How does one "stay neutral on matters of sexual orientation"?  Kids should be told at the beginning of the school year that all that matters about a person is that he helps make the world a better place.  Everything else (including sexual orientation) does not matter at all.

Gay Mass. Teens More Likely to Be Homeless

One in four lesbian or gay teens and 15 percent of bisexual teens are homeless in Massachusetts compared to just 3 percent of exclusively heterosexual teens, a new study from Children's Hospital Boston has found.
 
The study, published online July 21 on the American Journal of Public Health website, surveyed data provided by more than 6,300 public high school students. It is the first study of its kind to use population-based data to assess the risk of homelessness among teens of different sexual orientations.
 
The study also found that of those homeless youth questioned it was teens that identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual that were consistently more likely to be on their own, without a parent or guardian.
 
"Prior studies in homeless street youth have found that sexual minorities occur in much higher numbers than we'd expect based on their numbers in the community in general," Heather Corliss, PhD, MPH, of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children's, is quoted as saying. "This study looked at the magnitude of the difference for the first time."
 
For the purposes of the study, the data used defined homelessness as lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence, a definition also found in federal legislation such as the McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance Act.
 
Researchers used data from the 2005 and 2007 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) which allows for a representative sample of students in grades 9 through 12.
 
Among the researcher findings were the following:
  • Overall, less than 5 percent of students identified as GLB, yet they made up 19 percent of those identifying as homeless.
  • Homelessness among heterosexual students came in at 3.2 percent. This rate increased to 15 percent among bisexual students, and 25 percent among lesbian/gay students.
  • Homelessness among those unsure of their sexual orientation was also disproportionately high at 20 percent.
  • Fifteen percent of male teens identifying as gay were unaccompanied by parents/guardians, while just 8 percent were homeless but living with a parent.
  • Among girls identifying as lesbian, 22.5 percent were homeless without parental or guardian supervision. Similar trends were found for bisexuals and those unsure of their sexual orientation.
Researchers hope their findings will highlight the vulnerability of GLB and questioning youth where homelessness is concerned, and in particular it is hoped that school administrators and others working with adolescents will take on board these findings. The study also stresses the associated risks with increased prevalence of homelessness such as physical and sexual mistreatment, mental health deterioration, substance abuse and a greater likelihood of high-risk sexual behaviors.
 
"The high risk of homelessness among sexual minority teens is a serious problem requiring immediate attention," says Corliss. "These teens face enormous risks and all types of obstacles to succeeding in school and are in need of a great deal of assistance."
 
The study's chief limitation, as recognized by researchers, is that it only assessed figures from Massachusetts, a state that has been a leader on gay rights and therefore would be more likely to have a more tolerant population. As such, researchers caution that this study will likely underestimate the national problem of homeless sexual minority youth.
 
Also not assessed in the study is the problem of trans youth homelessness. Existing studies have found that trans adults across the nation are at an even greater risk of homelessness than sexual orientation minorities, a trend that has been demonstrated among trans-identifying teenagers as well.

  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! Michele Bachmann Silent On Teen Suicides In Her School District, Opposed Anti-Bullying Bill

A string of suicides among gay and bullied teenagers in Minnesota's largest school district, Anoka-Hennepin Schools, has critics blaming the district's representation, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and anti-gay activists.

Over the last two years, nine teens in district schools have committed suicide, and Bachmann's allies are being accused of standing in the way of "blocking an effective response to the crisis and fostering a climate of intolerance that allowed bullying to flourish," Mother Jones reports. Bachmann signed a pledge this month stating that homosexuality is a choice.

The situation in Anoka-Hennepin Schools is so bad that Minnesota public health officials have deemed the area a "suicide contagion" because of the unusually high number of suicides and attempted suicides, according to the school district's website.

Bachmann has since stayed quiet on the issue. She didn't respond to inquiries from Mother Jones or the New York Daily News.

She historically wasn't a supporter of anti-bullying legislation. In 2004, she took part in a rally that pushed for the ban of gay marriage, according to the New York Daily News. Slate reports that in 2006, she said passing a bill that prevents bullying wasn't worth the time.

"I think for all of us, our experience in public schools is there have always been bullies," Slate reports Bachmann telling the Minnesota state legislature. "Always have been, always will be. I just don't know how we're ever going to get to the point of zero tolerance... What does it mean? ... Will we be expecting boys to be girls?"

Critics are arguing that Bachmann's impassiveness for bullying issues, her opposition to gay rights alongside Anoka-Hennepin Schools' controversial policy on teaching or talking about sexual orientation, creates a threatening environment for at-risk youth in the district.

The Anoka-Hennepin district's sexual orientation curriculum policy states that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues should be discussed outside of the classroom and that employees "shall remain neutral on matters regarding sexual orientation including but not limited to student led discussions." The policy, according to Mother Jones, is known as "no homo promo."

Anoka-Hennepin Superintendent Dennis Carlson told CNN that the district does not plan to revise its policy on sexual orientation curriculum.

The U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Education launched a federal investigation this month, examining the allegations of civil rights laws violations and complaints that there have been cases of discrimination and bullying "based on not conforming to gender stereotypes," according to CNN. It's unclear whether the string of suicides or the district's sexual orientation curriculum policy will be a part of the investigation.

But Dan Reidenberg, executive director of Minnesota-based suicide-prevention organization SAVE told The New York Daily News that the string of suicides cannot be considered an epidemic, as there was no trend and that the instances of suicides and attempts has decreased.

The Congresswoman's husband Marcus Bachmann has also been slammed for his "pray away the gay" clinics, which the couple has publicly denied.
