[Peckers_Pics] Male/Gay Health-Discussion-PICS Re: Salvation Army

Hey  Chip,

Salvation Army  hiring policy upheld by US Supreme Court to win the right to Fire a employee because he is gay.

1.  Salvation Army Rescinds Benefits to Gay Partners.

SAN FRANCISCO --– Less than two weeks after Western officials of the Salvation Army decided to extend health benefits to domestic partners in 13 states, the group's national leaders have rescinded the order.

2. Salvation Army's website: the Salvation Army's policies toward homosexuality: "Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex," the Salvation Army's website reads. While the group "does not consider same-sex orientation blameworthy in itself," it suggests that gay followers "embrace celibacy as a way of life."

3. Hiring Policies: The Salvation Army is a Protestant Christian church known for its extensive philanthropy and charity work. It is an international movement that currently works in over a hundred countries.

4., Abortion: The Salvation Army holds to the Christian ideals of chastity before marriage and fidelity within the marriage relationship and, consistent with these ideals, supports measures to prevent crisis pregnancies. It is opposed to abortion as a means of birth control, family planning, sex selection or for any reason of mere convenience to avoid the responsibility for conception. Therefore, when an unwanted pregnancy occurs, The Salvation Army advises that the situation be accepted and that the pregnancy be carried to term, and offers supportive help and assistance with planning.

5. Homosexuality (wilkopedia):

The Salvation Army in the U.S. has been the topic of some controversial discussions about discrimination against homosexuals in their hiring practices.[38][39] The New York Times reported that the Salvation Army believed it had a firm commitment from the White House to issue a regulation that would override local antidiscrimination laws. A disclosure of The Salvation Army's request "outraged some civil rights groups and lawmakers," and resulted in an immediate reversal of a previous promise to honor the request.

The Salvation Army maintains that they were "not trying to get permission to discriminate against hiring gays and lesbians for the majority of its roughly 55,000 jobs and merely wanted a federal regulation that made clear that the charity did not have to ordain sexually active gay ministers and did not have to provide medical benefits to the same-sex partners of employees."[40]

The Salvation Army's position is that because it is a church, Section VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 explicitly guarantees its right to discriminate on the basis of its religious beliefs in its hiring. To reinforce its position, it threatened to close all soup kitchens in New York City when the city government proposed legislation that would require all organizations doing business with it to provide equal benefits to unmarried domestic partners.[41]

In 2001 the Salvation Army sought a change in distribution regulations for the $24 billion in new federal grants and tax deductions for charitable institutions requested by President George W. Bush.[42] The alteration would have denied funds to state and municipal governments if they imposed restrictions on anti-gay hiring practices such as are practiced within the Salvation Army. Controversy arose after the publication of an internal Salvation Army memorandum suggesting that the discrimination provision would be allowed in exchange for the organization's support of the Bush faith-based public works program.[42] Matt Coles, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Lesbian and Gay Rights Task Force, said the implied deal was "really about... the Salvation Army trying to get a license to discriminate using public money."[42] Ultimately, Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary, who denied the existence of a back-room deal, released a statement saying the administration would not, in the words of ABC News, issue the "regulation sought by the church to protect the right of taxpayer-funded religious organizations to discriminate against homosexuals."[42]

6. Yahoo Question:

Does the Salvation Army discriminate against gay people?

The Salvation Army, which receives nearly $300 million a year in U.S. government money, does not discriminate in delivering its services but advocates against imposing "the category of sexual orientation to the list of anti-discrimination protections" by states and cities as well as against "equal benefits to domestic partnership". The Salvation Army does not hire people who are known to be gay and fires those who are gay when legally allowed to do so.

The Salvation Army states "scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life" on it's website.

Source(s):

7. Legal: Addressing a key aspect of President Bush's faith-based initiative, a federal judge has ruled that the Salvation Army has the right to hire employees according to its faith principles, even when the charity receives government funding.

"The notion that the Constitution would compel a religious organization contracting with the state to secularize its ranks is untenable in light of the Supreme Court's recognition that the government may contract with religious organizations for the provision of social services," U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein said in a Sept. 30 opinion issued in New York City.

The opinion dismisses parts of a case filed against the Salvation Army and New York officials in 2004 by current and former Salvation Army employees who said they were victims of religious discrimination.

George Washington University Law School professor Ira C. Lupu said Stein's ruling helps the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which has argued that acceptance of government funding should not change a religious group's hiring policies.

"This opinion very much reaffirms what people in the White House office have been saying," he said.

Article:

Why The Salvation Army Doesn't Deserve Your Money

by Cultural Correspondent on December 7, 2010

Every holiday season, people open their hearts and wallets for family, friends, and charities alike. Unfortunately, some large organizations who regularly solicit for money are often using funds for political motives or `overhead' costs. In a series of posts, we'll be investigating three popular charities that don't deserve your charity.

**********

Everyone knows the Salvation Army. Whether it's the secondhand goods at their thrift stores or their collection kettles outside department stores, the Salvation Army is ubiquitous to the holiday season.

However, the Salvation Army's virulent opposition to gay rights both in public and through persistent legislative lobbying raises the question how donations intended for the needy are being spent. Many people forget that the Salvation Army is in fact an Evangelical church, and as such, it tends to have a hard-right social agenda.

In fact, the Salvation Army goes so far as to say gay people shouldn't be having sex. You can find
this nugget on their website: "Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life."

Starting at the beginning of George W. Bush's presidency in 2001, the Salvation Army began lobbying for an exemption to equal labor practices for government-funded faith-based organizations. Why? Because the Salvation Army wanted to continue to discriminate against gays and prevent them from being hired.

In 2004, the Salvation Army threatened to close all its soup kitchens in the New York City area—which would have ended $250 million worth of contracts with the city—if they were forced to offer benefits to same-sex couples. This move would have lost the Salvation Army around $70 million in direct funding from the city and endangered the lives of several thousand people reliant on the Salvation Army.

Was this supposed to be a principled stand? All the homeless people receiving care from the Salvation Army would be turned out on the street. What would have motivated The Salvation Army to make such a callous move? They said that, by offering benefits to same sex couples, they'd be supporting HIV/AIDS because HIV/AIDS is only the product of homosexual intercourse.

AIDS? How does AIDS factor in? Oh yeah, I forgot! Gay people don't suffer from non-gay sex related maladies. If a same sex couple needs health benefits, it must be from all that AIDS they're spreading around. Is there any way to construe this as anything but bigotry?

There's still more, too. The Salvation Army has repeatedly rallied against anti-discrimination laws involving hiring of homosexual employees. They've even tried to block a repeal of sodomy laws in New Zealand. And in Canada a few days ago, the Salvation Army turned down donations of Harry Potter and Twilight toys. The occult connotations of these toys, supposedly, is out of line with their Christian teachings. Harry Potter is Satanic? That's a rather old-hat Evangelical argument, isn't it?

Is this the kind of charity you want to be donating to? More importantly, is this a charity that should be receiving government funding? Sure, the Salvation Army does some noble things. Using charity money and government funding to further an anti-gay, Evangelical agenda is not one of them.

The Salvation Army's tremendous size and omnipresence may provide the illusion of moral rectitude. Sadly, that just isn't the case. There are plenty of wonderful charities out there without hidden political agendas worth donating to instead of the Salvation Army. Check out websites such as Charity Navigator to look for charitable organizations that will spend your money on the causes they support, not political muckery.

> You're at the gym with your brand new workout gear on and you're ready to roll. What do you do first? There are so many exercise equipment options at the gym that you might not know which one to start with, especially if you're combining a cardio and weight-lifting routine. Do you hit the treadmill first and then pump iron, or is it the other way around?
> According to a study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, the order in which you do your cardio and weight-lifting routines at the gym does make a difference. To burn more calories, get your cardio out of the way first and then lift weights. By getting the more physically challenging portion of your workout done first, you're allowing your body to get the most out of the time you spend in the gym. If you're pretty beat after you finish your cardio, take a little break and grab some water to get your heart rate down. Then head over to the weight room and get back to work.
> Make sure you gauge just how spent your muscles are after you've finished your cardio and don't lift anything heavier than what your muscles can handle at this stage in your workout. Start your weight-lifting routine by focusing on the big muscle groups (like quadriceps and hamstrings) that require lifting heavier weights and end with smaller muscle groups (like calves, biceps, triceps and abdominals) that require lifting a smaller amount of weight. Not only will you get the most work out of your muscles, you won't end up dropping a heavy weight on yourself by the end of your workout when you're really fatigued.Take Action: Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Further, Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking! Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits. Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce. Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community. Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better. "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:

> (AP) OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington state officials on Monday released copies of signature petitions that forced a vote on a 2009 domestic partnership law, disclosing the names of signers after a judge rejected arguments that supporters could be harassed.
> The Washington State Archives provided a DVD to The Associated Press showing the 138,000 signatures for Referendum 71. The release came despite an attorney's vow to appeal the ruling and seek temporary protection from the disclosure of names.
> Gary Randall, a spokesman for the group Protect Marriage Washington, said he thought it was terrible that the state released the names.
> "I believe there will certainly be harassment, and I pray to God there isn't more than that," he said.
> Referendum 71 asked voters to approve or reject a domestic partnership law approved by lawmakers and signed by the state's Democratic governor. The law granted registered domestic partners additional state rights previously given only to married couples.
> It was scheduled to go into effect in July 2009, but the referendum campaign sponsored by conservative Christian groups put it on hold. Voters that November approved it with 53 percent of the vote — the first time any state's voters have approved a gay equality measure at the ballot box.
> Conservative Christian groups wanted to keep the signed petitions out of public view because they feared harassment from gay-rights supporters, some of whom have vowed to post the names of petition signers on the Internet.
> But U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle said in his ruling Monday morning that petitioners who advocated for privacy provided only a few experiences of indecent statements and other uncomfortable conversations. Also, there was only speculation that those incidents were connected to the issue, he said.
> If just a few instances of harassment were used as the standard for preventing the release of names, then disclosure would become the exception, rather than the rule, Settle said.
> Attorneys for the state and open government advocates had argued that disclosure was necessary to ensure there wasn't fraud.
> "Had the Court agreed that these ballot measure petitions could be kept secret because the referendum's sponsors were bothered by some who voiced opposition to their point of view, it would have set a terrible precedent for future elections." said Anne Levinson, chairwoman of the Washington Families Standing Together, which led the campaign to protect the domestic partnership law.
> James Bopp, Jr., an attorney pushing to keep the names private, had said he wanted the names kept private while his group appeals the decision.
> "I think the court adopted an impossible standard for anyone to ever meet to protect themselves from an organized campaign of harassment," Bopp said.
> The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that release of the signatures does not violate constitutional rights, but the justices allowed advocates to prove that the release would put signers in danger. One of the signature gatherers testified that he received an angry text message from his brother and received obscene or profane gestures from passing cars.
