Psychological Discomfort

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D - February 13, 2012

In part two of my 8-part, I addressed the strong role that stress plays in hindering your ability to stay on track, lose weight and manage your eating. Following stress, the second most-common psychological issue interfering with weight-loss success is called Psychological Discomfort.

My research shows that 72% of all overweight people struggle with this issue. They just can't seem to handle the intense discomfort that comes along with denying themselves their favorite old foods while dieting.

There are actually two types of discomfort: physical discomfort and psychological discomfort.

Physical discomfort is a bodily experience that typically presents itself as hunger pangs. Most dieters seem to be able to handle this fairly well.

Psychological discomfort, on the other hand, is an intense emotional experience that creates all kinds of problems for people seeking weight loss. Let me give you an example.

Imagine that you're out to lunch with a bunch of friends. You're on a weight-loss program and are about to eat your "on-program" food when you suddenly begin focusing on everyone else's "off-program" food. The
more you look at this food, the more mind-consuming it becomes and the more desperate your desire becomes to eat it!

For those with a low psychological discomfort threshold, dieting and lifestyle change seems like torture. It's this strong internal mental tug-of-war that creates this intense feeling of psychological discomfort. If your ability to deal with this psychological discomfort is low, you'll most likely succumb to the temptation and eat that off-program food.

This is a similar concept to what's known as a pain threshold. Some people can tolerate much more pain than others. Take going to the dentist, for example. Some can go and sit easy in that chair while others panic the moment they make the appointment.

If your psychological discomfort level is low, dieting and weight loss will be a tortuous process that, in all likelihood, will end in failure.

As a result, one of the key issues preventing most people from reaching their weight-loss goal is this overwhelming and intense desire to avoid the inevitable discomfort that's intimately associated with dieting and weight loss.

The remedy lies in bolstering your ability to withstand this kind of intense emotional discomfort.

Psychological discomfort lays the foundation for a psychology theory called The Approach/Avoidance Conflict, introduced by German psychologist and founder of social psychology Kurt Lewin. Approach/avoidance conflicts result when a goal has both desirable and
undesirable aspects attached to it.

Weight loss provides the perfect environment for this emotionally charged psychological tug-of-war, because it involves both positive and negative elements.

In approach/avoidance terms, part of you honestly wants to lose weight, feel better and get healthy (approach). At the same time, part of you is resistant to do what it takes to succeed (avoidance). Sometimes we truly are our own worst enemy!

On one hand, you're moved to approach weight loss because of all the life enhancing, health benefits that it delivers.

However, as you become more involved in your weight-loss program and begin missing your old favorite foods, you also find yourself confronted with avoidance behavior that's motivated by an innate mental resistance to change.

These negative feelings begin to grow rapidly, creating a powerful psychological desire within you to back away from weight loss in order to avoid these uncomfortable feelings of discontent.

Then, as you begin to drift further away from dieting and start eating your old favorite unhealthy foods again, your discomfort eases. As your negative feelings begin to subside, you feel the strength to approach weight loss again until these same feelings of negativity and avoidance again return, thereby motivating you to retreat once more. Thisapproach/avoidance behavior is the underlying psychology behind classical yo-yo dieting.

The remedy for dealing with the pressure of psychological discomfort lies in increasing your discomfort threshold.

My favorite example of someone employing a cognitive strategy to address this issue comes from a patient I had years ago. Her discomfort always reared its nagging little head at dessert time when she was out to dinner entertaining business clients with her husband.

Every time the waiter asked about dessert, she would feel her discomfort level begin to rise dramatically as her willpower began to weaken. She said she could actually hear the voice of her impulsive inner child begging and pleading for that dessert. At these times, she would simply close her eyes for a brief moment, take a deep cleansing breath and mentally send her demanding inner child to her room. This helped her to mentally separate herself from her discomfort and become the responsible adult she needed to be at that moment.

This is just one example of a simple but very powerful technique used to increase awareness, diffuse psychological discomfort and maintain control.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

N.J. Gay Nuptials Clear Hurdle
FEB. 14, 2012 - By HEATHER HADDON - Wall Street Journal

TRENTON-The effort to legalize same-sex marriage here passed a crucial test Monday, clearing the state Senate by a wider-than-expected margin and setting the stage for a push in the Assembly on Thursday.

After an emotional debate on the Senate floor, the legislation passed the Democratic-controlled chamber 24-16, bringing New Jersey a step closer to becoming one of seven states and Washington, D.C., where gay marriage is legal. The chamber erupted into applause when the vote was tallied.

The bill now faces an uncertain future, heading to the Assembly, where Democrats are in control but lawmakers' views remain murky.

Should the Assembly pass the measure, Gov. Chris Christie has vowed to veto it, which would trigger a potentially long, expensive override battle.

Supporters relished Monday's moment, no less so because it came on the same day same-sex marriage was signed into law in Washington state. Two years ago, the same bill went down to a crushing defeat in the New Jersey Senate.

"It means the world isn't changing, it means the world has already changed," said Steven Goldstein of Garden State Equality, during a news conference after the vote. "Wake up and smell the equality."

Opponents of the legislation said they would continue to fight what they saw as an assault on a timeless institution.

"When you give special rights to a small sexual minority, you rape the [First Amendment rights] of the majority," said Gregory Quinlan of the New Jersey Family Policy Council, a conservative advocacy group. It changes "what's been working for thousands of years."

Mr. Christie had called on fellow Republicans to vote against the bill, but two GOP senators defied him—Jennifer Beck and Diane Allen. Supporters noted that 10 more senators voted for the bill than in 2010, when it was defeated 20-14.

Democrats pledged to wrangle the votes to override Mr. Christie's veto by the end of the legislative session in January 2014. It takes 27 votes in the 40-member Senate and 54 in the 80-member Assembly to block a veto. Huge sums of money are expected to be spent on both sides as they lobby on the issue.

"We can override, and we will override," said Senate President Steven Sweeney, who abstained from voting on gay marriage in 2010 but is now one of the bill's most important champions.

During an impassioned, hourlong floor debate, Democrats implored Republicans to vote their conscience and put aside fears of "political retribution."

"Now is your moment. Now is the time to stand up and say yes," Mr. Sweeney said.

Only Republican Sen. Gerald Cardinale, of Bergen County, spoke against the bill, warning that gay marriage could blur long-held societal boundaries.

"Incest produces negative impacts on our society," Mr. Cardinale said. "But if we open marriage to some same-sex couples in the name of antidiscrimination, why not to all couples?"

"This bill opens Pandora's box," he added.

Gay-rights advocates said they had become more confident about Assembly passage with Monday's Senate vote. Advocates said they had enough Democratic votes and could peel off a Republican or two.

They will also be looking for lawmakers who abstain on Thursday, as they could be later turned into supporters of an override, said one person familiar with the advocates' discussions. But Mr. Quinlan predicted they wouldn't get much Republican support.

Gaining the support of just a handful of Republicans helped push gay marriage through the New York Legislature last year. Still, when asked if he would protect the bill's Republican supporters from opposition, Mr. Sweeney said it wasn't necessary as many lawmakers in other states who backed gay marriage haven't been voted out.

Mr. Christie has introduced a separate dynamic into the debate, calling for a public referendum. Two Rutgers-Eagleton polls on Monday had mixed results for supporters. One found that 54% of New Jersey residents surveyed support legalizing gay marriage, up from 46% in 2009. Another found most residents support Mr. Christie's call for a referendum on the issue.

Mr. Sweeney on Monday said a Senate bill for a referendum had "not a chance."

Instead, same-sex marriage advocates are targeting a few Republican senators who could potentially vote for an override.

Marsha Shapiro and Louise Walpin, a couple from South Brunswick, said they had breakfast last Friday with Republican Sen. Christopher "Kip" Bateman, who voted against the bill Monday. He has been seen as a possible supporter. "He gave us an opportunity to put out our thinking and provide some education," said Ms. Shapiro.
