, thinner body and happier, more active future. Week 2: Finding your motivation...

The Power of Hope

As a writer, teacher, therapist, life strategist and an overall observer of the world around me, I've found one universal truth: One of the clearest indicators of future success and one of the strongest influences on the human spirit is the presence or absence of hope. Hope is motivation's fuel. Without it, there's no motivation. For those wanting to restructure their lives and reshape their bodies, hope is an extremely powerful and positive force.

The factors that contribute to success and compel people to continue in the face of opposition has always intrigued me. As a matter of fact, this kind of thinking is precisely what drew me to psychology in the first place. I actually remember what could be my first real psychology moment, if you will.

I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I was very young and had just finished watching the movie "The Wizard of Oz," which, to this day, remains one of my favorite stories of all time.

After the movie ended, I was brushing my teeth, when a scene from the movie flashed into my mind and literally froze me in my tracks. It was the scene where Toto pulls the curtain aside and reveals the little old man. As you may recall, he's standing behind a partition pulling levers, pushing buttons and screaming into the microphone, "I am the great and powerful Oz. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

At that moment, I wondered if the body that I saw reflecting back at me was really me or if the real me was behind those eyes somewhere, like the little old man in Oz, pulling levers and pushing buttons that brought life and movement to my body. Quite a heady thought for a young boy, but this was an astounding revelation to me and it was truly a defining moment in my life. For it was at that moment that I realized that who I am is not what I see. This event influenced my career path and continues, to this day, to shape my perception of the world around me.

However, as time passed and I began to seriously study human behavior, I began to see how these two aspects of the self are intimately connected. The physical body that you see reflected back at you in the mirror is defined, motivated and shaped by the thinking part of you inside. So, if you follow my analogy, your body and your life are a literal reflection of what levers you pull and what buttons you push.

It's the thinking part of you (the manager of your behavior) that makes all the decisions. And it's those decisions that ultimately create the shape of your body and define the quality of your life. Simply put, your lot in life is the direct result of the choices that you make and the actions that you take. Just as that little old man behind the curtain had the ability to take control of Oz, you also have the ability to take control. It's all about what buttons you push and what levers you pull. But it all begins with hope.

All of this talk about hope was actually triggered by something my late wife shared with me years ago. She told me that she had found what she believed to be the most inspirational message that she had ever read, written by Ellen Stovall of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship:

With communication, comes understanding and clarity;

With understanding, fear diminishes;

In the absence of fear, hope emerges;

And in the presence of hope, anything is possible. What a powerful statement. I was particularly drawn to the last line, And in the presence of hope, anything is possible. Hope is such a critical ingredient in the recipe for success. It may very well be the driving force behind motivation. For without hope, there is no dream. Without hope, there's no motivation. Without hope, there's no success.

One way to reconnect with your own sense of hope and make this powerful motivator a part of your everyday life is to write the word HOPE on a piece of paper and carry it with you in your pocket or purse. This way, you'll never be "hopeless" and that paper will serve as a constant reminder of your goal. Hope is the spark that ignites your motivational fire and moves you down the road toward success.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
    Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

Gay Iowa Official Alleges Discrimination
By Trudy Ring - Advocate - Jan 13, 2011

Iowa workers' compensation commissioner Chris Godfrey, who is gay, is suing the state for discrimination, defamation, and harassment, after being asked to resign and then receiving a deep pay cut.

Godfrey's annual salary was cut by nearly $36,000 last year, to $73,250, which is the minimum for his job under state law, after he refused Gov. Terry Branstad's second request that he resign,  The Des Moines Register  reports.

Branstad first asked for Godfrey's resignation in December 2010, shortly before he took office. Branstad asked for the resignations of many of his predecessor's appointees, a common move for new governors, the paper notes. Godfrey was first appointed in 2006 by Gov. Tom Vilsack for a partial term, then in 2009 to a full term by Gov. Chet Culver. Vilsack and Culver are Democrats; Branstad is a Republican.

Godfrey declined Branstad's resignation request, "citing his accomplishments on the job," the Register reports. "He also noted that his six-year term doesn't expire until April 30, 2015, and that the six-year term is intended to insulate the workers' compensation commissioner from political pressure." After Godfrey turned down Branstad's second request, the governor cut his salary in July. Godfrey says top Branstad aides told him to accept the lower salary or leave his job.

Godfrey also says he was shut out of meetings and discriminated against in other ways by the governor, and his lawsuit, filed Thursday, seeks $1 million in compensation. A statement issued by Branstad's office denies discrimination based on sexual orientation or any other factor, and says Godfrey was asked to resign because "he oversaw an increase in workers' comp insurance, forcing additional costs onto Iowa businesses." Godfrey says he has received excellent performance evaluations and that the increase in cost was due to factors beyond his control.

"For those people that are going to be bullied by this governor or by someone else, I can lead by example and say, 'It's OK to stand up to someone, even someone as strong as the governor of the state of Iowa,'" Godfrey told the Register. "I can stand up to that bully, and it's going to be OK."
