Involvement or Commitment?
I want to address one of the most important ingredients in the recipe for success no matter what your goal is: commitment. However, my experience is that commitment is a powerful and scary word to a lot of people. As a matter of fact, just the thought of it strikes terror and doubt into the hearts of many. Truly committing yourself to something is actually not very common. How many things are you truly committed to? The question I want you to think about right now is this: Are you just involved in healthy living and weight loss or are you truly committed?
The reality is that most people just give lip service to weight loss and lifestyle change. They talk about it, think about it and make ill-prepared, half-hearted attempts at it. But only those who are truly committed to it find the right motivation and have a plan of action to accomplish it.
At the heart of this struggle to commit is honest confusion over exactly what being committed really means. I believe that most people don't truly understand the physical and emotional investment that true commitment demands. So, with that said, let me begin by defining our terms.The dictionary defines commitment as "dedication to a long-term course of action." Perhaps stick-to-itiveness is another word that works here. Anyway you look at it, dedication, persistence and perseverance is what adds up to commitment.
There's no success without commitment. This is true in any venture but is certainly true in weight loss and lifestyle change. You have to want it bad enough to be willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. Now that's commitment!
Commitment means always keeping your eye on the ball and your goal in mind. It's about making more mindful decisions and less mindless decisions. It's about putting your body and your mind under new management and running a tighter ship. It's about believing in yourself enough to make the tough choices. It's the act of walking the walk even when you don't feel like it.
I always like to break things down into manageable tasks. You see, if something seems impossible, most people won't even try.
For example, let's take dieting and weight loss. Committing to never eating sweets again for someone who is addicted to sweets is just too much to consider for most people. However, committing to making the next decision a healthy one is much easier to imagine and much easier to accomplish.
I remember this issue well when I was beginning to do the research for my doctoral dissertation. At first glance, writing a doctoral dissertation seemed like an impossible task to me. It was only after I began breaking it down into small steps that I began to finally see the finish line. Again, it always helps to break things down into smaller and more manageable tasks when you are working on staying committed to a long and difficult project.
I was thinking about all of this while I was on a plane recently, minding my own business. On the movie screen in front of me was a quote from an unknown author about commitment that I've shared with countless people over the years:
"The difference between commitment and involvement can be compared to a bacon and egg breakfast. The chicken was involved╜ the pig was committed."
That statement paints such a clear picture in my mind and underlines the basic fact that there's a major difference between commitment and involvement. It's so important that you understand this distinction. Because the truth is this: Most people are just involved in weight loss and healthy living while very few are truly committed. And it's only the truly committed that succeed!
So how about you? Are you truly committed to weight loss and better health or are you just involved?

Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
"Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

Bernice King's gay-inclusive speech at MLK rally surprises LGBT participants

Bernice King took the stage today at Atlanta's annual Martin Luther King Jr. rally and included gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people among the various groups she said need to come together to fulfill her father's legacy.
In a passionate, sermon-like speech about building unity, King said she didn't care if people were Hindu, Buddhist, Islamist, were from the North side or the South side, were black or white, were "heterosexual or homosexual, or gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender" -- that all people were needed to create unity.
LGBT people who attended the rally said they were shocked that King - who has a long anti-gay past -- actually acknowledged the community in a public speech, but said they were also glad because it shows people can evolve.
Rev. Maressa Pendermon, a minister with LGBT-inclusive Unity Fellowship Church, said she at first intended to tune out King because of her anti-gay past, but decided to pay attention one more time.
For her father's vision to be realized we've got to come together across boundaries and then she got in preacher mode. Then she said 'heterosexual or homosexual,' and then backed up and said 'lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.' We need all of us," Pendermon said.
There's always room for growth," Pendermon said, describing her reaction to King's words. "People grow and people change. Sometimes we don't let them. I wasn't expecting that. And I was already ready to shut down but I challenged myself to listen and I'm glad I listened."
Pendermon and her church were part of a counter protest in 2004 at the same intersection where today's rally took place. In 2004, King was an elder at Bishop Eddie Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and the two led a march of thousands through the streets of Atlanta to protest, among other issues, gay marriage. She has also said that her father "did not take a bullet for same-sex marriage."
Craig Washington, a founder of the Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde breakfast where LGBT activists and allies gather before participating in the MLK march, said he was "surprised and actually excited" by King's words.
It reminded me that people can and do shift attitudes. They do evolve," he said. "What Bernice's turnabout ...spoke to is potential to change. We still have to remember they too are human.
I was like, 'What?' I clutched pearls. I sure did. I was not prepared to applaud Bernice King today and she gave me something to applaud," Washington said.
Paulina Helm-Hernandez, the LGBT honorary grand marshal for today's march and rally, said she also was surprised to hear King's inclusive words.
"I thought it was great. First time I've ever heard her say lesbian, gay, bi and trans out loud," she said. "She said homosexual at first and then corrected herself. It takes a lot of grace to do something like that when you're on a roll."
Whether King was sincere and genuine with her words remains to be seen, Helm-Hernandez said.
"I feel like in coming years that will be telling what she said was genuine. I hope so," she said.
King was recently named CEO of the King Center after she left New Birth following Eddie Long's sex scandal in which he was sued by young men who accused him of coercing them into sexual relationships.
