Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:"ALERT"New Hospital Visitation Regulations Should Protect LGBT FamiliesJan 16, 2011/ Misty Knight-Rini / Suite 101Hospital visitation regulations set to go into effect on Tuesday should prevent same-sex couples from being denied hospital visitation rights. On Tuesday, January 18, 2010, new regulations concerning hospital visitation will go into effect. These regulations could greatly enhance the rights of LGBT individuals to visit their partners in the hospital. The regulations were created after President Obama issued a directive to the Department of Health and Human Services to work to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation back in April 2010 . The directive was prompted, in part, by the actions of self-termed accidental activist, Janice Langbehn. Langbehn spoke at a Miami fundraiser, attended by the President, about the lawsuit she brought forth after being denied the right to visit her partner (despite having proof of healthcare directives) who lay dying in a Florida hospital after collapsing with an aneurysm while the couple and their three children were on vacation.
Working alongside gay rights organizations, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Department of Health and Human Services created regulations that will require all hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs to allow patients to designate visitors and will prohibit hospitals from discriminating in visitation on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese thanked the President, in a statement released Sunday, January 16th, "for recognizing the hardships LGBT people face and taking this important step toward ensuring that no one will be turned away from a partner's hospital bedside again." And while the President did take a step toward greater equality for LGBT individuals, it is important to note that there are a number of health care issues, related to LGBT individuals, not covered by the new regulations. For example, in many states, persons wishing to designate a domestic partner to make health care decisions on their behalf, must have legal documents prepared stating so. Also worth mentioning, is the fact that the regulations will only afford LGBT individuals the intended rights if they are properly enforced, something only time can reveal.
Advocates of same-sex marriage have long argued that legalizing same-sex unions would eliminate much of the administrative headache involved in providing same-sex couples with equal rights.
Opponents of gay marriage argue that the health care regulations are just another example of the LGBT community seeking special privileges not given to others, and that giving into the demands of the LGBT community further undermines the institution of marriage.
Take Action:
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."

By On Top Magazine Staff / Published: January 16, 2011Reince Priebus, the newly elected chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), is opposed to gay marriage.
The former chair of the Republican Party of Wisconsin was elected the group's 65th chairman on Friday, beating out seven other candidates. He will succeed Michael Steele, who also ran for re-election.
Priebus discussed his views on gay marriage with National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Chairwoman Maggie Gallagher.
NOM is the nation's most vociferous opponent of gay marriage. The group backed successful efforts to repeal gay marriage in California and Maine. Its next targets appear to be New Hampshire and Iowa, where Republican lawmakers increased their numbers on November 2.
NOM interviewed the candidates before Friday's election via Skype and their responses were posted at the group's website.
In his interview, Priebus said marriage was given to us by God and needs to be protected from "activist judges."
"I believe marriage is a gift from God and the sanctity of marriage ought to be protected and I don't believe the comedy clause in the constitution allows for activist judges to redefine what marriage is," Priebus said, referring to the constitution's Full Faith and Credit clause.
But there were few distinctions between the candidates, all of whom opposed gay marriage.
