    10 Bits of Wisdom

    By John H. Sklare, Ed.D,

    Published June 13, 2012

Even though I believe that we happen to live in the greatest nation on earth, these are definitely trying times. It seems that everywhere I turn I see people struggling in their lives. Some of the reasons that are causing people distress are self-imposed, due to their own reckless or thoughtless behavior that created the situation that now confronts them. In other cases, however, it may be simply a case of bad luck or unexpected illness that wreaks havoc in their lives.

The death of loved one, foreclosure of a home, loss of a job, an unexpected divorce or diagnosis of a serious health problem are events that, unfortunately, happen every day. I bet you know someone who's struggling with some life drama right now or, worse yet; perhaps it's you who is in the middle of the fight of your life today.

I was speaking with a dear friend of mine who's going through one of these situations right now with her health. After a rather long conversation about the challenges that she has before her, she asked me in frustrated angst, "So what words of wisdom do you have for me?"

Without a moment's hesitation, I found myself repeating to her a favorite saying of mine. It's written on a small ceramic tile that sits next to my toaster in my kitchen and I read it every single morning. It's attributed to an unknown author and reads as follows:

    Yesterday is history
    Tomorrow is mystery
    Today is a gift.
That's why we call it the PRESENT.

I've always found motivational quotes uplifting and inspirational. Today I thought, since I can't actually make the problems go away for those of you out there struggling with something today, perhaps a few words of wisdom might help. I should add that my friend asked me to repeat the quote above so she could write it down. She said she was going to make copies and then leave them in key spots all around her house. With that said, let me offer you 10 shorts bits of wisdom that I find meaningful and inspiring. I hope that at least one of these will ignite a flame and encourage the fighter within you to rise up and valiantly battle whatever it is that currently confronts you:
•Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right!
    - Henry Ford

•You see things and say, Why? But I dream things that never were and I say, Why Not?
    - George Bernard Shaw

•Pain is inevitable but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain but we can avoid joy.
    - Tim Hansel

•That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
    - Friedrich Nietzsche

•The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.
    - Mark Twain

•When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the one that has opened for us.
    - Alexander Graham Bell

•We are like tea bags - we don't know our own strength until we're in hot water.
    - Eleanor Roosevelt

•Accept challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.
    - George S. Patton

•The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson

•How does one become a butterfly? You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.
    -Trina Paulus

I hope that you can find a small grain of hope in at least one of these quotes above. There's nothing that you can bring to the fight, no matter what your battle may be today, that's more potent and energizing than a positive attitude and fighting spirit! As I see it, motivational quotes are often the activating event that seep into the hidden recesses of your mind and push your inner resources to surface.

I wish you all great strength in the days ahead at overcoming whatever it is that you're currently battling. Of course, in some cases, like a terminal illness, you simply must make the best of what time you have left. However, in most cases, once you truly put your mind to it and put forth an honest effort, victory is simply only a matter of time!
    Take Action:
    • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
    • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
    • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
    • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
    • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
    • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
    • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
    • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

U.S. Boy Scouts board member speaks out against gay ban
    Wed Jun 13, 2012 / Reuters

    * Ernst & Young CEO says he will work to change gay ban

    * AT&T CEO says he supports "change from within"

(Reuters) - Jim Turley, chairman and chief executive officer of Ernst & Young and a board member of the Boy Scouts of America, has joined calls to end the group's exclusion of gays.

Another Boy Scout board member, CEO Randall Stephenson of the telecommunications giant AT&T, said o n W ednesday he favors diversity but did not go as far as Turley in speaking against the Scouts' policy.

In a statement issued by Ernst & Young, the global tax and consulting firm, Turley said he will "work from within" the Boy Scouts to help change its policy that prohibits gays from being members or leaders of one of America's largest youth organizations.

"I support the meaningful work of the Boy Scouts in preparing young people for adventure, leadership, learning and service. However, the membership policy is not one I would personally endorse," Turley said.

"As I have done in leading Ernst & Young to being a most inclusive organization, I intend to continue to work from within the BSA Board to actively encourage dialogue and sustainable progress."

Turley's announcement came in the wake of a petition on Change.org, the web-based social change platform, that was signed by 275,000 people calling for the Boy Scouts to end the group's ban on homosexuals.

The petition was started by Jennifer Tyrrell, an ousted lesbian den leader from Ohio. "We are at a tipping point, with national leaders within the Boy Scouts now taking a firm stand to help end discrimination," Tyrrell said in a statement issued by Change.
    org.

Tyrrell and others are now calling on Stephenson to join Turley in breaking with the Scouts' gay policy. In his statement Stephenson did not go as far as Turley, although he expressed support for diversity and appeared to agree with Turley's concept of change from within.

"Diversity and inclusion are part of AT&T's culture and operations, and we're proud to be recognized as a leader in this area," Stephenson said.

"We don't agree with every policy of every organization we support, nor would we expect them to agree with us on everything. Our belief is that change at any organization must come from within to be successful and sustainable."

    BSA RESPECTS BOARD OPINIONS

Tyrrell praised Stephenson's record on gay rights at AT&T, but said support for the Boy Scouts gay policy could undermine its otherwise stellar reputation. "His company provides non-discrimination protections, healthcare benefits for same-sex partners, and much more for gay employees," Tyrrell said.

"The last thing AT&T wants is to undermine its excellent reputation for supporting LGBT people by failing to support a resolution that would bring equality to the Boy Scouts of America."

The Boy Scouts of America said in a statement on Wednesday it respects the opinions of its board members.

"While we have supporters and board members with different viewpoints on this issue ... we believe that good people can personally disagree on this topic and still work together to accomplish the mission [of the] Boy Scouts of America," the statement said.

The group, founded 102 years ago, has so far resisted calls to change its policy on homosexuals. "While the BSA does not proactively inquire about sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA," the Boy Scouts said in an earlier statement responding to the petition.

The campaign against the Boy Scouts' gay ban has gathered momentum in the past 18 months led by Tyrrell and Zach Wahls, a 20-year-old Eagle Scout who has two lesbian mothers.

Wahls, an engineering student at the University of Iowa who attained the organization's highest rank of Eagle Scout, became an Internet sensation in January 2011 when his address to the Iowa House of Representatives supporting gay civil unions logged more than 2.5 million views on YouTube.

Wahls also delivered Tyrrell's petition last month to the Boy Scouts of America annual board meeting in Orlando.

The petition urges the Scouts to reinstate Tyrrell, a 32-year-old lesbian mother from Bridgeport, Ohio, who was ousted as a Scout den leader and treasurer in April because of the gay exclusion policy.

The Boy Scouts of America in 2000 won a 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing the organization to ban gays whose conduct, the Boy Scouts argued, violated its values.

The Boy Scouts of America claimed more than 1 million adult volunteers at the end of 2011. It was founded in 1910 as part of the international Scout movement established in Britain by General Robert Baden-Powell.
