The biceps are those sexy muscles that twist along the front of your upper arm. The Standing Curl is a great exercise that will sculpt and strengthen your proverbial guns. Let's begin!

Step 1: Hold a pair of dumbbells and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Extend your arms by your sides, with palms facing forward and knees slightly bent.

Step 2: Feather your breathing as you curl the dumbbells up through a count of 10 seconds to just past a 90-degree angle. Hold and squeeze for 2 seconds.

Step 3: Keep your elbows tight against your body as you lower the weights to the starting point through a count of 10 seconds.

Step 4: Repeat three times without resting.

Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey to visit Harvard University today

Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey will headline an event at Harvard University today to launch the singer's Born this Way Foundation, as businesses, politicians and a statewide gay rights group endorsed the foundation's anti-bullying message.

Lady Gaga will appear today at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre with Winfrey and spiritual leader Deepak Chopra, among others. The Born This Way Foundation is a nonprofit charity with a mission to "foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated."

The foundation has yet to announce many details about its plans, but it's expected to make cyberbullying a focus. Lady Gaga, herself once a bullying victim, has been outspoken on the issue. After the suicide of a New York teenager last year was linked to harassment over his sexual orientation, the singer wrote on Twitter that "bullying must become illegal."

The star power behind the group, along with help from Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society and its Graduate School of Education, makes it one of the most high-profile efforts against bullying, which has increasingly become a focus of education experts, policymakers and politicians nationwide.

When she first announced last year that she would start a foundation with along with her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, the singer said that it would address issues like "self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change."

According to the @BTWfoundation Twitter account, the foundation is "Led by @LadyGaga and her mother Cynthia, we are building a brave new world where humanity is embraced, individuals are empowered, and intolerance is eliminated.''

Today, the executive director of MassEquality, a leading gay rights group, praised Lady Gaga's message but also pointed out that lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender youth in Massachusetts still face high suicide rates and other challlenges in Massachusetts.

"This Foundation supports the core values that any just, accepting society should embrace and empower: the right to live authentically in safety; the resources to learn the skills to be empowered; and the opportunity to enrich your own community with a message of inclusion,'' MassEquality Executive Director Kara Suffredini said in a statement. "These values are critical to empowering all minority groups, not just LGBT people, to live to their fullest potential.''

Meanwhile, Bloomberg News reported that seven Harvard University students who were expelled in 1920 on suspicion of being gay will be remembered in a campus protest today. A group of Harvard students and faculty, called "Their Day in the Yard," is asking for the college to grant degrees to the students expelled more than nine decades ago, Bloomberg reported.

The launch of the Born This Way Foundation will be live streamed here starting at 4 p.m. The event is closed to the general public.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino announced yesterday that he would attend the launch of the foundation. This afternoon, Menino plans to join 30 Boston public school students for a "youth summit on the issue of bullying in schools" as part of Lady Gaga's anti-bullying campaign.

As part of the visit, Harvard Square businesses are offering discounts for their merchandise and will donate a portion of their sales to the Born this Way foundation.

Upstairs on the Square, for example, this week is inviting people "to come to our over-the-top bar, pink and gold and all dressed up just like Lady Gaga, for a glass of this special rose for $6 per glass, with profits going to the Born This Way Foundation,'' according to Harvardsquare. com.

And Zinnekans waffles "will be donating $2 for each totally sinful Lady Gaga & Oprah waffle (banana, whipped cream, dark chocolate and caramel).''

Local realtor Holly Donaldson of Coldwell Banker is donating 5 percent of her next home sale to the foundation, according to the Harvard Square Business Association.

"The Born This Way Foundation addresses issues such as self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development through research, education and advocacy,'' Harvard Square Business Association said in a statement. "The Gaga nonprofit is in partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation."

Meanwhile, Cambridge Community Television reports that the public won't get much of a chance to see Lady Gaga and Oprah, who will be joined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, and Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree.

"Everything about the affair is a closely kept secret, presumably to prevent crowding and disorder,'' Cambridge Community Television reports on its blog. "Tickets are not available through the Harvard Box Office, and Harvard and Cambridge police departments are not releasing information about how or when Lady Gaga will get there. Requests for press access have been unanswered by the foundation office and politely turned down by Harvard's Office of Public Affairs and Communications.''

Did God really drop the ball this time?

"He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them "man." (Gen. 5:2)

Then God dropped the ball — at least, recent articles published by the Associated Press, carried on National Public Radio and the Huffington Post would lead you to that conclusion.

According to the reports in these articles, about one in 10,000 children are born with brain functions of one sex, but are trapped in the body of the other sex. It would appear that we aren't all what we seem to be!

Most are labeled with "gender identity disorder," a psychiatric diagnosis. However, a few specialists have come to the conclusion there is no psychological disorder and these really are beings trapped in the wrong body.

"Pediatricians need to know these kids exist and deserve treatment," said Dr. Norman Spack of Children's Hospital, Boston. He went on to say, "If you open the doors, these are the kids who come. They're out there. They're in your practices." (NPR, Feb. 20)

Understand, these children are physically normal in all ways. They do not have issues at the levels where errors occur in the XX or XY assignments in the 46 chromosome. Persons who are born with these chromosome errors often will develop attributes of both sexes and may or may not respond to various types of therapy or surgical procedures.

An 8-year-old second-grader in Los Angeles is a typical patient. Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, "I am boy," and has stuck with that belief. The family was shocked, but now refers to the child as a boy and is watching for the first signs of puberty to begin treatment." (AP, Feb. 20)

To accept the declaration of an 18-month-old child that she is in the wrong body and to allow this declaration to develop to where it is an accepted fact is truly a spectacle of non-parenting.

Even some medical professionals who view sex-change operations as a viable solution for a select group of patients warn, "Offering sex-changing treatment to kids younger than 18 raises ethical concerns, and their parents' motives need to be closely examined." (Dr. Margaret Moon, American Academy of Pediatrics' Bioethics Committee, AP, Feb. 20)

Play or pretending to be the opposite sex is common among very young children. But these children are different. They feel certain they were born with the wrong bodies. These children sometimes resort to self-mutilation, and often face depression and attempt suicide.

For once, the thrust of this column is not to draw a conclusion that is conservative or liberal. Rather, it is to raise a question that will generate different conclusions in the readers. Does the liberal atmosphere our children now live in where they are exposed to deviant behaviors such as same-sex "marriage" and glorification of a homosexual lifestyle fuel the increase in gender identity cases? According to Spack, his case load is now about four to five times as large as it was in the 1990s.

Consider that children are bombarded by multiple television programs which portray homosexual and even trans-gender lifestyles as normal, and the fact President Barack Obama refuses to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, down to the antics of Barney Frank who flaunts his lifestyle all over Capitol Hill. What effect do these types of influences have on the decision-making capacities of these children?

Which came first, the problem, disease, condition or whatever name is assigned to it — or the treatment by sex-change operations (which will end up being required to be covered under government-approved insurance plans) as a standard medical condition.

Will the Department of Human Services order faith-based organizations to provide "sex-change insurance" for their employee in the same manner that birth-control products and morning-after pills were mandated to be included?

Secondary Gain

The sixth and final most common issue that leads to dieting failure is Secondary Gain. How does this interfere with your ability to diet, lose weight and control eating?

This issue identifies people who hold a deep belief that there are good reasons not to lose weight. In fact, they believe that there are benefits to remaining overweight.

If you're one of these people, it's easy to understand why you've been unable to succeed at weight loss! It's almost as if you have two different personalities struggling for control inside your head.

There's the part of you that wants to eat better, feel better, lose weight, and do the right thing nutritionally.

Then there is this other part of you that doesn't seem to care about what you weigh or eat or how you feel. That part constantly makes excuses that result in diet failure.

Secondary Gain is the most psychologically serious issue and, as a result, it may be the most interesting of the six Inner Diet scales.

It's also the issue that appears to affect the least number of people, according to my research with The Inner Diet Questionnaire. It shows that only about 5% of those who are overweight have this problem.

I strongly believe that this number is larger than 5%, and my experience tells me that there are two primarily reasons why it doesn't show up more often.First, secondary gain is more often than not an unconscious issue. Since the origins of this issue are often repressed, many who struggle with this are simply not aware that this is a problem.

Second, many others are aware, but, as a coping mechanism, simply deny its existence.

Here's an example of conscious secondary gain with a young woman who was at a presentation I conducted a while back. I had just completed my explanation of Secondary Gain, when she said to me, You know, my roommate needs to hear this. I think she has a Secondary Gain problem.

I asked her to explain, and this is what she told me:

Her roommate, an aspiring actress, was overweight. She studied hard to learn the craft, but every time an audition came up, the roommate would always say that she was too heavy for the part.

No matter how much encouragement the woman gave her roommate, she would never go to auditions.

"I'll bet that she is using her weight as an excuse to avoid auditioning, so that she won't have to deal with the disappointment should she not get the part!" the young woman at the presentation told me.

I never met her roommate, so I don't know if that's true. But this scenario is an excellent example of Secondary Gain. If true, her roommate had an underlying motivation to remain overweight.An example of unconscious secondary gain that I have heard all too often involves adults who have been sexually abused as children. They often use their weight as a safety mechanism, holding on to the misguided belief that being overweight will make them less attractive to the opposite sex and thus help them avoid dealing with painful issues such as intimacy and sexuality.

This is often an unconscious issue for these people, because they may have repressed this very traumatic and devastating memory. People with sexual abuse in their past often benefit greatly from including professional counseling in their dieting and weight-loss program.

Marine, partner reflect on gay kiss seen around the globe: 'The world went away for a few minutes'

A kiss is just a kiss unless you're a couple of strapping hunks and one is a U.S. Marine coming home from war to his male partner.
 
Then a Facebook photo of the big smooch goes viral and becomes a news event covered around the world.

Marine Sgt. Brandon Morgan returned Feb. 22 from Afghanistan to Hawaii and jumped into partner Dalan Wells' arms. (Morgan is 5-feet 11-inches tall; Wells is 6-foot-6.)

A friend, David Lewis, photographed the family reunion.

"With all that was going on, we didn't even know he was there taking pictures," Morgan says. "The world went away for a few minutes."
 
Morgan later posted the homecoming photos on his personal Facebook page and a friend then reposted the pictures on the Gay Marines page.

Within hours Sunday, the main photo had thousands of views and had been reposted on countless other pages. News stories ran worldwide. As of Tuesday, it had about 37,000 Facebook "likes" and nearly 9,000 comments.

"I can only imagine that it went viral because we were the first men to kiss," Morgan says. Shortly after the U.S. military ended it's gay ban late last year, two female Navy petty officers publicly kissed at a Virginia homecoming ceremony.

One of the couple's Facebook friends sent at critical message to Morgan's mother, driving her to tears.

"What did you do to mess up as a mother to make him do this?" read the comment.

Says Morgan, a Christian who grew up in Oakdale, Calif., near Modesto: "She loves me and my sister, who's a lesbian. She said, if you don't like my children and how I raised them, I don't care. My mother is awesome!"

Morgan, 25, and Wells, 38, have been a couple a short time and they've known each other a few years.

"I honestly knew I was in love with him from the first moment I met him," Morgan says, adding that before he came out he had made "a lot of mistakes," including marrying a woman.

During Morgan's six months in Afghanistan, "there was nonstop letter writing every day."

Wells, an oil painter in Oahu, says that when Morgan first asked him out, he said no.

"I didn't know how much he loved me and how much I was in love with him," Wells says.

The men say they plan to work with the gay military group Outserve.

Wells says he's not bothered by the sudden fame. "I'm a very shy person," Wells says. "If this helps one troubled teen and gives them hope for the future, if I can help, I will."
