Today's Health/Exercise Tip:
Older men's testosterone varies by country, race

Reuters; Aug 26, 2010

New research shows older men's sex hormone levels depend on both race and geographical location, casting further doubt on the criteria for "male menopause."

More than a million testosterone prescriptions are being written in the U.S. every year, experts say, and many go to middle-aged and older men with stunted libido and depressed mood presumably caused by low levels of the male sex hormone.

But there is no consensus about what these symptoms -- sometimes called "male menopause" or "low T" -- mean, or when testosterone levels are too low in the first place. (See Reuters Health story of June 16, 2010: Doubts cast on "male menopause" criteria.)

In the new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers measured sex hormones in more than 5,000 elderly men from five countries across the globe.

They found average testosterone levels varied by 18 percent, landing twice as many white Americans (6 percent) in the low range compared with men from Hong Kong and Japan.

Low testosterone, also called hypogonadism, has been linked to erectile dysfunction and poor libido.

According to Solvay Pharmaceuticals, which makes a prescription ointment for men with low testosterone, the hormone is considered low when it dips below 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood.

However, skeptics say the symptoms of low testosterone may really just be the symptoms of old age, and there is no agreement about how low the hormone has to go before it becomes a problem. (See Reuters Health story of June 8, 2010: Do you have 'Low T?' Or is it just hype?)

"International variation in sex (hormone) levels could have obvious implications for the diagnosis and treatment of hypogonadism," write the researchers on the new study, led by Dr. Eric Orwoll of the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

They say it is unclear why the hormone levels differ across the globe. At least part of the reason has to do with environmental factors such as diet, chemicals or social status, it appears, because Asian men who lived in the U.S. had testosterone levels similar to other Americans, while those who lived in Asia did not.

Testosterone wasn't the only hormone that varied. Black men in the U.S. and Tobago had higher levels of the female sex hormone estradiol, for instance, which has been tied to a lower risk of bone fractures.

"These results may have important health implications," the researchers write.

Logo's 'A-List: New York' trailer: Wait, there are gay men who wouldn't like me?
by Mandi Bierly / Entertainment Weekly / Aug 31, 2010

Logo has released a "supertrailer" for its new reality series, The A-List: New York, from the producers of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. As you can tell from the headline, it's already causing me to do some serious soul-searching. (Gay men that might not like me? Gay men that I might not like? What?!)  The nine-episode series, which premieres Oct. 4, follows "the most envied and sought-after men of New York City as they live the high life hopping from boardroom to benefit to beach house to bedroom." They include: The Amazing Race winner/actor/model/Lance Bass' former boyfriend Reichen Lehmkuhl, his Brazilian model boyfriend Rodiney Santiago, renowned celebrity photographer and RuPaul's Drag Race and America's Next Top Model staple Mike Ruiz, international model (and Marc Jacobs' former flame) Austin Armacost, modeling agent Derek Lloyd Saathoff, and ultra-high-end salon owner Ryan Nickulas. I'm in, if only for this swan.

Remember:  Boycott Target and Best Buy for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations and to Proposition 8 (California) to prevent gay marriage. The Formal Boycott began this past weekend. I stopped shopping these stores - even though I want a new washer/dryer and new clothes for the Fall.  I would not purchase "Blood Diamonds," nor should a person / organization be contributing funds to both Hitler / Nazi's and the Jews at the same time!   Obviously giving money to the Jews and not Hitler/Nazi's is the right thing to do.   Hence, these companies violated my trust and well-being.   They gave money to my enemy who would terminate me from my job, deny me housing and send me to a Internment camp.  Therefore, goodbye Target and Best Buy!  The CEO's of these companies have been insensitive to our reaction and do not even comprehend their actions!  What takes so long to "fire" these Neanderthals?

    Today's Health/Exercise Tip:
Is a Food Diary Right for You?

One of the best weight-loss techniques, according to several weight-loss experts and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), is keeping a food diary – a list of what you eat and drink all day.

By keeping the list, you are more likely to succeed at weight loss and weight maintenance, says the ADA.

    How?

Food journals provide a history of what you've eaten, so any weight loss – or gain – is not a mystery. Food records also keep track of specific menus and food combinations that work – or don't. You can identify problems and begin to problem-solve. (Do you always gain weight when you subtract the fiber-packed cereal? Does eating a high-carb breakfast make you hungrier later in the day or more satisfied?) Without records, you won't even know where to begin.

Record-keeping also helps you monitor your progress and skill level, as well as identify patterns in your weight-management behavior. You might see patterns of weight loss when you walk five days a week versus two, or when you go out to eat only one night instead of two.

To keep a successful journal, write down foods within 15 minutes of eating. Most successful record-keepers total their numbers at the end of the day or the first thing the next morning on a weekly summary sheet. There may be stops and starts at first, but keep at it – the benefits will tally up!

Fidel Castro takes blame for 1960s gay persecution
Former Cuban president says wave of homophobia happened because he was distracted by U.S. threats

Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 / Globe and Mail - Reuters

Fidel Castro took the blame for a wave of homophobia launched by his revolutionary government in the 1960s, but said it happened because he was distracted by other problems, in an interview published on Tuesday in a Mexican newspaper.

The former Cuban president told La Jornada the persecution of gays, who were rounded up at the time as supposed counterrevolutionaries and placed in forced labor camps, was a "great injustice" that arose from the island's history of discrimination against homosexuals.

He said he was not prejudiced against gays, but "if anyone is responsible (for the persecution), it's me."

"I'm not going to place the blame on others," he said.

Mr. Castro, 84, said he was busy in those days fending off threats from the United States, including attempts on his life, and trying to maintain the revolution that put him in power in 1959.

"We had so many and such terrible problems, problems of life or death," Mr. Castro said.

"In those moments I was not able to deal with that matter (of homosexuals). I found myself immersed, principally, in the Crisis of October (Cuban Missile Crisis), in the war, in policy questions," he said.

Official persecution of gays continued into the 1970s before homosexual acts were decriminalized in 1979. Today, Cuba's medical service provides free sex-change operations.

Tuesday's story was the second from La Jornada based on a recent five-hour interview with Castro, who has reappeared in public after four years of seclusion following surgery for an undisclosed intestinal illness.

On Monday, the Mexico-City based newspaper quoted Mr. Castro as saying his illness nearly killed him, but that he has mostly recovered and is trying to stop a nuclear war he believes to be imminent.

Mr. Castro, who resigned the presidency in 2008 but remains head of Cuba's ruling Communist Party, has warned for months that nuclear war will break out if the United States and Israel try to enforce international nuclear sanctions against Iran.

Cuban media reported on Tuesday that he went to the National Aquarium in Havana to watch a dolphin show with U.S.-based writer Jeffrey Goldberg, Julia Sweig of the Council on Foreign Relations think tank in Washington and Adela Dworin, leader of Cuba's Jewish community.

The purpose of the visit was not disclosed, but the reports said Mr. Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine who has written on the Middle East and Iran, had interviewed Castro.

Ms. Sweig is a well-known expert on Cuba and has written several books about the island.

The reports did not say whether Ms. Dworin had discussed with Mr. Castro the case of Alan Gross, a U.S. contractor jailed in Havana since December on suspicion of spying.

The U.S. has said he was in Cuba providing Internet access for Cuba's Jewish community. Cuba says Mr. Gross is under investigation, but no charges have been filed.
