Today's Health - Wellness / Exercise / Reflections:
Diabetes and Sleep Apnea

What does sleep have to do with type 2 diabetes? A whole lot, according to one study. Published in the journal Endocrine Practice, the study found that more than one-third of patients with type 2 diabetes also suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a common sleep disorder that causes a person to repeatedly stop breathing during sleep due to a collapsed airway. It's also linked to a number of long-term health risks that can impact type 2 diabetes, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension and obesity.

The good news is that OSA is easily diagnosed through an overnight stay in a sleep lab, according to James Herdegen, M.D., director for Sleep and Ventilatory Disorders at the University of Illinois in Chicago. The most common treatment, he says, is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, in which a machine sends air through a mask as a person sleeps, which keeps the airway from collapsing. Studies have demonstrated that type 2 diabetics who also suffer from OSA can dramatically reduce their glucose levels by using CPAP treatment.

Gays to Obama: The pressure's on
'The clock is ticking'

By MJ LEE ; 12/02/10;  Politico

Gay rights activists say the Pentagon's review of "don't ask, don't tell" is the final piece of the puzzle President Obama needs to secure its repeal --- and that now, the pressure is on more than ever.

"I think the president reached out in a very measured, thoughtful fashion to the most senior leadership at the Pentagon to get their buy-in. And with the report, that has happened," Aubrey Sarvis, the executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, told POLITICO. "It's absolutely critical that the repeal happen in the next two weeks. If it doesn't, we're going to have to start all over again in the next Congress."

Three gay rights groups - Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force - said they were not surprised by the results of the Pentagon's 10-month study.

"The findings were along the lines of what we already knew and what was leaked in advance - that most service members don't think the repeal would be a big problem," Rick Rosendall, vice president for political affairs at the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, told POLITICO. "It just reinforces what we already knew."

Rosendall warned that if the repeal doesn't happen before the end of the lame-duck session, "demands for action are going to be a lot louder," saying that "many of us who have defended the president so far will have an increasingly difficult time doing so."

He agreed with Rep. Barney Frank's prediction that with Republicans in charge of the House, no pro-gay legislation would be able to pass. "It's been difficult enough in the Senate, and it'll be significantly harder with several more Republicans in the House," he said.

Laurie Young, the director of public policy at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said there was never any question in the gay community on the intentions of Obama.

"He has stated very clearly that he wants the Senate to move as quickly as possible and that he wants this done legislatively - I know that he very much supports it," she told POLITICO. "My hope is that it will be done swiftly through the lame-duck session."

"I have no doubt about the president's commitment to this. ... It is one of his priorities to get this done this year," said Sarvis. "But the reality is, the clock is ticking."
